Little day trip out to Prescott for some running, hadn't been to White Spar in years so I decided to start there and head up Prescott Circle towards Wolverton Mtn. The TH area is way different than I remembered, seems it has been greatly expanded in recent years. Temperatures were reasonable to start off, and the grade up towards Wolverton Mtn is mostly gradual.

When I got to the Aspen Creek junction (~5 miles) I decided I need to do a little more, so I headed north-ish on Aspen Creek to an unsigned junction that is in here as Moby Trail. This is an old road that is now nice trail, and it was generally pleasant as it skirted the east slope of Mt Francis. Eventually I got to the ridge on the east side of Copper Creek and headed down that trail to Aspen Creek to make it a loop.

By the time I got back to the Quartz Mountain area it was starting to get a bit warm, but there was an occasional breeze. I decided to fast track it and took the road down from Quarts Mountain, which probably saves a half mile or so. Ran out of water just as I got back to White Spar.

Prescottstyle and I started hiking just before 9:00 a.m. Before we even crossed the road, I had to turn around: My shuttle driving wife couldn’t find the vehicle GPS I programmed for our pickup. The “missing” GPS was in our SUV’s back seat foot well. 😘

The first 1¼ miles has some decent shade, before crossing FR 9707V, and entering the old Indian Fire (2002) burn scar. The fire gods giveth and the fire gods taketh: The pine burned to stubs, but the manzanita are doing great! It’s shrubbery & views, instead of trees & shade. Good thing I liberally applied SPF 90 spray back at White Spar.

There is a new, undedicated, rest bench on Hill 6103’s northeast slope, at the 2¼ mile mark. It was actually chained down.

The pet cemetery I found next to the Wolverton Mountain gate eleven years ago [ photo ] is now almost indistinguishable.

From the gate, Trail #9415 begins descending. It ends after just over five miles at Trail #48. Left heads towards Copper Creek; Right towards my hopefully waiting wife. The final ¾ mile is the shadiest part of this Prescott Circle Trail segment. At the 5¼ mile mark, there is a pretty, small, fall that that unfortunately had no water.

My wife was indeed waiting! So, we drove back into town, to La Casa Prescottstyle, for the roasting of weenies, consuming of beer, and petting of dogs. 🐶

Did the Whiskey Basin 91k on a tremendous saturday. Had nice clouds for a lot of the warmer part of the day. This route linked up a million trails and basically incorporated the entire Prescott Circle Trail around Prescott, starting and finishing at Watson Lake.

My plan was to jog whatever flat and downhill I could and just quickly hike the rest, since that is how I have been moving lately and I wanted to see if I could pull off an ultramarathon this way. It actually worked well and I had plenty of time to spare.

The route itself is beautiful mixing in high desert, juniper and pine country. Really spectacular.

I felt pretty good most of the time. Had some low back pain towards the end. The girls met me at mile 6 and 37 and that was truly a delight.

Did less than an hour at the end by headlamp and that was it. T shirt the whole time and the temps were perfect. Got hot a little in the middle section and got doused with ice water at mile 32 which was heavenly. it clouded up after that for what would have otherwise been the hottest and most exposed part so that was delightful

This hike is from the White Spar Trailhead parking lot for five miles (10 miles roundtrip) and includes almost all of Wolverton Mountain Trail #9415 which starts across AZ 89 from the entrance to White Spar Campground. On other days, I have gone to the end of Wolverton Mountain Trail, but my goal on this trip was to get in ten miles as easily and quickly as possible. To get the full ten miles, I had to go past the high point of the trail which meant after turning around I had to climb back up to that high point. There are no other climbs on the return trip, except to cross the low ridge in the last mile that parallels AZ 89.

Highlights of the trip include the view of Thumb Butte aligned with Granite Mountain (see photo) and a few miles of rocks that have fallen from Quartz Mountain over the years. After the first mile, Wolverton Mountain Trail begins its upward climb to the saddle between Quartz Mountain and Wolverton Mountain. Along much of this stretch you will see quartz with veins of rose pink, yellow to gold, black and even orange. A few examples are in the photos. The photos include one of the sections with the most quartz along and in the trail.

Decided to post this gem I previously found in Aug. '21. This time started from a diff spot, added the high point & turned around at the jct.

This was a hit with the group. Heads up, closure on I-17 N all weekend. Went out for food/drinks in downtown Prescott afterward. Very advanced and fun group. Temps felt cooler than expected.

Got dropped off at Aspen Trailhead on Copper Basin Road, and hiked up Aspen Draw and Wolverton Mountain trails to the summit of Wolverton Mountain. Nice views on Wolverton Trail, it had been many years since I had hiked it last. Found the social (?) trail that drops off the north face to Sheriffs Posse Road and walked it back to the parents house. Fun mini-adventure.

Belated post. Took advantage of a three day weekend and got up to Prescott for some cool, pine shaded hiking. It’s been far too long since I visited this area…probably well over a year :( Wanted to do a simple in and out on the Wolverton and test out my new Garmin :)

Got to the White Spar Campground TH a little before 6am to overcast skies. I had driven through this area half a dozen times and never noticed the Wolverton trail that starts across the road from the campground. It’s a solid trail and deserves to be noticed. The trail starts off by doing some weaving and mild climbing through pine trees. Within the first mile I had probably gone everyone direction on the compass; that’s how much twisting and turning this trail does. This is not a bad thing. I enjoy these types of trails for my hikes and runs and I’m sure this would be especially joyful for those who bike. In a little under a mile the trail bridged a hill before descending into a valley. This is a short respite, because the trail quickly crosses the valley and begins a gradual but steady climb for the duration of the hike. Shortly after leaving the valley, I also left the trees. Not a bad deal today, because I had the clouds with me for the duration of the hike. However this section (maybe 2.5 miles) is very exposed with little shade from the sun. When I hit 9415A, I took the detour and visited the White Spar knoll. When I reached the top of knoll it brought back memories that I had been here before, almost a decade ago, when I had done the Aspen trail. Definitely worth the revisit. Continuing on Wolverton, the trail continues to climb very pleasantly. Probably, the easiest 1000 ft gain one can hope for in a hike or run. When I reached the gate (around the 4.5 mile mark) the trail switched from a single track to a road. I went to the end to where it junctures with the Aspen trail and turned around. Didn’t care for this last stretch. I’m not really a “road” person and it seemed like a sad way to end what had been a very nice trail. On the way back I visited Wolverton Mountain. I followed a trail that I thought would lead to the top. Instead it led to a fenced water tank. I then had to scramble through the brush to reach the top, only to discover a bench and a user trail leading down the north side of the mountain :? The benched area provided nice views to the south and east. The user trail was easy to follow. It split very quickly after leaving the top. One returned to the Wolverton trail the other continued down the north side of the mountain. My goal was to do the Wolverton trail so I returned to that and headed back to the TH. Over all a very nice trail. No wildlife. Encountered 2 bikers and 2 hikers.

Traffic jam from anthem-Black Canyon City. 😧 Caused for a late start. Saw 1 person finishing as I was starting, that's it. 🙂 Couple other unmarked trails intersect early on.

Spotted the old trail which has been covered up near #9415A. The climb then begins to intensify, allowing for greater views. Past the gate it turns to a 2 track. Explored trail 48 a bit & it appears to have much potential.

On the way back I tried a side trail which led to a nearby road. Decided to briefly bushwack back to the trail. By the time I returned the parking lot was empty. Then off to Wildflower just as they were bout to close. 🍴

We decided to try to do all of the Prescott Circle Trail, we've done small parts of it already, but we're going to make a concerted effort. Weekend 1, the 6 mile segment from Aspen Creek TH to White Spar Campground. We left my truck at the White Spar Campground and my wife drove us over the Aspen Creek TH. There were warnings on the way about high clearance and what not, it seemed like a typical sedan would be fine, at least when it's dry. Right off the bat, trail #48 dips into a dry creek area with fall colors (a real treat for our first fall after moving from Phoenix) and boulders, It's a pretty gentle climb for about two miles, then we took a little detour to the peak of Wolverton Mtn, or close to it... there's a fenced off section with razor wire up there that I expect is a decommissioned microwave tower or something, it's not a great peak to arrive at, but it's a short easy detour, so why not. We saw a trail maintenance crew out there and could see they had cut the vegetation way back. The rest of the hike was downhill and made for really easy walking. You get great views of most of the Prescott area from up there and somehow we could see Humphreys better than from our house, which is closer. The trail was easy to follow and though it had some offshoot trails, the signs were very clear.

Quite the line of traffic heading north this morning on the I-17, even for 5am. Starting temps in the low 60's (brrr) and finished at about 92 degrees. Long 4.5 climb up Wolverton out and back. Topped it off with a loop around Goldwater Lakes. Was definitely a challenging ride today. Returned to Phoenix through Yarnell.

john and i are looking for new territory these days
after my hike with tibber last sunday, was looking at all the trails in the same area
wolverton was one part of longer hikes that the three amigos (bruce, joe, denny) and kingsnake had done
plus, it had a peak along the way :)
got going around 0730 with clear skies and temps in the 50s
a gradual uphill took the chill off
the first couple miles wind through oak and pine trees on a good trail
then a couple of miles through a burn area, exposure more noticeable on the return
had a portion of bruce's track loaded but really didn't need it
the description makes it seem like there might be some route finding due to unmarked trails
maybe because it's part of the prescott circle trail, the route is obvious and well signed
kingsnake had recommended at visit to quartz mountain, so we made that side trip first
well worth a stop, with some beautiful rock on the summit and good views of the entire prescott area
continued west to the wolverton mountain turnoff
made the quick trip to the top and enjoyed a snack break in a little area with a bench
dropped back down and went to the junction with aspen creek trail, where angela and i were last weekend
the last mile was back in mixed forest
views of mt. francis, granite mountain and thumb butte along the way
almost all downhill on the return, finishing to a packed trailhead around 1130
enjoyed the trail, but the two side trips really made the hike
nice area, fun to do something new and different, and definitely more to explore
john bought lunch at the raven - cool place, good food
good times! thanks, john

As always trail segments above are in the order hiked. After an initial trailhead photo I did not take another worthy candidate until 12 miles into the hike midway through Wolverton Mountain Trail #396. Which was off the official trail on a short scratchy jaunt to the summit of the namesake. Which had a nice bench for our lunch.

Garden Grove Trail #392 & Aspen Creek Trail #48 nurtured my higher ranking in late spring when water flowed in the creeks. Still a nice forest stroll anytime.

Goldwater Lake Trail #396
The highlight of the day, possibly the entire circle trail. If you live for best of, lack time or really don't care for the hiking part of hiking this is your ticket. Well at least the eastern half anyhow. Easy rolling trails, pines galore with happy oaks and lake views to tickle your fancy.

Synopsis
I enjoyed the hike in full with fab company. The short side trip up Wolverton was worthy. Autumn appeared to be singing high notes a week earlier. 56.9 ounces of water was 4-8 short but close enough. Ending a 21 mile hike with a 1.8 lb pack is pretty sweet. Keep reaching for the stars @te_wa! Okay I cheated... Thx to Denny for carrying my long sleeve shirt after it warmed up. We saw a good variety out recreating along the trail!

Hike 104 with Denny and 274 with Joe had us on Act 2 of 3 for us on the Prescott Circle Trail.

Perfect weather and many first time trails for me.
All of these trails for the most part are impeccably kept.

Javelina #322 starts on a nice smooth ole road that meanders through the pines and an old homestead.

Garden Grove #392 is much better in the spring with the trickling creek next to you, but is still very nice.

Potts Creek 327 and Cold Springs 393, both have some real pretty areas, especially around the Camp Stein area.

Aspen Creek trail #48 is a gentle climb through the pines getting to the Wolverton Mountain Trail #9415.

We went up the spur road to the Wolverton Summit. It affords some great views of the surrounding areas.
[ youtube video ]
Getting to the Wolverton Summit was a little bit of a bushwhack for us. It appears on Sat. view , that someone has cut another option that we SHOULD have tried, but thought was going in the wrong north direction off the peak.

I've been on Goldwater Lake Trail #396 numerous times and I'll be back to that one. Just a beautiful walk through the hillsides with tons of shady pines, smooth roller coaster trails, and views of the lakes. It's a fun area to explore if you get a chance. It will not be without people though, for those of you that dislike humanity.

This was our second leg of the PCT that Bruce has mercifully dissected into three doable sections. Joe picks the direction that works best for him. With the threat of a whine like an injured rabbit we abide by his wishes. The shuttle set up went smoothly due to the early start, I believe. We were hiking by 7:30 with a nice cool temp. I concur with Joe that the section around the Goldwater Lakes is primo. Although I thought this whole section of the PCT was enjoyable. Bruce added in a short side trip to the top of Wolverton Mountain. Nice little mountain with views and a bench to sit on for lunch. The name of the mountain had me singing an ol country song from back in the 60's. The song was about a man named Clifton Clowers and someone trying to court his daughter. The man really did exist, lived to be 102, and is buried on a Wolverton mountain in Arkansas. Real spelling Woolverton. We were not the only ones to enjoy the PCT this fine day. I counted 27 other hikers, 19 mountain bikers, 11 dogs, and 5 deer. I didn't count the birds, squirrels, lizards and such :o . All and All a great day on the trail. I did have a sore knee and foot but that's on me :) . Bruce had to be home by a certain time so he headed home while Joe and I grabbed a bite to eat. Good times. Thanks my friends, :yr:

I run this trail a lot and if you are looking for a great challenge, you are in for a treat! I usually start from the trail head on White Spar where there is water available for the return. The first 1.5 mi will be in shaded forest with a slight incline. The rest of the trip will be in the open so be sure to carry sunscreen in the summer.
You will start to see Wolverton Mountain about 2 miles into the run. The climb is a little dreadful for a few miles with some portions above 10% grade. The terrain can be a little technical with loose rock, especially during monsoon season.
You will be rewarded for the hard work with beautiful views of mount Union on one side, Thumb Butte and Granite Mountain on the other.

Despite leaving home 15 minutes later normal (5:30 a.m.) managed to arrive at the trailhead 30 minutes ahead of time (7:30 a.m.), without any more speeding than normal. Personally, I'd avoid camping at White Spar, as Hwy. 89 traffic noise is too obvious.

My plan was to hike Wolverton Mountain Trail #9415, Aspen Creek Trail #48 and East Copper Trail #260. According to my route, it was supposed to be 10.91 miles and 1923 AEG. Since those numbers are always low, I figured it would be a 12 mile, 2000 AEG day.

Trail #9415 started out through a mile of damp high top pine. As with Trail #48, the trail surface is very smooth, but the route is unnecessarily twisty. I suspect it was optimized for mountain biking, rather than hiking. (I saw four bikers and no hikers along the two trails.) After a mile, #9415 began edging along a large burn area, to the south, away from town, where there was not a single living pine tree. Not one. :o Any idea when that fire was?

After three miles, I cut up to FR 9707V, which curls around the south side of what I now refer to as Quarry Hill. I heard ATVs up in the quarry, so when I heard them coming back my way I ducked down behind some bushes in case they were miners. I spent a fair bit of time exploring the hill, hoping for some shafts, adits, equipment -- anything -- but finding only some quarry digs. The white rock was beautiful. The summit had incredible 360° views of Thumb Butte, Little Granite Mountain, Granite Mountain, Prescott, Spruce Mountain, Union Mountain, and Mt. Francis. If you do Trail #9415, I highly recommend this small diversion.

I stopped by the first gate to take a wizz. After I finished, I realized I was only a few feet from a grave. I would have been mortified had I accidentally peed on it. Turns out there were three graves in the pet cemetery.

As far as the hiking itself goes, Trail #48 was the highlight, with lots of shade and only some slight up & downs.

At the hike's highpoint, in the saddle between Mt. Francis and Hill 6872, you can see all the way to Peeples Valley and Yarnell Hill.

Trail #260 was steep, rocky and slippery. Almost fell a couple of times. :| Despite black clouds and heavy rain over the Bradshaws, I only experienced a minute of invisible drizzle, near the end of my hike. Hiked the last four miles with a massive blister on my left heel. Ooh-rah. :D

On the way back into Phoenix, I usually stop at the Culvers on Deer Valley Rd., but I just wasn't feeling it. Wife made a great suggestion to stop at Boston Market on Bell & 3rd St. instead. Calorie replacement ensued.
