Chasing autumn colors on Graham.
Drove up to Ladybug Saddle and back.
Hiked up a couple side canyons along the way.
Colors look good, but are a tad past peak now.

Clockwise loop starting at Grant Hill :next: down the Swift Trail :next: onto Cunningham lower trail :next: around and back down to Grant Hill.
Always a scenic loop and with perfect 9000ft weather.
Highlight was spotting what I thought was an injured turkey just off trail, hiked down to it within 5 feet only for it to jump up and reveal 8 eggs. Cool ... first time I've ever seen a turkey nest!
We also spotted many other turkeys, several white-tails and one of them endangered Red Squirrels.
Trail had some challenges, but overall was in good shape for a burn area.
Good trail, fun partner, great time!

Scenic drive from Safford up to Riggs Lake.
Many stops along the way including the Fort Grant overlook and Post Creek Falls.
First up at Riggs was our short hike on the Lakeshore Trail around the lake and out to the backside overlook.
Next up was a couple hours of R&R fishing.
We quickly caught our limit of 4 rainbows.
We never saw the resident Bald Eagles, but heard them a couple of times.
Campers told us that every evening 3 black bears have been visiting the lake.
Always hate leaving this beautiful little lake, but this was a day trip and next up was the Soldier Creek Ice Caves lower down the mountain.
At Solider we made the short hike down to the caves and had fun poking around the several entrances for about an hour.
One more stop at Columbine ended our time on top before returning back down to town.
Ended our day with pizza and ice cream at Joe's Ride-N-Dine.

We had a 6 year old with us on this trip so not a lot of hiking, but that was ok ... had a wonderful time just taking it easy and enjoying the mountain scenery.

Probably my last snowshoe of the season on Graham?
We first hiked in on the closed dirt road portion of the Swifty down to the upper Hospital Flat meadow.
From there we snowshoed across the meadow to Hospital Flat and over the hill down to Treasure Park.
At Treasure Park we kicked it for an hour with a fire, burritos & chocolate bananas!
Then it was back up to where we parked completing a loop.
All the meadows are still covered with snow, the creeks are now becoming exposed with good snow melt flow & everything looked wonderful!
Am so happy we got this one done ... it will all be gone soon :(
And now we chase poppies!

Wanted to get another snow day in on top before it all starts to vanish.
Parked at the end of the black top and hiked in on the closed dirt road.
Walked the sludgy Swift Trail down to Hospital Flat where snowshoes then became mandatory.
First went across the big meadow :next: down to Hospital Flat :next: over to Treasure Park, had a warm up fire and lunch here :next: back up to the Swift Trail and back to where I parked.
All the roads down to the campgrounds and meadows are still fully covered in snow and looked beautiful!
All the creeks were flowing good with snow melt.
Ended the day at Ladybug Peak for sunset.

Just 4 miles, but snowshoeing it ... well that wore me out
Awesome Day on Graham!

Lazy Sunday drive up to Ladybug Saddle to view fall colors.
I would call the colors just about peak right now from Turkey Flat up to Ladybug Saddle.
Many others like me were up enjoying the colors with stops along the road for pics.
Also made a stop by the cabin area for a hike down into a very colorful canyon before calling it a trip.

Just another day up high to stroll through the forest.
Parked at Cunningham Campground.
Cunningham Loop - Hiked the upper portion on the recently cleared trail. Turned around where the cleared trail turned into the uncleared messy trail.
Swift Trail - Used the road to get down to Moonshine.
Moonshine Creek - Out to the overlooks then back to where the Grant Creek Trail starts.
Grant Creek Trail - Out and back to the big overlook.
Wildlife - 1 overrated Mt Graham Red Squirrel, 1 Abert's squirrel, 5 white tails, a couple hawks, 1 turkey vulture and 1 ground turkey at the end.
Nice clear blue sky day with a breeze ... and a very low and loud military jet hello.
Always a good time on Graham with my buddy!

Figure 8 - Cunningham Spur :next: Hawkins Trail #74 :next: Hospital Flat :next: Swift Trail :next: Grant Hill.
Plan was to get the newer Hawkins Trail connector completed, but a risky washed out gorge turned us around just before completing ... live to hike another day was the new plan.
Cunningham Spur - Great views across the valley and up to the Large Binocular Telescope.
Hawkins Trail - Newest Graham connector trail needs some touch up work, like a bridge over to the Big Creek Trail. We off-trailed down the canyon over to Hospital Flat.
Hospital Flat - Very green and beautiful with a light creek flow.
Swift Trail - Took around to Grant Hill.
Grant Hill - We took the shorter outer loop to the big overlook. Overlook was windy, but with very clear sky views south out to Dos Cabezas, Wilcox Playa & the Chiricahuas.
Wildlife along the way - 4 white tails, hawks, buzzards, Abert's squirrel, ground nest with 4 of the smallest bird eggs I have ever seen & bear poo ... lot's of bear poo!
Thank You Addie & Graham!

Still some good snow melt flow at both creeks.
Light wildflowers and some blooming cactus.
A tad warm for me, but not bad. Got me a sock tan line today.
Slow day for wildlife, 1 deer and 1 turkey vulture.
Highlight was playing trolls under the Wet Canyon bridge!

The upper back portion of the Swift Trail reopens this Friday the 21st.
One of my favorite trips every year is to hike the road pass the locked gate before the summer crowds move in.
We took the road first up to Grant Hill then made our way down and through the campgrounds.
Always so cool seeing and having this whole area all to ourselves.
Still some big snow patches here and there and all the creeks were flowing good with snow melt.
Hot chocolate & strawberries was our break at Treasure Park before hiking back up to the start.
Lots of wildlife spotted including 10 deer, 12 turkey and a lone Abert's squirrel.
It was a good day on the Graham!

I'm telling ya, half of Safford was up that mountain today enjoying the snow.
To avoid the crowds I decided on a snowshoe down to our family's old cabin.
Beautiful winter views down the trackless road to the end.
At the cabin I measured the snow on the picnic table at just under 6 inches.
Spent the next few hours with a fire, chocolate roasted banana, hot coffee & a hammock nap before returning back to the Swift Trail.
Only 3 miles, but quite a workout for me!
Snowshoeing deserves extra credit status.
Awesome afternoon

From the Coronado sign I took the recently found cairn trail into the canyon. I don't know who plotted this route, but awesome job dude(s)!
Took the canyon up to just before the narrows. Creek had good flow and the fall colors are just starting, I thought they would be a tad more yeller :?
There were lot's of canyon tree frogs popping from the granite and I had a hawk flying over me the entire hike.
A climb up out of the canyon and the Swift Trail brought me back for the loop.
It's always beautiful up that canyon, but I'll have to hit it up again in the coming weeks for the color change.

Started today with a 2 mile walk up the Swift Trail switchbacks from Twilight.
So much easier seeing and photographing fall colors hiking up then driving.
Only rule, don't get hit by a vehicle ... light traffic today.
Then I hiked through Cluff Dairy and down the canyon to the old sawmill sight.
There was some real good color down there along with all the cool sawmill artifacts.
Also, the creek had some good flow ... not always the case down there.
I think I am now all fall colored out, time to hit up that AZ desert.

Weather forecast - Partly cloudy with slight breeze high of 42 degrees.
What I got at 9000 ft - Fully in the clouds with winds at 25, gusts up to 45 and cold AF!
I first hiked up to High Peak meadow to meet some crazy extreme weather. The aspens were golden and looked spectacular in the clouds, but I could only tolerate about an hour up there in that weather.
Next up was back down and around the mountain to Twilight. There I met the partly cloudy with slight breeze forecast. Hiked around the bend to the Heliograph Peak view and back.
Twilight CG was empty so I took advantage and had a nice quite dinner with campfire.
While sipping hot chocolate I had a lone coati wander through the campground 8)
Drove back down at sunset.
Swift Trail colors are popping and aspens are golden (on High Peak).

It's been awhile since I've done this loop.
And the loop goes - Up Noon Creek Ridge :next: Down Noon Creek Cutoff :next: Side trip to Wet Canyon :next: Swift Trail back to the start.
The Cutoff Trail was the highlight on this late afternooner, last rays of the sun hitting the forest below on the descent ... magic!
Big storm cell hitting out to the east as I walked the Swift Trail back.
Rescued a baby Gopher snake off the road ... My gummo deed of the day.
Still pretty warm and green at 6000ft, but I could see some yellow under 10,000ft Heliograph Peak.
Really enjoyed this one!

Started by driving the entire Swift Trail to it's end.
Quickie hike out to Clark Peak, found many raspberries along #301
Then looped Riggs Lake along the Lakeshore Trail #340
We rescued a bird caught up in fishing line before heading out to our fishing spot.
Caught a limit of Rainbows in under 30 minutes!
Then another hike out to the overlook behind the lake.
Tried to add Jesus Babcock #321, but could not locate the trail (another Frye Fire casualty).
On the way out we tried to hike in on the west side of Chesley Flat. Yet another trail all but gone from the Frye fire. We managed to find the aspen hidden TH sign, but no established trail remains ... Chit!
Many white tails & Abert's squirrels were spotted. Also 2 turkey and 1 red tail hawk.
Amazing sunset sky on the drive back down the mountain followed by rain.
Solid day on the Big Island, Solid partner ... Thanks for taking me AS!

The hike - Columbine up to Webb Peak :next: a bit down Chesley Flat (lost the trail) :next: down to Solider Creek :next: Swift Trail back to Columbine.
Lots of burn area, but with a very lush green forest floor and many wildflowers adding color.
Nice breezy temps up high, a few dark clouds above with a few sprinkles here and there.
3 turkeys and one white-tail spotted.

I believe half of town was on top of that mountain today.
Peace and solitude was gonna be a challenge.
Started from the noisy Cunningham CG and first hiked down Grant Creek 305.
Just a mile or so down to the big overlook, had forgotten just how good this upper trail was!
Would have loved to hiked it all the way down, but that would require a shuttle for me.
I then backtracked and hiked the Moonshine Trail down to it's big overlook.
Swift Trail back to Cunningham.
Could hear people and vehicles pretty much the whole trip, but that's what I get for going up on a summer Saturday. Still very enjoyable trails with big views!
Also saw 2 deer and a big time wildflower show.
