TH@6:30. Early start due to heat. Short outing to peak. Friend in town on limited time. I needed to give my foot another test. Guess this is how most do it. Very temporary for me. Will look to push a bit harder next week

9:15 start after dropping my GS off at school. Traveling CW I planned to hit 3 peaks along the way.
Breezy to begin with turning to 40mph winds to finish. I hit unnamed peak 2080 first and continued to Dixie. I saw a smattering of hikers and one biker (That I saw 3 times).

Next up was Union. I almost cut the hike short because of darkening skies to the west. After consulting the radar, it looked like it was going to stay west.

Down from Union (which is my favorite of the 3) I made my was back to the lot. I got sprinkled on a bit hiking and a light rain as I was driving away.

Joined Kelly for one of her 10 mile "rehab" hikes. Lots of early morning hot air balloons up in the cool air. Quite a few MTBers on the trails. Nice to do something a little different. Thanks Kelly! :)

Part of a daily double. Started off with the Sonoran SP. Now that I’m not working on this side of town, I don’t get a chance to visit my old haunts. I want to visit these trail systems just to stay current. Unfortunately, I’m a month too late for this system.

I was saddened to see that the saguaro that held the owl’s nest went down. I talked with some of the regulars and they said the saguaro came down sometime in March. (It seems Tibber was the last HAZ member to see it standing). The “regulars” said that one owlet died and two were taken to a sanctuary. Sadly, one of the main attractions for this system has fallen due to the worsening conditions for the saguaro. I believe that nest had been there for almost the duration of the trail system…a good 6-7 years. :(

Got to the TH around 6am. Did a lasso. Went in on the Hawk Nest (past the fallen nest that now lies (practically) on the trail) and then did a loop going CCW and on the way hit Dixie Summit. Trails were in good shape. They were actually a bit damp so the north side must have got some rain last night. Trails were busy. Probably encountered over 40 users. Ended up, hiking back with a “transplant” from Wisconsin. Tried to talk up HAZ, we’ll see if she bites. :)

My elevation hike of the week. Bonus, getting to do it in the afternoon and the temp was just about right; especially when the sun hid a bit behind the clouds.

Oh the way up Hawk's Nest Trail, I stopped to say hello to the female owl, no babies that I could see. There was also the usual suspects of wildflowers scattered on each side of the trail. Once to the saddle I headed east (counterclockwise) on the Dixie Mountain Loop, as I went the other way the last time I was up here. The trail is wide and eventually goes up to give you a nice view to the valley and beyond.

I continued my way contouring the mountainside as I made my way closer to Dixie Peak. I gave thot to not doing it, but it came up faster than I expected so my feet said, "yes" and up I went. It's not a bad climb except for the last bit when you think you should have topped out and you have a little further to go. There were people on the summit so I didn't stay but a minute to get a picture. On the way up I noticed a lot of panels of some sort over by the TSMC plant; I zoomed to get a closer look.

And now down to continue my way. Here is where I usually run into a few lizards and today was no exception. One little guy was trying to race me, so cute. When I turned the corner and headed north there was more lupine along the trail and that would be the case for much of the hike. Heading west from the saddle I spotted a lot of poppies. They were scattered with only a few groupings so it made it hard to photograph. I noticed a lot more London Rocket, an additional invasive species with the Stinknet. And, of course, if you think wildflowers like rain, these species are even hardier :( .

Heading south I would encounter a lot more lupine and poppies so I enjoyed that as I made my way up to Cholla Saddle. The light was slightly filtered so I got some decent pictures. My legs were tired a little ways back but they were snapping out of their funk. That's been happening a couple times. This getting older really sucks. And now to tackle the last long hill. I seemed to do fine so that put a smile on my face. I encountered a few hikers at the saddle with Hawk's Nest, checked in on the owl and completed the hike. I could have added on but there was a beer waiting and it won out, the first "Huck It" of the season.

WATCH 5.11 miles, 2:32-4:43 burning 870 calories. Elevation 1644-2332. 131 avg bpm/161 max with 10% in Zone 4 Anaerobic (149-167 bpm), 39% Zone 3 Aerobic (131-148 bpm) and 49% Zone 2 Weight Control (112-130 bpm). TEMP was a lovely 69.8, filtered sun from time to time and 29% humidity.

Not quite the same as last year around this time as it was the superbloom when I was treated to a stunning show: [ triplog ] (has the videos too).

Another hike on the north end of the valley, similar to one we did last year.
Pretty sunrise as we got going. Nice and green out there with wildflowers making a showing in what should be a strong season.
Not as many people out as we expected. Nice day. Thanks Kelly! :)

Carey called the Harem (Dan, Carey, Yolanda, and Pammy) together today to hit the trails out of Desert Vista trailhead. Started up Hawk's Next trail right at 8am. There was a guy who had a big lens camera setup on a tripod monitoring the owls nest. You could see some movement going on from on of the adults, but couldn't see any owlings in the nest. We hiked the loop counter-clockwise with a side trip up Dixie Summit trail. Plenty of hikers and a few mountain bikers out on the trails. Couldn't be a better morning.

Phoenix 7 Summit Challenge: Begin at 0500 (the toughest part of the challenge), and complete 7 hikes for a total of 25 miles and AEG of 5600 feet within 12 hours.

1) Apache Wash Trailhead - Sidewinder - Ridgeback - Ocotillo Loop (5.04 miles): Began at 0520. Went counterclockwise. Completely dark except for the headlamps. Mostly flat, with a few ups and downs, with a hill near the end. Nice warmup. Decided to run down the hill, tripped on a rock, fell hard, and got a cholla stuck in my right glute. I couldn't see the cholla, so it remained there until the end of the loop when a staffer kindly removed it.

2) Deem Hills Ridgeline (3.2 miles): Nice, simple out-and back with a slightly steeper climb. Overall enjoyable. Views were decent, especially on the back end. A lot of views of the surrounding neighborhoods.

3) Dixie Summit Trail (3.17 miles): This was fun. Another out-and-back. Some nice views of other peaks along the way. A number of switchbacks to reach the summit.

4) Lookout Mountain Summit (2.83 miles): Mediocre for the first mile, then more interesting after that as the slope increased. Some fun, easy scrambling to reach the peak.

5) Shaw Butte Trail (3.9 miles): This one sucked. First mile flat and boring, then a steady, unrelenting ascent (20-30°) on a wide dirt road, with a few flat stretches and a couple turns. Views are poor the entire way. Very tedious, felt like it took forever to trudge up this one. The views at the top are the worst because the radio towers clutter up the summit.

6) Piestewa Peak (2.37 miles): I've done Piestewa a few times. It hits different when you've already done 18 miles prior to tackling this one. Took a number of rests, thought about giving up, then finished it.

7) Holbert Trail (4.76 miles): Felt better after surviving Piestewa and slamming a Red Bull. Nice trail. Fun. Good views along the way and at the top. There is a parking lot at the top, and the lookout area is crowded with people who drove up there, which diminishes the experience. Everyone on this trail was exuberant that this was the last hike of the Challenge, so good vibes all around.

Averaged 17-20 minutes/mile for the first 3 summits, 21-23 mins/mile for the next 2, 48 mins/mile for Piestewa (including all the resting and sobbing), and 29 mins/mile on Holbert.

There was also a total of over 2 hours of driving between trailheads.

Excited for next year!

It's getting cool enough for me to drop my GS off at school and the get in a little hike in before it gets too hot.

I hit up the Sonoran Preserve on the way home. A mix of hiker, trail runners and MTB'ers. One of which came dangerously close to colliding with me. I got out of his way just in time to be missed by inches.

Done before it hit 90. The TH features flush toilets and filtered water.

Needed to do my 🦉 and baby 🐣 check up. It's still nice enough I can hang out at the house and have my coffee and do some work before heading out; so I'm taking advantage of the later start. I headed up the Hawk's Nest Trail thinking about my 6-nite backpack at Glacier in early July, hoping that I will be in good enough shape to do that. I got up to the owl nest and she was sitting up pretty tall but no evidence of a little one so I continued up. Off to the right I noticed a pretty cholla that had a Hedgehog blooming brightly right below it, made for a nice photo.

I hung a right at the Dixie Loop Trail. A lot of the cactus had buds, blooms and blossoms but I guess I expected them to be more bloomy. Although most Brittlebush were spent, there were still some blooming and it made for a few nice photos along with the cholla. The ocotillos had some fabulous blossoms and I liked that I could get close up with them. I shot more than my fair share of these plants and tried to include nice backdrops of the area and trail. And now it was to make my way toward Dixie Peak, being as Kelly has me on a roll in that regard  .

I still am fighting a nasal cold that wants to drop down into my chest so that was a bit frustrating as I was trying to breathe getting up the peak. This peak has those little false summits that get me every time because just when you think you're done, there's one more. I did actually sit down for a moment or two and shot a couple photos of the TSMC plant. It's been interesting to watch the progress.

Down I went and I realized my toes were rubbing against the front of my shoe... so I may have to change to a thicker sock to see if that helps. My big toe nails are almost done recovering from several months ago from wearing too short of shoe. It's downhill from here to the northeast saddle. But just as I was enjoying the breeze and view, 🐍 buzzed me. It was off to the right and I'm glad I didn't over react like I want to do; and yes, I snapped a picture but was only able to get part of it. Needless to say, I started paying more attention to the trail in front of me. The worst thing is I would be coming back this way but hopefully it will have continued down the hill.

I hiked the east side where the Brittlebush is still blooming along part of the trail and there was also lupine. The lizards are also out enforce and they kept me company for most of the hike. I would see about ten hikers today, most of them couldn't get a "hello" out of their mouths :( . At the saddle, Alexa reminded mt to enroll for tomorrow's "Get Strong" class and headed back the way I came. Fortunately it was uneventful other than the few hikers I would see.

I headed down the Valle Vista Trail and enjoyed going thru this valley. The Teddy Cholla are starting to bud and bloom and there was other budding and blooming cactus. I ended up taking more pictures than I anticipated. I was glad that the breeze stayed with me as sometimes when I hike down here, the breeze seems to disappear. Because of that cooling breeze, I decided to stick with my original plan and continued to the Cactus Wren Trail. Here I was delightfully surprised to still see some Owl Clover and Lupine blooming so I got distracted by that. I finished this part of the hike to the GO junction and turned back.

The trail is very nice and leisurely as I retraced my steps and then it was on to the Desert Tortoise Trail. I did encounter a couple hikers here including a gentleman with a big camera. There is still blooming desert flora to shoot so hopefully he found some good subject matter; I know I found some great budding/blooming Buckhorn. And now it was just a matter of finishing off this hike but not before I got to see a bird catch something in its mouth, fly to a creosote and then lose it; still cool to see.
I headed back up the Hawk's Nest Trail to check on the owl. I did manage a couple pictures of her and a white feather ball baby. So it looks like both of my owls only had one baby.

Wanted to get a nice hike in before weather hits. This time I also wanted to get the peak I missed when Kelly and I were out here on the 16th. As I headed up the Hawks Nest my hamstrings were whining a tad from the dead lifts I did yesterday morning in class. It's one of my favorite exercises but she had us do a lot of them : rambo : . I never quite understand that between all the hiking and gym classes I do, why do my muscles not adapt and feel like I've done neither each time I hike or exerercise. They say muscles remember but mine have a very short term memory :( .

Anyway, it was pretty busy until I made the turn on Desert Tortoise that winds you in and around the side of the mountain until you come to the other side. I stopped to observe additional cholla babies on both sides of the trail. Some of the parents are pretty chunky too. Then it's a quick jaunt to the Valle Vista where you head west to the Dixie Mountain Loop. It's a nice warm up prior to the little bit of climbing you do just before joining the loop where there are additional little ups and downs to the turn off for Dixie Mountain. I actually like the climb up Dixie Mountain but I don't like that little false summit; altho the trail to the summit after that is actually pretty nice.

A couple folks at the top even said hello as I looked around. It was a clear day except toward the south. I also noticed some sort of road that looks like a runway over to the northeast. I zoomed a little but not enough to decipher it. It is to the north of the GO trail so if I feel ambitious I could add that on to a Union Peak hike.

On my way back down I unintentionally did a partial split skid and fortunately stayed afloat without straining anything, whew! And from here it's a cruise. Once again I noticed the very healthy teddy chollas on the northeastern saddle and there would be more of this in other cholla subdvisions. The light was such that they really were photogenic so I ended up taking more pictures than I wanted. I would encounter three hikers on this east and north side. Once I headed south, I would see a few more bike riders and hikers. As I came around part of the hill, the building at TSMC really stands out now.

I gave thought to Western Vista but decided to do that another time. I wasn't sure if I wanted to do the Vista and come up that hill on the southwest side. In retrospect, that hill wasn't as long or as steep as I remembered. So I might try a horseshoe of Western and Dixie to see how I do on that. I once again got distracted by hillsides full of cholla and about 6 ravens flying high above.

Half way up the hill on the west side, the light started to change so I got stuck taking photos of the yellow and pink hues with a couple rays of white light breaking through the cloud cover... just wish all the houses weren't in the way. And then, I spotted the hot air balloons in the distance so I gave the zoom a bit of a workout.... And then, I saw a bunny ahead. Gosh, was I ever going to get up this hill  ; maybe that's why it seemed so easy, although I was about at the top when I saw all this action going on.

At the corner of Hawks Nest, I saw the couple from the north side and we commented on meeting up with each other. They said I must have been going fast, ha! Any color in the sky was over as I headed down Hawks Nest Trail and the people traffic picked up. I changed my shoes and rewarded myself with a Huck It.

WATCH: 2:03-4:22PM, 6.33 miles, 1645-2399 elevation. 134 avg bpm/165 max bpm with 40% Zone 5 max, 36% Zone 4 anaerobic, 23% Zone 3 aerobic burning 954 calories. Temp 69.8 fair (seemed just about right for shorts and sleeveless shirt) and 25% humidity. I thot it was a tad breezy too.

Narrow-leafed Popcorn flowers on the west side. Creosote were blooming and fuzz balls too. Chunky teddy cholla and lots of babies on the ground.

Mid day start waiting for it to warm up. Only a smattering of cars in the lot. I did a CW loop hitting the 2 of the 3 peaks before heading over to Union Peak for my 3rd peak. It'd been 7 years since I'd been up this one and I'd forgotten how enjoyable this climb is. Best views in the area

Clockwise. Got 'er done. Hike seemed to go fine and I didn't feel totally spent either so I think I'm making progress. It was a nice afternoon for the whole hike. A lot more people out on the trail than I thot I would see but it was a Sunday; only two lizards. Western Vista is the longer of the two peaks with the first half being the steepest. And then the rollercoaster of little hills as you make your way north and then east.

The level area as you head south was all in the shade and then you have a couple more rollercoaster hills before starting the switchbacky slightly steep ascent of Dixie Summit. However, the mileage is shorter than Western Vista. The top part always gets me with the false summit before it steeply goes up that last little bit. There was a mother, daughter atop having a nice time together.

Once I got back down the hill it turned into a hike for beer. I continued to encounter other hikers. I also noticed here the ocotillo still had their leaves vs the north Preserve. I also noticed the Teddy Cholla arms seemed pretty chunky so they must be enjoying the fall weather I guess.

WATCH: Interestingly, mileage matched up with RS the first 3 miles which doesn't happen very often. 1:57-4:17PM, 5.76 miles, 1652-2367 feet. 139 avg bpm (149 last March)/max 190 (188 last March). 54% Zone 5 Max, 28% Zone 4 anaerobic, 18% Zone 3 aerobic burning 1003 calories (929 last March). Starting Temp 71.5 and sunny with 16% humidity.

I'm typing this 3-26-2022, the hike was last Tuesday. I had planned Union Peak but decided it was a little warmer than I liked and I hadn't practiced enough elevation for that... at least that's what I told myself. In fact, I told myself I would stick with just the loop today but...

I headed up Hawk's Nest Trail hoping to see Mama Owl. She was there but sleeping so no pictures as all I could see was feathers. So up the hill I continued to the junction with Dixie Mountain Loop. I opted to go counterclockwise as I think I went clockwise the last time. It's always a little longer to the junction with Valle Vista than I remember. I encountered a few hikers here and there for most of the hike.

Now that I was warmed up, I decided I needed to do at least one of these peaks so I opted for Dixie Peak and up I went. It's actually a pretty easy climb but that false summit gets me every time  . I didn't stay long and headed back down where another couple was coming up. The older gentleman was carrying all the water; they were from CO as I saw them park next to me as I was leaving.

Next it was around a corner and then another before heading down (west). There were some small wildflowers here but really not enough to shoot photos. I was especially disappointed as I got in the lower depression on the western side where there is normally a nice display of wildflowers to find NADA! It was also near here that I reached my decision to go back to experiencing my hikes and if I do it at a good rate of speed or for exercise, good for me. Whew. Now we'll see how I do enacting the decision.

I headed up to Cholla Saddle and resisted the urge to take a photo :o . You that have hiked here know how hard that is to walk by with no photo. I headed up the west side and managed well so decided to extend my hike and continued east. And as always there's that extra corner before I headed down the Valle Vista Trail. As I neared the bottom I got a call from my Financial Advisor and former boss. I think that's the second time he's caught me out hiking.

I finished this trail quickly because of the conversation, an advantage one gets when hiking with someone else. I headed south and west on the Desert Tortoise Trail and as I got over the crest of the hill I saw a bunch of hikers in front of me. I would soon catch them and have to Beep Beep my way through 25 people. It was getting warm by this time judging by the next three male hikers I saw as I got closer to the TH; they were shirtless. Sometimes half-naked on the trail is a good thing, sometimes not. This was a good one out of three; not that I'm judgmental about such things :D .

I enjoyed my Huckleberry Lager Beer; I have one left of that brand. It was a good hike and I feel like I get my money's worth, so to speak. Heading to Kona and Waikiki in early April so if you would like to offer up any hiking ideas for me, feel free.

WATCH: 7.21 miles (high point 2302/ low point 1620) avg bpm 137/max 162 (13% at level 4 anaerobic, 54% at level 3 aerobic, 33% at level 2 weight control) burning 1100 calories. Starting temp 66.1 and sunny with 14% humidity finishing at 11:54AM
