B, K, and I felt like hiking in some slightly cooler temps and Prescott fit the bill. Got to the trailhead before 0730 and first headed towards Watson Lake. Short road walk to get there, then we looped counter-clockwise around the lake.

Hiking thru the boulders was fun, and we made a few short exploratory side trips. The Flume Trail to the base of the dam was fun, although the water had a strong sulfur-type scent. After the dam, the trail got busier as we approached the main parking areas.

Once done with Watson, we headed over to Willow. While Watson Lake had been nearly full, Willow looked to be about half empty. We again looped counter-clockwise, walking in areas that obviously used to be submerged. The boulders were fun. Less people at Willow. We had lunch near the boat ramp. After that, we were mostly out of the boulders. Much warmer. We passed thru a section of huge cottonwood trees, then one more small area of boulders before finishing the loop.

Fun hike with a lot to see. Good day!

bruce and linda invited me to hike the watson and willow lake loops in prescott
we got going around 0715 with temps in the 40s
a short road walk to watson lake, then the loop trail counterclockwise
the route included parts of the peavine trail, lakeshore and northshore trail
nice to be around water
the east and north side trails wound through spectacular boulder terrain
we explored a few nooks & crannies, and checked out the dam
back on the road and across the dry willow lakebed
counterclockwise on this loop too
more of the boulders on the eastern part, with unique formations and striations
took a break near the boat dock and finished out the loop
a section of open flat terrain, then a more riparian environment under a canopy of cottonwoods
one more short bouldering section that topped out with a nice view
90% of this hike was new to me
was here most recently in 2013 to climb time zone wall with johnr1
missed the approach along the west side of watson lake
thanks for the invite!
nice to get out of phoenix for great weather, new terrain and good company :)

l, k and i headed out for a tour of watson and willow lakes.
a 7:20 start and low 40's felt great.
from the parking lot, we did the obligatory road walk to get to watson and start our ccw loop around the lake.

my favorite portions are once you get off of the peavine trail and on the lakeshore trail.
this trail begins the massive boulder maze.
we took a stop at the watson dam area to check the strong water flow.
to complete the watson loop, we hopped on the north shore trail.

next up was our ccw loop of willow lake.
after a short flat walk through what is sometimes a lake, we hit the boulder maze.
fun times.

after a relaxing lunch by the boat ramp, we did some more flatish walking to get to l's birding area.
this area features some of the largest cottonwoods i've ever seen.
a bit more bouldering, and we finished our loops.

good to get out with k and l again, in some cooler temps.

Was signed up for the 100. But due to an injury that prevented me from doing much on Labor Day weekend, I figured I'm probably in no condition to attempt that, so the primary goal was 50.

Started out early in Downtown Prescott, and basically followed 89 2.5 miles to the trail. Pleasant temps in the morning, nothing remarkable as I made my way up to Groom Creek trail 10 miles in. By then it was light out, and it was nice and cool for the climb up Spruce and down Smith Ravine.

On Homestead, it started warming up, and I realized I had basically no energy. I'll chalk that up to a quick turnaround from flying back across the country on Thursday evening... Didn't want to be struggling just 20 miles in, but you can't have it all. At least the breeze tempered the sun a little.

Ranch trail was where the misery really started. I expected the climb, having been on that trail a couple times, but I absolutely hated Badger Mountain Trail. Long, windy, exposed, with the type of switchbacks that were probably designed to ensure mountain bikers don't have to put in any effort at all. 11 miles to do what's probably a 3-4 mile drive... Hopefully I never have to see Badger Mountain Trail ever again.

Things improved a little on Sundog Trail, which I actually liked better than BM. Then Peavine, which is just...flat. By the time I got to the dells, it was 5pm, and I figured the sun would be down before I got to 50. The north side of Watson Lake was actually a lot of fun, and I liked trying to move through there as fast as possible. Probably the only part of the day that was legitimately enjoyable.

One of my friends was waiting for me at the Watson Boat Ramp with a beer, which was a nice surprise.

By the time I got to Willow, it was getting dark, and I had to use a light most of the way through there. There were also thunderstorms moving in, which was fun (they didn't get to Willow, but I heard it got a little crazy closer to Granite Mountain). I really don't recommend going through the dells in the dark, it definitely upped the difficulty a level or two.

After that section, I decided to make it official and not go for what would've probably been a last place finish. I'm starting to come around to one of my friends' views that 50 miles is a superior distance to 100.

Willow Lake (officially, Willow Creek Reservoir) is a haven for birds. According to birding experts, the following were seen in a single visit: tundra swans, cormorants, northern shovelers, canvasback ducks, buffleheads, mallards, northern pintails, gadwalls, ruddy ducks, green-winged teal, American wigeon, American coots, common mergansers, a bald eagle, red-tailed hawks, American kestrels a northern harrier, a canyon wren, a female belted kingfisher, black and say’s phoebes, savannah sparrows, red-winged blackbirds, and three species of grebes-western, eared and pied-billed. Depending on the season, there are songbirds and hummingbirds. I saw mallards, Canadian geese and a bald eagle while hiking. On the first Saturday of every month, the Archaeological Society, Yavapai Chapter opens the sites at the north side of the lake.

This is the high water route after the the long monsoon of 2022 and wet winter of 2023 refilled the lake. Distance is accurate for when the lake is full. Compare the April 29, 2023 photoset with the photos taken in January 2021 after several years of drought. The route departs from the trail indicated by white dots where the dots appeared to head into the water. Both the start and end of this bouldering are marked on the route.

Perfect weather in early October for another counter-clockwise hike around Willow Lake. In 2021, after a welcome monsoon began refilling the lake following a few years of drought brought the water level down ten feet or more (see the photos from my hiked in January July 2021.

A great family hike. The kids love climbing on the rocks and exploring. The adults loved the views and climbing on the rocks too. The weather was perfect. Other than getting pooped on by a bird and one kid being a little too adventurous and almost falling in the water, it was the perfect afternoon hike. I'm sure we'll be back with the kids.

Beautiful hike/run around willow lake today. Got out around 7 am and finished about 10 am. Not too bad of a time! Did some of the willow lake shoreline trail when I was finishing the loop out.

Joe suggested the PCT earlier in the year and Bruce and I jumped on board. Bruce and Route Editor broke it into three day hikes for us. This was our third and final section. This one had the most street walking but was still enjoyable with the company I had. The diverse terrain, Joe's singing capabilities and mirthful sense of humor, Bruce's cerebral conversation, and me to keep balance :D, I found hiking the Prescott Circle Trail quite entertaining. Dallin and I have very different capabilities and both did the PCT we were capable of :o  . Even this one I had to do as a slackpacker. My hats off to Dallin and the real PCT.
Another enjoyable day with Joe and Bruce in the Arizona Outdoors... :y:

We brought the PCT Trail full circle. Today was the 3rd leg Bruce created breaking the PCT into 3 reasonable segments for day hikes. I enjoyed the entire circle. That said this would be the area least appealing to most.

Started out in the first cold weather morning of the season. 'Twas spectacular skirting Watson & Willow lakes. The tail end of Autumn Foliage had the massive cottonwoods screaming y(h)ellow in the low morning sun.

The majority of the hike along Pioneer Pkwy, Williamson Valley Rd and a local neighborhood would unlikely interest the masses. Personally I enjoyed seeing how it connected but wouldn't be jumping for a redo.

We hiked this man club style doing each segment in the direction of the most aeg. Which was an appreciated group tactic to keep me from crying like a baby👶

Thx to B&D for setting up all the necessary shuttles!

The final leg of our 58 mile loop around Prescott, started at the Peavine TH in the low 40's.

The low morning sun cast intriguing shadows on the rocks and trees around Watson Lake. The lake was busy with waterfowl of all types. Willow Lake was just as thick with ducks and geese.

We climbed out of Willow Lake, to Emery Riddle and an RC plane doing aerobatics.

The middle section today was a pleasant mix of tall grasses, mixed conifer, rolling hills, and long views.

After lunch we made the final push ending in a gorgeous stand of pines.

It was great catching up after five weeks away from the gang.

There is FREE parking on the parking lot off of Willow Lake Road (not in the park) or on Willow Parkway. To park at the park its $3 for an all day pass but free on Wednesdays. Noted for future trail runs.

The portion of trail/route between 12 and 3 of the lake is up and down in "The Dells"... there are lots of side trails and merging trails, at times requiring a little "route finding". However, in lieu of cairns, there are obnoxious white dots spray painted on the supposed trail/route.... I felt like Pac Man, eating white dots. But there were no ghosts chasing after me so there ya go.

Made a little side trip to summit the dam.

Water level of the res appeared down about 5 to 8'.

Future trail runs, will park on the free lot on Willow Parkway, then run clockwise to the dock and return and skip the dells portion.

The convocation of Deb and I spent, a portion of the day playin' in the bolder wonderland of The Constellation Trail System and Willow Lake.

I was surprised to still see the Cormorants in the Huge Cottonwood tree, on the Cottonwood Spur trail. I counted at least 8 nests in that tree with 16+. The roosting noises they make are a cross between the oinking of a pig and the noises penguins make. Kind of eerie actually.

There are endless possibilities out here, with the two lakes in close proximity to each other and all the bolder exploring you could do.

It got a little warmer than the forecast high I believe, but the breezes kept it tolerable.

Last summer I spent several hours tracing up the constellation trails. Driving by the area intrigued me so I looked it up online. Prescott is dialed in on being a trail friendly community and it shows in all the details.

On a whim I remembered and mentioned it to Bruce. He made it sing adding in Willow and Watson lakes. Prescott hadn't been an area that intrigued me much other than Granite & Groom. It's been growing on me a little over the years.

Yesterday I pulled a leg muscle. This seemed easy enough that I could hobble it out with a trekking pole.

The Constellation Trails are well marked with "you are here" maps at major junctions. The area was popular on this chilly April morning and on our return with more families. If you're an avid hiker with family/friends that get bored/whiny after a mile or two they might enjoy a little loop through this disneyland of granite.

Bruce sold the Willow leg as the boring part of the hike. We all enjoyed it more than expected. Temps and a little jaunt through huge cottonwoods on the peninsula did the trick.

Like all of the loop I'd never been to the famed Watson Lake. Seems like everyone gets a great photo here and now I know why. Aravaipa Running had an event going on. Ray and I held back a tad as Bruce hiked by the onlookers and through the finish line backwards. They cheered finishers coming in and didn't yell at him so we proceeded. A minute or two later I was standing at the postcard shot of the lake. Not a cloud in the sky when we started but they raced in just as we arrived. After marveling the scene I noticed the perfect snow capped San Francisco Peaks back yonder. Wow... forwards, backwards and upside-down Mom!

We lunched overlooking Granite Creek just before the dam. Squads were out enjoying the weekend lake vibes. After lunch Bruce escorted us over to the dam. Water shoots out from high above. It would be really nice on a hot day. Continuing on is a cottonwood paradise high above the creek. This would be another great area to take non hiking friends for an hour of piddling around as parking is near.

To make the loop work we needed to cross private property. Got lucky as a man was taking out trash to the garbage. Ray asked the REI shirted gentleman and our dream loop came true.

This hike put Prescott on the map for me.

The more I hike around Prescott, the more I like it. Joe tossed out a starting point (the Constellation trails) for this hike and Bruce filled out the rest. The result is a gem. A beautiful granite landscape dominates a big chunk of the hike while giant cottonwoods add variety and splendor along the way. The weather, while a bit windy at times, was perfect otherwise. We did have to improvise to connect the dots, but it worked out well. Lots of large swarming gnats chased us around the east side of Willow Lake on the return, but that was a minor inconvenience for a few minutes on an otherwise great hike.

Bruce and Joe, thanks for inviting me along. As always, I had a tremendous time!

Joe through a dart at the Constellation Trail system and said, come up with something. I didn't know anything about this "Little Gem" so I started downloading stuff. There are 11 trails in the Constellation Trail system, totaling less than 5 miles. So that wasn't going to make the drive to Prescott worth it. I'd looped Watson lake before and enjoyed the heck out of it. I'd always wanted to loop Willow Lake also, so it was on.

The Constellation Trail System is a wonderful group of of short trails through a boulder wonderland. Officially it's a self-enclosed system. But as we found on the way back, there is a trail that connects this with the Willow Dells system and Willow Lake. The Ron James Approach Trail does not show to connect on the maps, but it does. There is no signage and it's not obvious though.

All but the east side of Willow Lake looked like just a means to connect the loop, but then we stumbled on the Cottonwood Spur. Some of the biggest Cottonwood stands I've seen. `

A little road walk got us back over to the Willow Dells Trails.

Once again the hiking was great, except for 1/2 hour bug storm we ran through.

I really enjoyed looping these two Granite infested lakes, and the weather was perfect!

A great time out with the Squad.

On the day....A Gopher snake, Squirrels, Cottontail rabbits, Cormorants, all sorts of Ducks, Bluejays, Blue Herons, A hawk diving out of the sky right in front of us snagging a bird.

We hiked the Prescott Circle Trail portion of this loop... only the west to east on the south boundary of the park. We did not do the "loop". (I should add that we attempted the loop a year or two ago but the east end of the lake had flooded the trail and it was not passable. And on another occasion we attempted it from the North access and the rock climbing got us stopped.) We started at the dog park TH. This is an acknowledged birding area and there were folks with tripods and equipment (cameras? binoculars) enjoying the wild life from the edge of the lake. The east end where we exited, there is a milkweed patch where migrating Monarchs are seen (and counted) every year. The trail is smooth and wide and usually has very good footing ... some mud there though today due to recent precipitation. There is a gentle rise in the middle but it is for the most part the trail is fairly flat.

Watson Lake Circle Trail should be renamed “Links (not Lynx) Lake Circle Trail”

I did Watson clockwise and Willow counterclockwise. These loops are okay but in both cases the part in the Granite Dells is very cool while the rest is a bit monotonous. I saw very few people on either loop. Weather was great, a bit cool at the beginning but very pleasant later.
