After going over a week without getting a hike in, recent rains, a new pair of shoes to rotate in, and knowing I'd have a late start, I racked my brain for something appropriate to get a feel for how the new footwear would fare. Settled on heading out Lost Goldmine - with various options in mind. Having very recently done chuparosa and wedding cake, I didn't want to revisit those treads...I had no interest in revisiting wave cave...but with the recent rains, I figured the Carney Springs Falls should be flowing. I wasn't sure of the total mileage, but I had a feeling I might be pushing sunset on the return to the trailhead.

I arrived to a mostly full parking lot with several people coming back to their cars after a morning hike. After gathering my things, I was off. The trail was damp in spots and slightly soft underfoot in others. The air was definitely humid with all the moisture in the ground. Wanting to see how the the shoes would do on off-camber slabby rock, I opted to head up towards wedding cake, before re-joining the main trail as it began to wind around the base of Turk's Head. The soundtrack for the hike was a duet of birdsong with a countertempo from the plentitude of grasshoppers.

As I came around to the Carney Spring canyon, I could hear people shouting (presumably headed up to or at Wave Cave). Did a quick time check at the junction with the Carney Springs Trail and decided to go for it. Worst case, I'd be following the last bit of the extremely well established lost goldmine trail after the sun sank below the horizon if I slowed my pace too much. The trail up to the waterfall was in good shape - as I passed Shaka Cave, I heard more yelling up canyon... turns out there was a family with small children up the trail and the kids were intent on making their presence well known to anyone within earshot. Made it to the waterfall to find a couple pairs of folk enjoying the area. I took a few minutes to snap a few photos before turning around to make my way back towards the trailhead. The new shoes were surprisingly springy compared to the pair I just retired, and I can tell I'm going to need to mess with the lacing to make sure my mid-foot stays secure. I made it back to my car just before the sun dropped below the tops of the distant hills.

Wildlife: a couple of late-season lizards, plenty of birds, butterflies, and grasshoppers.

Other People: was slightly surprised since it was a weekday...passed several groups of folk heading back towards cloudview TH on Lost goldmine. Caught a few folk bound back towards the Carney Springs TH from wave cave on the shared section of trail, and saw 4 groups along the stretch to the Carney Springs waterfall. Also crossed paths with two mountain bikers on lost goldmine, both were heading eastbound.

With the rains having come and gone and the humidity moving out of the area, I figured I'd best get out to some of the more popular areas during the week if I wanted to have a chance to see the water flowing. After considering my options, I settled on Heiroglyphic Canyon, having been in the area several times in the last year but never daring to make my way up due to the crowds...I figured I could see the water flowing and admire the petroglyphs, hopefully with not too many people - and if there were a bunch of people, I could get some solitude by heading over to Chuparosa.

I arrived late in the morning, due to other commitments preventing an earlier start time. The lot was mostly full, but still had a decent number of parking spaces available. I quickly passed a few groups in quick succession and then had the trail mostly to myself, with a somewhat steady stream of folk heading back down. The trail itself doesn't really seem any worse for wear with the recent heavy rains - it's very wide and well trodden. Once I got close to the petroglyph area, my hopes of any semblance of solitude were dashed with people lounging in some of the pools and along the slickrock near the watercourse. I took a few photos, before continuing on up-canyon to see what I could see. I didn't get terribly far before I realized I was getting chewed on by mosquitoes, which convinced me I might enjoy myself more if I turned back around to head out the lost goldmine trail towards chuparosa canyon.

The traffic heading up the trail seemed to have slowed somewhat as I made my way back towards the lost goldmine junction. Temperatures were plenty warmin the sun, and I foolishly ignored a hot spot that had appeared on my heel. Once I headed down the lost goldmine, I didn't cross paths with anyone else for the remainder of my day until re-joining the heiroglyphic trail close to sunset (curiously there were still a few people heading up the trail).

Finding the trail to chuparosa was easier this time around, having hiked it not too long ago. Someone may have put in a reflective marker recently to help people sight it - I don't recall seeing it in the ground when I hiked the area last. When I got to the chuparosa drainage, it looked like there may have only been one other visitor to the canyon ahead of me since the heavy rains passed. I explored up the canyon wondering if I might have missed the ephemeral flow since I didn't hear any water moving. It looked like some of the pourovers and staining on the canyon walls might still be damp, but things initially weren't looking very promising. I was happy to be proven wrong - there was light flow in the canyon, but I imagine it wouldn't last for much longer. After climbing up canyon as far as I cared, I stopped for a break to enjoy the view, listen to the water babble, and eat some snacks. As I made my way back down, I contemplated hitting the wedding cake - I figured if it looked like I had the daylight to work with, I may as well fit that in so I could get photos looking up into chuparosa from the top.

As I made my way over towards wedding cake hill, my legs decided that they were going to start cramping. That was a curious feeling - I don't remember the last time that happened - it seems the exposed sun-baked trail plus humidity teamed up to have me losing electrolytes faster than I replaced them. Thankfully, things got back to normal quickly after chewing a few electrolyte tablets and popping a few electrolyte capsules for good measure. I made reasonably good time (for me) up to the top of the hill, snapped my photos, and headed back down. The use trail definitely saw some erosion from the rains, but didn't seem too terrible. I made my way back towards my car with golden light falling on the hills around me. Once I got back to the car, I discovered that the bug bites and leg cramps weren't my only novel experience on the hike - it seems I had managed to ignore the hot spot warning and hiked a quarter-sized, partially de-lidded blister onto my heel. 😱 I guess I'll remember to address hot spots quickly in the future! It was a great mid-week wander to chase down some waterfalls.

Other People: I lost count of how many shirtless dudes and people in general were hiking up (or down) the Heiroglyphics trail with just a water bottle (often of the disposable 16-24oz variety) in hand.

Wildlife: loads of butterflies and lizards, most of which did not cooperate for photographs. Was super excited to spot a desert tortoise (two actually) - in my many years of hiking and exploring the desert, I've never managed to see one until now!

Laid back Sunday morning hike in Gold Canyon from the Hieroglyphics TH. Did a loop with Gold Canyon, Cougar, Gila Monster, K and Lost Goldmine Trails. I hadn't hiked Gila Monster in 9 years already so this made it kind of new.

The views up on the south side of Superstition Mountain behind Turks Head are always nice. Very few hikers, saw only 2 and one biker early on. Lot was nearly empty when I got back, which is a big contrast from when the weather is nicer and it's packed. Seems like many people were getting back when I did, having the same idea to beat the heat. The weather actually never got too hot, so it was very pleasant all around. Saw a snake at the very end of the hike that got off the trail fast and hid under a palo verde, but I was still able to get a shot.

A hike to mark the first day of spring!

Given the water observed on some of my recent hikes, I was curious to see if Chuparosa Canyon was holding any water, and with my last experience with the Hieroglyph / Cloudview TH, I decided to make a day of it and start from the Lost Goldmine trailhead instead...would it have been easier from the Hieroglyph TH? sure, but where's the fun in that? 😉

Started somewhat early (but not before sunrise), knowing I had miles to cover and also knowing that the day would be on the warmer side. There were already over a handful of cars at the Carney Springs TH when I passed, but no one else parked at Lost Goldmine. Grabbed my gear and off I went, down the well established trail.

Lost Goldmine is fantastic to walk, with little traffic given the popularity of other nearby trails. The path rolls along the base of the superstitions with beautiful views and plenty of low desert vegetation. I enjoyed listening to plenty of different birds as I made my way towards the junction with Carney Springs.

Shortly after passing the junction, I passed a dry trough and not long after that, crossed through a gate. Not entirely sure why the gate needs to remain closed given the evidence of cattle on either side and all around, but I did as bid and ensured the gate was closed. The walking went quickly and I was soon contouring around the southern end of Turks Head.

The desert had its revenge with me for chuckling at my hiking partners this weekend when they missed the trail, as I misrecalled where my turnoff was to peel off for the slickrock approach to Wedding Cake hill. After wandering around in the drainage that I thought I was supposed to be in, I picked a heading and set off cross-country until I picked the trail back up again (I spotted where I went wrong on my way back later in the day). Initially, I had planned to leave visiting the summit of Wedding Cake hill as an option after visiting Chuparosa Canyon, but with the day heating up fast, I figured I'd be better off squeezing it in early. My efforts were eased with a constant breeze on the climb. After getting to the top of Wedding Cake and looking over at Chuparosa, I headed back down and carried on over to find the route for Chuparosa Canyon.

I made good time to the fenceline where I quickly popped over and started finding my way amongst the many cowpaths. I eventually converged with the established route and it was smooth sailing from there. The trail climbs up to a saddle before dropping into Chuparosa where it climbs the drainage on canyon right (looking up canyon). The trail climbs up past the various slickrock pourovers and continues onward - I opted to stop just past the top of the upper most pourover to enjoy the solitude, a nice breeze and the views. While sitting there, I was visited by several hummingbirds (there was a blooming chuparosa nearby), some butterflies, and a couple lizards. As for water, there were a few shallow puddles collected in slickrock pockets, but they will disappear fast with the oncoming heat.

After enjoying my lunch and grabbing some photos, I headed back down and briefly considered running up to see the petroglyphs in Hieroglyphic Canyon but the voices of numerous other hikers brought me to my senses and I turned back, retracing my steps and returning to my car via the Lost Goldmine Trail. During the day out, one trailrunner and a pair of hikers passed me going the opposite direction, I saw a few other hikers from afar...and I crossed two very confused women on the Lost Goldmine Trail not far from Turks Head where they asked me if "this is the way to Wave Cave" 😒🤦🏼‍♀️ I asked them where they parked and gave them the bad news that they were very far off from where they were supposed to be and that they should have gone straight through the barbed wire fence opening rather than turning to follow the "trail" signs.

Wildlife: Lots of desert birds including cactus wren, quail, a harris's hawk, hummingbirds, several squirrels, and a variety of lizards.

The Lost Goldmine trail is definitely a nice one to visit when looking for something less strenuous with beautiful views and less traffic. Wedding Cake and Chuparosa are also worth the detours - wedding cake for its views and Chuparosa for its lichen covered slickrock. It was a great way to spend the first day of spring, even though it was a little on the toasty side when the breeze was in hiding.

Note: Distance and AEG updated to match my watch, which I've switched to tracking in low battery mode after losing all my data once on a long hike and coming close on another...HAZ estimates the route with abbreviated GPS points at 12.3mi and 1,840ft AEG. When hiking with others, my watch is pretty closely matched with what they record.

Been trying to take advantage of the cooler days as I can and realized I needed to aim for a hike midweek with the end of week forecast calling for wind and rain. Also wanted to get out for something slightly shorter than usual to evaluate the fit of a pack before I committed to a super long day with new gear. Wound up with a very late start to the day thanks to insomnia and dithering on where to drive to since I couldn't muster the enthusiasm for a wander at any of the closer locales.

Been meaning to hit the Wedding Cake and figured maybe with a near midday start I'd be able to catch a spot at the parking lot thinking most people would have opted to hike in the morning and would be clearing out....I was wrong. Arrived to a couple other cars queued for a parking spot. Luckily, a large-ish group came off the trail relatively quickly and I was able to park after 10-15 min of waiting. I guess the lesson here is that I should either get moving earlier or if I have the daylight, to park at the Lost Goldmine TH instead.

Before heading out, I added Turks Head to my route, and figured I'd run up to see the petroglyphs if I had time - initially, I was going to hit the petroglyphs first, but the trail was overrun so I headed out Lost Goldmine towards my two targeted peaks instead. I passed a number of folk headed back towards the trailhead while I was outbound, with one guy eliciting a smile by yielding the trail and calling me "miss" -- it's nice to know that I can still garner a "miss" when some people think I'm 400

The Lost Goldmine trail is fast traveling with fantastic views of the Superstitions and lots of very happy saguaro, cholla and other low desert plants. Before long, I hit the junction (marked with rocks placed on the ground in the shape of a cross) to head towards Wedding Cake Hill. I wasn't paying attention and cruised right past the cairn and location to cross the fenceline (oops), realizing my mistake as I contoured around the far side of my target and found myself looking at Turks Head...a quick check confirmed my error, so I dashed back to climb to the summit. The route is well trodden and easily followed all the way up. Took some time to enjoy the solitude and the stunning views from the top while being buzzed by a pair of swifts. While I was on my way up, I received a suggestion from @00blackout that I check out Chuparosa Canyon - I was able to make out the use path from where I was perched and figured I might give it a go in lieu of heading up to look at the petroglyphs if I had the daylight to work with at the end of my planned hike.

After my brief break, I headed back down and over to Turks Head. The route up Turks Head is also easy to follow, though is braided in places - I was surprised to find another hiker headed down near the summit as I was on my way up. I had the top to myself, and after snapping a few photos that don't do the views justice, I headed back down and rejoined the Lost Goldmine trail.

While I had a screencap of the route for Chuparosa Canyon, I didn't have it downloaded and ran into a few snafus...eventually got to where I needed to be, but after popping over the barbed wire fence, I found myself picking a route amongst cattle paths in and around the drainage and I knew I was going to run out of daylight - so rather than continuing onward, I decided to call it a day and headed back to my car. Looks like I have a reason to return, preferably after we get a bit of rain!

Happy to say that the new pack seems to fit and carry well, though I need to figure out where to shove my phone for easy access since I can't easily reach the side pocket while the pack is on. Also realized while on the off camber slickrock sections that I had managed to forget to don my ankle brace in my haste to leave the house...glad to also realize that my days with required bracing might be coming to a close! It was a great day to be outside, and the views in this area of the superstitions are extra lovely with all the mature desert flora.

Wildlife: various birds and a variety of lizards.

13 years since I last hiked this loop. Kind of forgot how fantastic it is. Hieroglyphic canyon is just beautiful and relentlessly steep to go up. Glorious hike up the canyon. Pretty cool to be on the ridgeline again too. there is some burn damage up there. chilled on 5057 for a good while. great weather, great day, great hike

Only other time I'd been to this TH was March 15, 2020. Hiked Hieroglyphics Trail as a tester after I was recovering from Covid. Was thrilled I performed well after being down for two weeks. Got Covid right as it flooded the news 😵

Found this outing in my 16 page wish list. That could take a while. 😄 Thrilled to return to the Supes for the first time this season. Great intro back looking up at the Ridgeline.

Crowded parking lot. Sheriff on us immediately bout how we parked.Be careful. Luckily we saw very few others along the route to Lost Goldmine TH. Less AEG than shown causing the route to be almost too chill. We were still tired by the time we returned to the car.

Took an alternate route to the Wedding Cake by taking the goat path to Chuparosa. Did a short spur up the canyon then came back down and took the miner’s trail towards Ermahgerd around the ridge coming off 3915. Contoured down to the small saddle behind Wedding Cake and followed game trails over below the big notch. Took the path of least resistance up to the notch, went up top then came down the normal route to Lost Goldmine. Fun, short hike and never saw anyone after leaving Lost Goldmine!

Went out to the Peralta foothills via the Hieroglyphic TH for a Sunday hike. Made it up as I went along to try to get to 7 or 8 miles. the 2nd half of the hike I saw quite a few cattle. Some ran away and others lingered and stared as I walked by.

It was hot at first as the sun hit the horizon and then when the clouds came out things got cooler. Saw a few bikers here and there but no other hikers.

Quick six to stretch the legs. Only a few vehicles in the lot at 5:20 am. I saw 3 hikers on trail and a few bikers along the way. Cool at the start and still nice at the finish. The grass is leaning in on the narrow trail sections but easy going otherwise.

I've recorded this loop five times and have probably completed it more than ten. I suppose it was time to publish a guide for it then. :-s Hieroglyphic Spring was still slightly trickling, but funky like usual. I'd guess the families and kids that only make it this far still think it's everything is awesome. It was enjoyable ascending the canyon for once without an obscene number of cairns along the way. Perhaps people are catching on that a duck every five feet really isn't necessary (reference the Wave Cave arrows erased for more context). It also was nice to experience the Supes in mid-May with all the wildflowers and fresh leaf outs. The heat usually keeps me away, but today had substantial wildflowers. The flaming yellow and red Dudleya stalks were peaking. I reached the summit in two hours and speaking of culmination, there was an entomology orgy of flying ants, bee flies and tarantula hawks circling. The former two groups were dive bombing and getting spunky with each other, where the ants were antisocial and not crossing over to the other species. :-k I was at the West Boulder Saddle before eight, about three hours into the hike, where there was still some good shade at the pass. After this brief and final break, the stretch dash got hot. Along Goldmine was the only place I saw another person, which was south of Turks Head. She had just turned around, informing me that half her water supply was gone, and she wouldn't be finding the bygone gold mine. Definitely a better, more diverse, scenic and challenging loop than the intensive forest bath of the [ Derrick - Horton Loop ]

I’d never done this section of the lost goldmine trail, figuring that it wouldn’t be that interesting. I was pleasantly surprised, particularly after adding on an ascent of both the “Birthday Cake” and Turks Head on the western end, and Shaka Cave and Waterfall on the eastern end.

Not much traffic on the trails. I just missed seeing a gila monster, but saw the photos of it taken by a couple of hikers who were a little ahead of me on the trail.

There are fairly well cairned routes up Bday and Turks, though I didn’t find the latter until bushwhacking halfway up.

Shaka Cave was pretty cool. Looked like a couple of grinding holes at the entrance.

I need to go back to the waterfall when it’s running.

Starting to get warm out there.

This was my first time hiking with ishamod since December, and we were looking for something relatively short today because he needed to be done by mid-afternoon. The Superstition side canyons work well in these situations, and neither of us had been to Turk's Backyard (Ermahgerd Canyon), so we picked that one.

We started from Hieroglyphic Trailhead just after sunrise and followed Lost Goldmine toward Old Turk's Head. The desert is very green right now, and the wildflowers are just starting to bloom. I'd only approached Old Turk's Head from the east side previously, which has no trail and gets brushy in places, so it was a surprise to find a well-worn use trail all the way up from the west/southwest.

We took a short break at the top and before starting down toward Turk's Backyard. There are some steep/loose areas on the northeast side that slowed things down a little, but it flattened out pretty quickly, and we eventually picked up a cairned route leading into the canyon that seems to get quite a bit of use--there was a cleared path through the brush that made things very easy.

The canyon wasn't as deep as I expected, and it didn't take long to reach the dryfall/rappelling area. From there, we could see the ladder and caves up above us to the right, where the canyon curves to the east. On our way up to the base of the ladder, we passed a lot of rusty scraps of metal that made us wonder if this was once an old mine site. Other than missing a rung near the bottom, the ladder was in good shape and felt sturdy...it reminded me of a less sketchy, more modern version of the rickety wooden ladder in Long Canyon in Sedona...we convinced a friend to climb that one a few years ago [ youtube video ] , so with a much stronger ladder here, climbing this one was a no-brainer :).

We went up to the ledge and took a closer look in the cave...there was more to see here than in Long Canyon. This one definitely looked like the remnants of a mining operation--there was a bolt in the rock and some metal equipment and thick pieces of rope inside the cave, and the opening appeared to go back 15+ feet and narrowed into a mine shaft. I'd be interested to know was mined there...another guano cave like Crucifix Canyon?

After exploring, we climbed back down, took a short lunch break, then followed the cairns back to Turk's Head and went up. There was one other person at the top who left just before we got there, then we returned on Lost Goldmine among the crowds of people. We saw multiple groups starting up/returning on the use trail toward Old Turks Head, so it seems like that one has gained popularity recently. Back near the trailhead, a helicopter flew over a few times and hovered near Hieroglyphic Spring for a few minutes before flying away.

This was a short, easy day--and shorter than expected--some of the similar routes I'd looked at were a few miles longer, but I think their GPSs added a bunch of distance when the signal got lost in Turk's Backyard. I had to do some major cleanup in Route Editor to get my track closer to an accurate distance/AEG. Regardless, it was fun to explore another one of the Superstition side canyons and great catching up with ishamod again. The forecast for today said strong winds, but we never had more than a light breeze, and the temperature was perfect.

My initial plan as I drove down Peralta Road was to do a Robber Roost Loop from LGM TH, but plans changed and I just hiked up Carney Springs to the False Saddle.

A few vehicles in the LGM TH as I started off. There was a very nice coolness in the air as I started towards the Carney Springs junction.

I came across a couple of Wave Cavers and pointed them in the right direction and I started up the lovely Carney Springs Trail. I made it to the false saddle and took a bunch of pictures. I looked up toward the “actual” saddle and then towards Dacite Mesa and decide today was not the day for that loop.

Hiking up the steep sections was ok, but hiking down really stressed my newly repaired knee. I was really feeling it as it flattened out near the Wave Cave Expressway.

I came across a couple of lost groups along the LGM trail on the way back and gave them directions for Wave Cave.

Driving back, the usual circus was going on at the Carney Springs TH, over-flowing and along Peralta Road.

Only 4 miles, but a nice morning jaunt. My knee was sore all day afterwards, but a little ice and ibuprofen eased that.

Now that the weather has finally turned, it’s just about the official hiking season for the Supes.

With the temps still lingering in the broiler oven level, I needed a quick one with a little elevation. Turks Head is always a fun one. I have come in from the Carney side and from Hieroglyphics TH in the past, I opted for the shorter Hierglyphics route.

A good number of people were already there when I arrived about 645am. With a few exceptions, all of those hikers went up the Hieroglyphics Trail. I hung a right and started down the Lost Goldmine. I really like this trail. It's mostly flat and doesn't offer many challenges, but the scenery is hard to beat. The mountain looks so different as you move along the edge.

I made good time to the turn off towards the Turks Head trail. It's just the old road than you follow up. The trail is easy to follow these days going up. I remember the first couple times on this one, it was a route finding challenge. Lots of cliffing out the first time hiking up there. Now, the trail is worn pretty clear and the slickrock sections have decent cairns in place all the way to the top.

The weather was nice at the start, a nice but short-lived coolness at the start. The shade of the mountain made the hike up much nicer than getting baked by the sun going up. Hiking back, the heat of the day was getting to the "man, it's hot!" range.

The views from Turks Head is the draw. And, the interesting formations along the way up. The balanced rock near the bottom of the peak is always a stop I make. And, the window/arch at the very top is also a cool geological experience.

I will be happy when the weather turns and I would also love to see some RAIN out here.

This morning's plan was to hike something easier in the Supes than this loop. I hadn't hiked for about a week, recovering from a debilitating :sk: Strep throat infection and also had to work some. :( On the early drive east, one of the US60 road signs was displaying AZ88 closed - rocks on the road. (perhaps it displays that always). I suppose we're not doing any hikes from the Canyon Lake area. As sunrise broke, one could see that the NW Supes were getting some action, lots of lightning and rain. I settled on the Hieroglyphic TH because I had my car. We chose CCW because the lightning was very active up on the ridgeline. Usually I'd complete this great hike at a brisker pace, but Dese and I had to shelter three times total, as each wave of rain rolled through with the accompanying and uncomfortably close lightning strikes. The final wave soaked us to the bone, but the sun emerged quickly afterwards. We dried out nearing the 5057 summit. It would of been nice to relax longer there, but swarming termite orgies just aren't my thing. On the descent, a large Coatimundi band crossed in front of us. There were at least three, small young ones (so cute) in the group and they all bristled orange. I've never been able to get a good pic of Coatimundi. Another large adult and one baby crossed behind us after we passed. They look like little monkeys easily scrambling the Supes' rocky terrain. This was a tough hike for Dese, but she powered through. She'll get a good rest this weekend because she isn't allowed to hike in the Grand.

It was a great day to hit Superstition. I started at Carney (wave cave) trail and went counter clockwise. I did a side excursion and to the three sisters and the 5057 summit. It was nice seeing a fair amount of people up there tackling the harder stuff. There was a fair amount of water. I wish I had brought my water filter, because I did run out. It was toward the end, so not a big deal.

Glyphs n Snags
Chilly to start. At the waterfall, we bought two tickets to the easy lure of canyon travel. I know the route is creekside upper-right. Back on track is remarkable off-trail trail maintenance including a slot tunnel through Jojoba. The ascent is butter.

Ridgeline to Sisters
Enjoyed a long lunch at the rock cathedral. En route, we crossed paths with @Pickles, exchanged smiles, and the secret RS passphrase.

Over to West Boulder
Fun chatting with a fit grandpa having a field day. Heading out of the origin of Boulder Creek we managed to hike in a circle due to a cairned shortcut. Then hiked a slightly lower route than desired.

Large pools of water down in West Boulder Creek out towards Willow Spring. The yellow daycite tide rolled in surfing ankle busters down to Carney.

Cave Explorers - Ground Zero
Apps, arrows, flags, and runway lights will never help. Folks in new or uneasy circumstances get chatty. Bring a lawn chair, direct traffic, and socialize to your heart's desire.

A classic 3:30 p.m. "Good morning!". You put out a vibe to 30 million chicks, something is going to happen.

Chaka Khan
The route to Shaka Cave is pretty spectacular in the afternoon light on the saguaros and the cliff walls.

1,000 Crursed Ravines
Along Lost Goldmine Trail is semi-pleasant in the afternoon shade of Turk's Head. The desert scenery, saguaro's and all is prime now all greened up. The ankle busters and washboard ravines fade out to the largest ravine crossed up to Hieroglyphic Trailhead.

We started around 8am with just a few other cars in the lot. It was chilly, but we were in the sun to start. After the small waterfall and Petroglyphs, we made the mistake of of staying in the drainage and boulder hopping. The actual use trail is just east of here. That made for some slow going.

Once we made the turn to the NE in the canyon, we found the very well defined trail and it was a simple (yet very steep) route to the top.

At the divide trail, the climbing was not yet over. We made our way past 5057 (been there, done that) and off to lunch with the 3 sisters. At we approached the end, there was a young lady that was just packing up and leaving. Much to our surprise in was HAZ's @Pickles ! Good to finally meet you.... We chatted for awhile and then she went on her way back down. [ youtube video ]

From here the Ridgeline Trail steeply descends to the West Boulder Saddle. Next up (actually down), my least favorite trail in the Supes. We made a stop at Shaka Cave, since neither of us had been there before. It was actually nicer than expected.

Back on the main trail, headed to the Lost Goldmine Trail, we started getting questions from the afternoon crowds going to the Wave Cave.

We were both tired and just wanted the hike to be over, but we still had to traverse over to our starting point. The Lost Goldmine trail drags on, but it was made a bit more tolerable by all the greenery and reaching the TH as the sun was setting in the golden hour.
