john and i have had golden dome on our must do list for a few years
we decided to get up there today
got going around 0700
followed @dixieflyer's route for most of the hike
immediately scenic from milepost 204
followed a few trails that we've been on before for about 3.5 miles
off trail to our first landmark, pedestal arch, which i've seen at least three times
then the ridgeline up to golden dome saddle
we took one of the west side chutes for climb to the summit
one corner had some exposure
nice to be up top after seeing it on every goldfields hike
we took a snack/photo break and signed the register
i was a little sketched out before the descent, but it was fine
thank you for spotting me, john
we then followed the ridgeline over peak 3141
the downhill from there was slow going - steep with loose rock
the worst part of the entire hike was the drainage we followed to get over to triple arch and black glass canyon
lots of catclaw and other sticker bushes
saw the arch and dropped down the canyon
one bypass and fun downclimbing
water flowing and some deep pools
once out of the canyon, we took the road back partway, then some other trails before closing the loop
four classic goldfield landmarks on this hike
water in some of the drainages
great views from the high points
a lot of bang for the buck
it's not easy with all the off trail
we had a good day for it
copied linkage since i still have no idea what trails we were on
thanks lp! this was a good one :)

Kelly and I have been wanting to hike Golden Dome for a few years now. Today was the day.
Got started before sunrise. Warmer than expected. 54 degrees at the trailhead. Much cooler in places.
The scenery here in the Goldfields is always fantastic, start to finish.
Before long we reached Pedestal Arch. Cool spot. A lot of work from there to Golden Dome. The ascent wasn't bad, only one spot that was a little exposed. Views from the top are excellent.
Descending was tedious down loose steep terrain. Going through the canyons and pools of running water was special.
Long day by the time we finished up. Great hike. Thanks Kelly. :)

1st trip
We returned to the Goldfields again this weekend, hoping to take advantage of what will likely be one of the few remaining weekends this spring with highs in the 80s. Our main destinations today were Overlook Arch and the neighboring "Kissing Turtles" Arch, with a few other landmarks along the way. We started from Willow Canyon Trailhead, which looked like a junkyard...someone left an abandoned, hollowed-out boat and a dilapidated RV in the parking lot, and the windows were shattered/shot out. I've seen a lot of trash in the Goldfields, but those are the biggest pieces yet...

A few miles into the hike, I went up to check out a cave up in a rock formation that looked fairly deep from down below, but closer inspection revealed it was just a shallow alcove. Soon after that, we came across another feature I'd hoped to see today--a rock tunnel with large quantity of grinding holes of various sizes. That was really nice spot...there there three or four deep, well-formed grinding holes and a bunch of smaller, shallower holes. That was the first sign of native activity I'd ever seen in the Goldfields.

As we got closer to the arches, we passed through a lot of dark, volcanic rock and some interesting formations leading into a dry creek bed that we followed before heading up the slope toward the arches. I'd read some comments about the effort-to-reward ratio being a little questionable for these two arches, but the bushwhack getting up the slope wasn't too bad, at least the route we took--the ground wasn't particularly loose, and the brush was mostly free of thorns and spaced out enough that it was easy to avoid.

However, despite having the coordinates marked on the GPS, it took a little longer than expected to find the arches. Overlook is fairly wide but very short, and we didn't see it from below...you might say it's easy to overlook? We ended up climbing up higher on the hillside than necessary, then dropped down over and around to the east side of a ridge and found Kissing Turtles Arch first, then spotted Overlook nearby. Of the two, Kissing Turtles is the more photogenic, with a larger opening than the flatter, wider Overlook Arch, but both offered some nice views of the Superstitions and Weaver's Needle to the east.

We ended up crawling through Overlook Arch to head down the west side where we'd initially come up. On the hike out, we spotted a few more caves off the trail. The first was relatively shallow, but there was a series of three our four concentrated in one area that were deeper, one of which extended 10-15 feet into the rock. Nearby, I found a few fairly large pieces of pottery, which was a nice surprise...I'd never seen any pot sherds in the Goldfields before today, and that was the second sign of native habitation on today's route :).

The majority of the hike was the typical Goldfield mix of informal trails, roads, and washes, and the bushwhacking section of the hike was relatively short and straightforward. We didn't see anyone until we were back within a mile of Willow Canyon TH and saw two hikers, and theirs was the only other vehicle in the lot besides the abandoned boat and RV. It turned out to be another fun day in the Goldfields...we found everything we'd set out to see, and the grinding holes, caves, and pottery were a nice bonus. It's too bad these temperatures can't stick around for a few more months...

I'd had dixieflyer's GPS track in my "to do" folder for some time and Nov 22 was the day for it. I was on the trail before sunrise at 6:15 am and ended up taking twelve hours and returning to the trailhead at 6 pm in the dark. I like to take my time and look around and I move fairly deliberately when rock/boulder hopping. I chose to do the hike counterclockwise which probably was not a good decision. I think going clockwise is probably a bit easier in the long run. Due to the large amounts of water in Black Glass Canyon up from the Jeep wash, the going was slow as I had to go around areas one could normally hike in. The arches were spectacular, the summits had outstanding views, and route was difficult with some fun bushwhacking. It was nice to be on a trail when it got dark. Exactly 0.0 people and 0.0 ORVs were encountered on this hike. I will upload the gpx file soon, but it's pretty much identical to dixieflyer's. With the heavy rains earlier in the week, there was lots of water everywhere.

1st trip
Tracie, my intrepid hiking partner, had been wanting to go hike Black Glass Canyon, so we decided to go hike in the canyon and also check out a couple of peaks and a couple of arches.

I had seen a triplog and a GPS track that Chumley posted last month in which he climbed up Golden Dome and Peak 3141, so we decided to bag those as well. Along the way we also went to Pedestal Arch and viewed Triple Arch while in Black Glass Canyon.

We started and ended the hike at the Willow Canyon TH, which is at mile marker 204 on Highway 88. It was my first time to this TH.

The hike started out easy enough, but after 3 miles or so it became a total off-trail cross country bushwhack/scramble.

Our first stop was at Pedestal Arch, which was neat to see. We eventually made our way to Golden Dome, and climbed up it via the short chute that Chumley went up on the NW side of the Dome -- he picked a good route up. The views atop the Dome were really nice -- much better than being on Dome Mountain, the high point in the Goldfields. We descended the summit the same way that we came up, and then went over to Peak 3141. The climb up was easy, but the descent down the east side was steep and very slow going...but we eventually made our way down, and went over to Black Glass Canyon. I enjoyed the canyon, although there were a few tricky descents. While in the canyon we were able to see Triple Arch, although we didn't feel like climbing up to the arch. Once we got out of Black Glass Canyon, we started back in Rough-N-Rowdy Canyon and took a look at a few caves that were there.

After climbing these 2 peaks, I have now climbed atop 11 of the 17 highest peaks in the Goldfields. Maybe I will get the other 6 someday.

Before going up to Golden Dome, I briefly thought about checking out Tuff Dome. It might be a doable climb, but it looked pretty steep from a distance.

We didn't see any wildlife on the hike, but didn't see any other humans either. I guess that 1 out of 2 ain't bad!

The target today was to climb to an arch location we spotted on a previous trip in the Goldfield Mountains. The hike out was nice although a little windy. The climb to the arch was easier than expected. In hindsight we should have taken the same route down but instead descended down the back of the arch which lead us to some very loose gravel and into a very bad thicket area. Since we were done with the business part of the hike we chose to take the longer, scenic route back to the trailhead.

Could this arch be the infamous Overlook Arch Ted Tenny writes about in his Goldfield Mountain Hikes book? Maybe :D

Started out to do a little Re-Con for a up coming hike that we've been eying for a couple of years. Which was the Trans Goldfield. Official Description very vague, and AZLOT69's triplog was only thing to go by. Got up to the top of Rhyodacite Canyon, stopped for a snack. I will say someone has trimmed and cairned this route, was so much nicer then 3 years ago. Thank you very much :) This is a beautiful Canyon and if you haven't been there, I would highly recommend this as go to hike. Lot of water running today :D :D Roger says we're this far, why don't we just head over to Route 88 :scared: :scared: :o :o All we had to do was get to the top of Goldfield Figure 8, and cruise down to the TH. ( Rog's famous last words ) we thought the top of the 8 was maybe 2 miles at the most. Called Iris -- Cel phone service :o :y: Changed our plans. Asked her to meet us at the Willow Springs TH at 5 to 5:30 at the latest. The route we wanted turned out not to be 2 miles but 4 miles of -- To quote AZLOT69 triplog --- "This will test your endurance and route finding skills" ---- : rambo : style. Amen !!! No Cel service, we had no actual route to follow, Now no way to contact anyone  new ETA 7 PM and Iris is waiting   :scared: Glad she is  very understanding. We had to go up thru a couple of saddles to check out the route from a higher view point, last saddle we went up got cliffed out , but looked below and found a ramp that took us back down to the wash. Be prepared for heavy brush and catclaw during your many crossings of the wash. This center 4 miles or so is the path of least resistance !!! You are in the sun most of the day, so plenty of water, rest and anything over 85 degrees I would think twice before attempting. Over all this was a great hike with views of the inner Goldfields seldom seen.

Great bushwhack hike, saw no one else, typical Goldfield style. Rugged area, found a tick on me when I got home, guess I was moving too slow.
As you leave Rhyodacite Canyon to the east, you enter the Crown Butte Arroyo hike.

Not for everybody, this is traveling thru a rock strewn wash on a bushwhack in an area that is not groomed. The reward, seeing no one else, seeing some wildlife, awesome geology.
