did a counter clockwise loop from the Brown's Ranch TH with a side trip over to the new interpretive trail at Brown's Ranch, which is pretty cool. I've walked through that area before, but it's nice to have the info that shows and explains what you're looking at.

From there the loop was Buckshot, High Desert, Cholla Mtn loop, Watershed, Maverick, Vaquero and Chuckwagon Trails. The early start and higher elevation up there made it a little cooler than in Phoenix, so it wasn't the scorching heat that we'll have soon enough.

Not too much traffic on the trails. Mostly bikers, one trail runner. Less traffic as the morning wore on and the temperature started to heat up. No wildlife, spotted two more saguaros that have crested arms.

Duane and I arrived at Brown's Ranch TH about 10:30 am and it was already warm enough to shed the long sleeve layer. Short-sleeve December hiking is our reward for enduring the summers, I suppose.

I chose this loop for its similarity in difficulty to last week's MSP hike while I reestablish my trail legs after time away. MSP trail stewards were posted at the ramada being their usual helpful selves.

Our intent was to follow Upper Ranch to the northern terminus with Cone Mountain but I kept right instead of left at the four-way junction with Wrangler and we soon found ourselves grabbing elevation along the southern flank of Brown's Mountain.

[in Bugs Bunny's voice]: I musta taken a wrong turn at Albuquerque.

We retraced our steps back to the junction. Thus, our intended three-miler became a five-miler. I get lost in my steps quite easily so these sorts of backtracks are nothing unusual for me.

The trip around the western side of Cone Mountain looks completely different from the east side. It's another one of those wonderlands of granite which really help to give the landscape a fun contrast in textures. Didn't get to see any wildlife this time around but I have no doubt it was seeing us.

I hadn't expected to tackle that kind of mileage so soon. Other than feeling a bit more sun-kissed than I had figured on being, I handled it pretty well. No post-hike energy crash but still am wishing my lower back wasn't so unhappy all the time at the end. In spite of it, I'm looking forward to spending much more time exploring MSP this winter.

Wanted a flatter hike today to save my back so I went out to Brown's Ranch in the Sonoran Preserve North.
I thought the loop I planned would be a cakewalk but I underestimated the roller coaster of the Cone Mountain Trail. Up down, up down, up down. Felt tougher than the numbers in the heat. I made a wrong turn near the end which added a mile to the hike but I'm glad to have completed 6 more miles on my new spine. :)

Talked to a couple of stewards at the TH and I asked them if they knew fellow steward and HAZ member @Sun_Ray. The woman was aquainted with Brian but the the fellow with her denied his existence.

I used to come out here in High School for "boondockers"...basically just big parties in the desert for underage beer drinking. We called it Brownie's Place. Brownie was the son of E.O. Brown, the ranch namesake. He also owned D.C. (Desert Camp) Ranch. I tried to find the location of a historic [ photo ] of the ranch to do a pic-mimic in my photoset but I hiked past it and didn't feel like back tracking.

Would you drive 35 minutes to lower the temperature by 7 degrees? Tibber would. It was a wonderful hike.
I knew I wanted some elevation, but also to build up some miles as I slowly get back to hiking. There were 4 bikers and 2 hikers with dogs during my route. On the backside, no one.

On the way, I ran into a bunny, the first of a half-dozen. I must have been interuppting their happy hour. It was nice to enjoy this plush desert, even at the end of summer. The chollas were puffy, the soap tree yuccas past prime but still tall and green in stature, and the saguaros were looking good as well. I guess after seeing Andy's video of the destruction of some of our Western Superstitions :lone:, it made me appreciate our desert even more.

I was out here last spring but had come up the backside of Brown's. My memory of coming down last spring sure wasn't what I remember as I made my way up Brown's. There's much more sweeping switchbacks and such so, for me, it made for a nice steady gain in elevation before that last steep push. Going down the northside seems longer than I remember. The good news is, however, it looks like they've done some trail work, as it was pretty beat up.

In the distance I could see where the fire had burned a pretty wide swatch. Needed my other camera to get a better view but I didn't have it with me. I always enjoy the sun bringing out the gold of the grass which then accents the trees and cactus. Once I reached the bottom I had the choice of east or west. I chose east as it was a tad longer. I'm glad I did as it was sure pretty through here.

I came across the new Interpretive Trail they are putting in. I'm a little surprised it's about two miles from the trailhead. I enjoyed my environment very much as I would catch myself smiling many times. My photos turned out so well, too. My hike concluded with a rabbit fest as I saw four more.

I've been going to gym classes all summer so am surprised my quads are a little sore.

Quite a few prickly pear on north side, same with yuccas. A few of the ocotillo toward saddle had leaves.

I met Brian at the Brown's Ranch TH just after 6am. I hadn't been up to this area in a while and with the heat kicking in, this is usually a good spot because the trails are pretty easy to hike. I was open to anything, and Brian hadn't done the West Express Trail yet.

From the TH, we took Brown's Ranch Road to the Upper Ranch Trail, to Basalt Ridge, and then the Powerline Road #1 up to the north end of the West Express Trail. From there, we hiked southbound on West Express to it's endpoint where it meets the Latigo Trail. We hiked back on that to the Powerline Road #2. We had planned on getting back on Latigo where it crosses the powerline, but the heat was kicking in pretty good, so we just stayed on the powerline road until Upper Ranch again and got back to the TH.

The last mile or so I was feeling the heat. Brian's first choice for this hike was Owl Hoot, which would have been close to 14 miles RT. I was at my limit for the day once we got just over 11. 2 more months until reasonable weather it seems.

Kelly wanted to get away from Papago, so after a short stint at work we were off to the Brown's Ranch area. Temps were chilly and windy with a bit of rain and hail/graupel. When the sun came out it felt rather nice. Saw six other hikers and a couple mountain bikers.
Good to get back out this way. Thanks Kelly. :)

Beautiful morning for a hike. Quite a few hikers out close to the TH, but, as always, the numbers petered out a few miles away. All I'd see was MTB'ers after that. The overcast skies kept things comfortable.

Beautiful hike with a surprising amount of green & wildflowers for mid-May! We even got to see a Gila Monster stomping away from the trail! Lots of birds and lizards too. The trail up to the summit is loose & gravely. Great views.

Amazingly quiet for a Saturday in super bloom wildflower season. If you get to summit via Upper Ranch and Wrangler - that’s the quiet way. No poppies. Lots of brittle bush. Smattering of lupine and globemallow and fairy sister. Rare pink blooms on hedgehog cactus. Jogged a little on the way back to car. Wore a new hat that is a little bit old lady but keeps sun off and frankly I am a little bit of an old lady 😂. Turned 50 last week. Happy to have neck, back, knees in good shape and after changing my eating habits I’m back to my high school weight - so can’t complain. Grateful for a spring morning of solitude. Back to Mom shuttle duties soon.

... still catching up from my wildflower hikes:
Well I'm still on my wildflower hunt so I thought I would try the McDowell Sonoran Preserve plus I've been wanting to get out here for a few weeks now, and on a weekday.  The temps were supposed to be warmer today, but with a slightly filtered sun, it should be just right.  I decided on the Cone/Brown clockwise loop.  At the trailhead, I talked of my route to the docent who asked, he warned me of a rattlesnake on the Wrangler.

I could tell right away that wildflowers were not showing yet and that was fine; it should mean less filming/picture taking and more hiking.  What was I thinking?  After all, this is a lush part of the Sonoran Desert and out here, it was big and there were boulders scattered about as well.  I ran into quite a few hikers on the Upper Ranch Trail in the first mile.  One seemed relieved they were only 1/2 mile from the TH.  The sky was pretty for most of the hike and the filtered sun made for some nice picture taking and movies :D

This Preserve is well-signed but not perfectly as I missed my turn on the Cone Mountain Loop Trail and when I realized I was headed on the northeast side of Cone Mountain, I backtracked to the intersection with the Wrangler Trail.  The trail swings pretty wide as it traverses the lower regions below Cone Mountain on the south side.  There were dots of poppies but lots of Wiry Lotus.  You start seeing more boulders closer to the trail as you get toward the southwest side.

As I rounded the west side the clouds seemed to join together to create a slight overcast.  There was a bit of a breeze and I was surprised that it had a cold feel which was rather nice; at least now.  I went through one section with lots of tall Desert Lavender and there were even a couple blooms.  The little valleys you pass through would have bigger patches of poppies.  The other thing I would start seeing more of was the Soap and Banana Yucca plants; especially once I headed north on Cloudburst Trail where I should have headed west on Cone Mountain Trail to catch the trail below Brown's.  I didn't even think to check RS and my "pin to track" must not have been on to notify me.  As I kept going north, but then west, and zigzagging, I still thought I was going the right way; especially when I reached the Hawknest Trail and finally started heading east.

The Loop doesn't list the individual trails so I'll have to keep that in mind when I do these loops out here.  Fortunately, it was fabulous terrain and I was entertained by the desert flora and saguaros.  I kept thinking maybe I had been out this way before and looking back, last year I was on the Hawknest Trail but from the south to Cloudburst and along the west and south side of Cone back to Pima/Dynamite TH.  This part of the Hawknest I had not been on.  It had a few cool little valleys that Mother Nature did a very nice job of decorating.  I really enjoyed those.

I was glad to be going east but then I got concerned with how far east was I going?  Eventually I came to another intersection with the Basalt Ridge Trail which would take me south to where I wanted to be.  This was also a nice little section of trail.  Off to the southeast I could see this long patch of green so I tried to zoom and get pictures as it really stood out; looked like it had been manicured even.  The summit looked so small from here as I continued.

And then I finally arrived at where I should have been a few miles ago, the Upper Ranch Trail and Brown's Mountain Trail.  And, believe it or not, I had gotten slightly chilly the last mile or so.  Up I went observing the trail had been beaten up pretty bad from people using it when it was wet or slightly so.  There are a couple bedrock areas to walk over which is something I like.  It's not a tough hike up and there are a couple flatter places where you can catch your breath, or in my case, take pictures of the distant views which were showing up very distinctly.  It's when you take pictures of those mountains/mesas that you realize what a huge valley :o we live in and we're lucky to have a few mountains in the valley to climb up.

I debated whether I would do the short trail to the summit but since the wind had let up a little and it's a short hike I headed on up Brown's Summit Trail.  A family had gone up before me like they were goats.  I was glad I summited as the views with this light and our.... you guessed it, green desert floor, the area was beautiful :app: .  Those distant views to the Superstitions and layered looks to the west were even more pronounced now it seemed.  And because of that light, the Four Peaks with their remaining snow were photographing beautifully as well.  I actually sat down, had a mini Kind bar, and responded to a text from my brother.  The sun came out for a bit and warmed me up too.  But it was getting late so I headed back down.  I did slip and fall on the loose rock but no big deal.  However, I will note, the trail down to the saddle may be short, but it is slick.  Gosh, the last time I was up there was 2014 so I was due.

And now for the last 1 1/2 miles on the rest of the Brown's Mountain Trail back to the TH.  There were still people coming up, the Park closes at 6:25 and it was around 5 now.  The trail zig zags down so it makes for changing views and still not much in the way of wildflowers, but there was plenty of other interesting desert flora that we don't get to see as much of over on the Phoenix Preserves. The limited sun was trying to light up Cholla and Granite Mountains. The sky colors were somewhat muddy but I was still able to frame up some tall Soaptree Yucca.

And now to enjoy my huckleberry beer after another successful hike, even though I actually get a little more tired when I do all that filming as it takes longer.

Once again, I took a lot of movies but wow, what a beautiful day and great filming conditions :) .  The light really made the distant areas show off and of course, still snow on the mountains.  The views from the summit were outstanding in this light, trust me:

Wanted to check out trail at the Pima Dynamite Trail, so hobbled together some trails to make a 10.6 mile loop. Trails (in order) are:
01. Hawknest Trail (0.4+0.8+0.8+0.2+0.2+0.5+0.5+0.1+1.5) = 5.0 miles
02. Basalt Ridge Overlook (0.1+0.1) = 0.2 miles
03. Basalt Ridge Trail (0.3) = 0.3 miles
04. Upper Ranch Trail (0.6+0.5+0.1) = 1.2 miles
05. Rustler Trail (0.7) = 0.7 miles
06. Latigo Trail (0.1+0.6+0.4+0.4+0.7+0.5) = 2.7 miles

The land is pretty flat in this area, but the clouds made for some good photos. Also of note, the Hawknest Trail GPS associated with the guide doesn't seem to come all the way down to this trailhead, but the official map and actual tracks show it does, so I think this may be an additional amount of trail added to the Hawknest trail.

I'll upload the loop track.

This was my second hike north of the McDowells. Kelly had an old track with two peaks on it that provided a basis for our hike. We altered the hike from the track a couple times. Not unusual for our hikes.
We started hiking not long after first light. It was chilly, but within an hour or two we back down to summer hiking attire. Saw a couple coyotes near the trailhead.
The ascent up little Granite was off trail. Lots of rough granite boulders, catclaw, and other not so friendly brush on the way. We triumphed eventually after taking a more difficult route than necessary.
After descending we were looking over at Browns Peak, so off we went. The trail up to the peak is in good shape and not as steep as I suspected it might be. Good summit views.
Our next target was Cholla Mountain. After checking the time and remaining mileage, we decided to save Cholla and Fraesfield mountains for another day.
The trails here are all in good shape and well signed. Excellent for novice mountain bikers, of which we saw many. Beautiful desert flora and rock formations as well.
Fun hike. Thanks Kelly. :)

john hit me up to hike little granite mountain and cholla mountain in the mcdowell sonoran preserve north
we got going around 0700 or so
chilly temps - upper 30s when we started
bootlegger to the east side of granite mountain
we didn't take the best line on the ascent
our route was better on the descent going off west from the saddle
off trail in the mcdowells is slow going with sticker bushes, loose gravel and bouldering
it's also frowned upon by the preserve
we visited the balanced rock and the amphitheater along cholla mountain loop
i got distracted by brown's mountain, so we decided to hit that peak next
by the time we got back near cholla mountain, we were running into game time
returned the way we came after a visit to cathedral rock
beautiful day for a hike
lots of mountain bikers out, not as many hikers
we'll have to come back for cholla mountain sometime and explore some of the other trails
excellent linkage
thanks lp :)

1st trip
My first time hiking in this area. Nice smooth trails. Outstanding desert flora and fauna.
We got started hiking soon after the gate opened to cool dry air for a change.
Flushed a white tail buck along the Axle Grease trail. Then we saw a group of Harris Hawks sitting in a dead tree, which was very cool.
We hiked up Cone Mountain off trail and ran across a desert tortoise on the descent. To top it off, Kelly spotted a Gila Monster along the Latigo trail on the return. Fun hike. Thanks Kelly. :)

wanted some mileage without much elevation gain, since my right knee has been bothering me a bit this week
hadn't hiked from the new dynamite and pima trailhead yet, so thought this would work
john signed on last minute
we were early for the gate opening at 0541 and got going soon after
axle grease to hackamore to cone mountain trail
john wanted to hit a peak while in the neighborhood, and he led an off trail route up cone mountain, which was a new summit for me
i've been up most of the other north preserve peaks
returned via upper ranch, rustler and latigo trails
double digits but less than a thousand feet of gain
knee was fine
three new trails for me and nice to go from a new area
the best parts of the hike included cool temps, large healthy saguaros and ocotillos, and quite a few critters: harris hawks, a buck, a desert tortoise and a gila monster :)
thanks for coming along, john - fun morning

*just looked at an old triplog
guess i've been up here before :-k
