This is a combination of hikes with my wife, daughter, and granddaughter. We camped for two nights at Bonita Campground in Chiricahua National Monument. The biggest hike was the Natural Bridge hike at 4.8 miles. My daughter and granddaughter were not happy with me because I told them I remembered it being pretty flat. What's a thousand feet of gain between relatives?
We had a great trip and will return someday. :)

Camping trip to the Chiricahua National Monument. This hike is similar to one Kelly and I did 11 years ago. I added on the Hailstone trail and got some extra credit on the Heart of Rocks trail.
I started from the Bonita Canyon campground trail to the visitor center then up Lower Rhyolite. I made a big loop higher up taking in most all the trails.
Lots of stopping and gawking and picture taking. Many very cool sights. Highly recommended.
Only saw three people all day. One hiker from campsite #21 and two others near the visitor center.
Besides my achilles barking, a great day! :)

After doing the hike from the Visitor Center down Rhyolite and Deming to Heart of Rocks and back, we crossed the parking lot to hike this trail to the ranch and cabin. We were surprised to find out when arriving that that day was the 100th anniversary of the Chiricahua National Monument and the beginning of a weekend full of celebration and festivities!

The Chiricahua Shuttle isn't actually operating...but the Happy Wife Express offered luxury class service from Bonita Canyon Campground to Echo Canyon TH. I did the side trails to Inspiration Point and through the Heart of Rocks, both definitely worth it, and was back at the CG in time for lunch.

The shuttle was still closed for covid, but we put together our own shuttle by leaving a car at our campsite and starting at Massai Point.

Barely saw anyone the whole hike, just two sets of couples and a group of NPS trail workers who had just completed a project on the Sarah Deming trail.

Two nights in site #13 - I like how it is set off by itself. The campground is lovely and charming ... it was surprisingly well-occupied, more so than last time I visited about a year ago, but still quiet.
I am endlessly entertained by the gray jays around the campground, as well as the turkeys, deer, acorn woodpeckers, rufous-sided towhees, etc. The easy wildlife viewing here would be worth the trip even without all the great hikes and other things.
After leaving Roper Tuesday evening after work, I arrived at Bonita just at dark - and right after a pretty good rain had swept through. Only glitch in the whole trip was the bunny I ran over in Dos Cabesas. :(
I enjoyed a leisurely early morning around camp with the birds, drinking coffee and reading, before setting off on a stroll to Silver Spur Meadow, Stafford Cabin, and Faraway Ranch. This is a glorious walk that I could enjoy every day - also one of the few you can take dogs on, if that's your thing. Heard and saw turkeys along the way, and deer near the ranch.
Faraway Ranch is gorgeous and far more interesting than I thought it would be - I will definitely plan on being there on a day when the tour is offered next time.
I couldn't help but think long and hard about Karen Gonzales and the attack perpetrated on her here near the Ranch a few years ago. I am more familiar than most with the incident because I know a couple people who knew her before it happened, and one of my friends assisted with the investigation. That poor woman had gone through hell in the months before the attack, suffering through the loss of two loved ones ... only to have her head bashed in with a rock by some scumbag looking to steal her truck - while she was working in a National Monument. I almost can't even comprehend the horror. I don't know if Karen has - or ever will - fully recover, but the fact that she survived is a testament to her strength. Recently the scumbag was convicted and sentenced to over 70 years, so there's that.
Anyhow, the campground rocks and the hike rocks ... on to the next.

After hiking the Big Loop we returned to camp and chilled out for a couple of hours. We had a couple of hours to kill before starting dinner and decided to walk to the Faraway Ranch. We left directly from camp and made the easy walk. The going is very nice as you hike by Bonita Creek and see the remnants of those that lived and worked here. We were both surprised at how many buildings there are. They’re in great condition and the main house is huge! A tour would be very cool but not today. After exploring the ranch we continued west and walked to the end of the trail. The return flew by and we settled in for another evening.

After our loop of Echo Canyon we killed some time at camp and relaxed before setting out again on another walk. Flat easy walking on this trail which conveniently departs right from our campground. Early on we passed a women painting en plein air a beautiful watercolor of the meadow in the late afternoon sunlight. There is also some signage early on regarding the CCC who are responsible for many of the great trail systems in Chiricahua N.M. We also checked Faraway Ranch- this must have been awesome when it was operational. We took the trail all the way to the end and then made it back into camp just as light was fading for the day.

1st trip
the main event
hiked the big loop from the campground, which added four miles
left our stuff set up in camp, and didn't have to worry about it unsecured in my truck
started the day with a huge breakfast of eggs, hash browns, bacon and sauteed onions :)
john's coffee was excellent, too
got going around 6:30 with the connector to the visitor's center, then up rhyolite canyon
a steady ascent to echo canyon trail
the grotto is a highlight and this is one of the best trails in the park
down and up ed riggs, which had quite a bit of fire damage
another ascent up mushroom rock, where they were doing some trail reconstruction due to flooding
out to inspiration point
the fire damage was quite noticeable from here, but many signs of regeneration
views were more expansive at the expense of the trees
stayed high on big balanced rock trail, exposed to full sun but with a good breeze
then the best part of the hike: heart of rocks
fun hoodoos and rock formations
took our time here for photos
descended the sarah deming trail and closed the loop, returning to camp down rhyolite canyon
lots of trails to link, lots of different views
pretty sobering changes from the 2011 fire
wish i had a few more good pictures from 2009 for comparison
a classic loop
got a little warm the last couple miles
had lunch at the campground, packed up and hit the road
took the alternate way back to phoenix through safford, san carlos reservation and globe
really didn't take much longer than i-10
enjoyed seeing the west side of the pinalenos
had a large helping of ice cream in safford
thanks for doing the driving, john, and for your company
it was a fun trip :)

Very cool hike. The fire three years ago is very evident, but there is some regrowth and many unburned areas to enjoy. There's some beauty in the burned sections as well. Temps were a bit toasty but tolerable. We didn't see a soul on any of our hikes!

I enjoyed the camping and the company. Thanks for playing tour guide Kelly. Very enjoyable. :)

john had mentioned wanting to check out chirichua national monument sometime
i was there in 2006 and 2009, so i was up for another visit
left phoenix sunday morning and arrived at bonita canyon campground around 1:30, after a stop at the riggs family cemetery, where we saw two large owls
set up camp, made a trip to the visitor center and lounged for a couple hours
it was a little warm in the afternoon sun, so we put off hiking until later
very nice campground
saw some deer in one of the sites, almost a petting zoo
drove up bonita canyon to hike sugarloaf mountain
less than a mile up to the fire tower
had forgotten about the tunnel
was quite shocked at the fire damage on the west side of the peak
took in the views and headed back down
between hikes we wandered around massai point for a few minutes
saw a coati in the road on the drive back down
too quick for pics
next up was the natural bridge trail
a new one for me, and i really liked this one
a nice climb up to a ridgeline, then a descent into picket park
some fire damage there, too
ended with a view of the natural bridge, and it would be fun to off trail up to it next time
losing daylight on the return and finished just before sunset
the volunteer ranger told us that he saw a mama bear and two cubs right before or after we left the parking area
it would have been cool to see them
went back to camp, cooked dinner and turned in
a fun day with a new trail

Two cool shorter hikes. I'm glad Kelly knows the trails, so I just zoned out and enjoyed. :)

I wanted to return to camp at the monument to make up for being with that rowdy group last week and apologize to the campground host. He said, "Yeah I thought you looked familiar." He said there were a few complaints. Good, I didn't get banned from staying again!  The experience reminded me why I really prefer to be solo on these adventures (or at least with only a few other very like-minded folks). ;) Anyway, I got down there pretty early Friday and it was going to be very warm that low, so I drove up the mountain to see how things looked at Rustler and Barfoot Parks and kill some time at the cooler 8500 foot level.

When I got back to the monument in the afternoon it was still plenty warm, but I picked a site, paid my 6 bucks (half price for me), set up the tent, then drove to Massai Point for awhile, before coming back to camp to enjoy the evening. I get to the Chiricahua Mountains fairly often, but rarely to the monument. It really is a wonderful place! :)

- Inaugural Roper Lake State Park Ranger Hiking Club Adventure-
Starring Myself, Addie & Lauren

And there couldn't have been a better place to start then the Chiricahua National Monument!!!

We decided on the shuttle service to drop us off at Massai Point to start. On the drive up, I was telling the driver how I had come across a black bear in the road several years ago in the spot that we were driving, 30 seconds later we rounded a corner and holy :pk: there was a Huge black bear standing in the middle of the road :o What a thrill and I got a pretty good shot of him before he moved up the embankment!

From Massai Point we headed down into the HooDoo maze and spent the next 6 hours taking in all the splender of this truly amazing place, I shall never get tired of this Monument!
My 2 fellow hiking Rangers were just an absolute blast to see it all with and I can't remember the last time I have laughed so much on a hike! I also cannot remember the last time I've hiked the Monument and took under 25 pictures, but today was just about having a damn good time with 2 awesome friends - Thanks AS & LM, look very forward to #2,#3,#4 .....

My wife and I stopped at this campground to do a little hiking in the monument. We loved the campground, area, and hiking so much we stayed for two months. The campground is one on the nicest, very quaint, quiet, and beautiful. Come early in the day March and April to get an open site since it fills up almost everyday. No rigs over 29 feet and that is not and overestimate.

14JAN2012.
Hit the road at 0500 for Chiricahua National Forest. Arrived 0840 so I missed the shuttle to the top. Registered, watched a video narrated by Rex Allen, Sr. Scouted the area and the campgrounds. Good advice from Marianne (of Washington) at the campgrounds. Drove to Massai Point and hiked the interpretive trail. Drove back to Faraway Ranch for the 1100 tour with Park Service Volunteer Bill Dean. Learned a lot of history. Took photos. Hiked to the Jay Hugh Stafford cabin. 1 mile 1 AEG
Drove to Echo Canyon TH and hiked Echo Canyon Trail , Hailstone Trail and Ed Riggs Trail. 4 miles 500AEG.
Drove to Sugarloaf TH and hiked the Sugarloaf Trail up to the Fire Lookout Tour. A little sporty with snow and ice on northern parts of the trail. That tunnel is cool. 2 miles 500 AEG.
Drove back to campground. Chose campsite 1. My recent acquisition of the Coleman lantern was excellent. I am more used to Grand Canyon Backpacking instead of car camping so I forgot a few luxuries I could have enjoyed - like my Nemo pillow and some Herradura. And I could have brought firewood for the grill in the campsite. Weather was pleasant. Cloud cover kept temps in the low 40's. I added the Arizona Butterfly Guide to my library and bought the Stan Tekila Owl Book (for my daughter Jessica). Total for day 7 miles 1,001' AEG

Arrived at the Monument at noon, set up my camp and hit the Silver Spur trail at 2pm. I always see deer on this trail and as I approached the meadow, deer #1 was just inside grazing. A little further up the trail into the trees and deer #2 just watched me walk by. Another .25 mile and #3 & #4 were staring at me through the trees. I continued on to the Stafford Cabin and Faraway Ranch. Had to cut my stay here short due to the thunder letting me know that a storm was coming and I had not brought any rain gear. Made it back to the campground just as the rain started to come down.
