I was in the mood for some actual trail miles at cooler elevations and the magic 8-ball determined this would be the answer.

We left a car with the General and Cletus'd our way a few miles down the rim road. The southern 3 miles of HouBros had quite a bit of deadfall that is in need of a chainsaw. And not the little 18-incher you can buy at home depot either. The rest of the loop was in fine shape. We passed 4 sets of other hikers on the day, all of which appeared to be backpacking, though only one group was actually set up for the night with tents near Pinchot Cabin.

Plenty of water most of the way in Houston Draw, some at the Bear Canyon Crossing, and intermittent pools all along Fred Haught. Lots of nice green grass making mid-June look lush up here.

We started from Houston Brothers trailhead after a short setup shuttle from General Springs. Continued down trail passed McFarland Spring and then to Aspen Spring/cabin site for the first break. Ran into several hikers along the way and two at Aspen. After the break it was on to Pinchot Cabin and there was a family camped at the site where we took another short break.

Then followed the trail passed the 95 road wash out and onto the Fred Haught Trail. The trail continues into the Quien Sabe Draw which for some reason is my favorite part of the FHT. Probably the nice Pondo stands and ferns despite there being no water in the section.

Intersected with the AZT and then we followed that up canyon back to General Springs passed some decent pools which are usually there this time of year. Easy stroll back to the vehcle at General Springs.

Went to experience some cool weather and see some fall colors. It was mostly pines, with sporadic clusters of fall colors (maples), mainly down in the drainages, with some leaves still green, but most others orange / red and falling or already bare. We went well off the trail a few times to experience the denser clusters of fall colors. A lot of up and down throughout the trail, in and out of the drainages, with the inclines a little longer and steeper than expected, which kept it interesting. Beautiful weather (50s-60s and sunny). No other people all day, until we were near the trailhead on our return, when we met 2 people with 2 dogs. There were 900 squirrels running all over the trail and numerous birds, including 2 hawks, which made an impressive echoing sound with their wings as they began flying away. The fall colors were less impressive than previous years, but it was a beautiful and peaceful area overall.

Day 3 of 3 cabin loop: starting near buck springs, at start of barbershop trail/Terminus of u bar trail, going to Houston brothers, to general crook, ending at general springs.

We enjoyed being in some fall colors. Some on barbershop, but lots and lots on Houston brothers.

No water at Coyote springs, but at Bill McClintock draw just past Coyote springs there were pools of water and a very nice campsite.

After climbing out of the draw, the trail goes onto old and current forest roads, or crosses them. It is sometimes confusing where the trail leaves/joins the old roads, but routescout is useful to help with that, and some things are signed with small markers.

Considerable water pools were also in Dane canyon and barbershop canyon.

We had a snack at FR300 then started back towards the car. The official route for general crook trail as part of the cabin loop is not at all accurate. Nor is the general crook route shown on the topo map. The general crook trail follows FR300 almost exactly. You are almost always in direct sight of the road, and the trail is blazed consistly on the trees with silver V markers. The route was useful to pick up the first instance of the trail from road where Houston brothers trail lets out.

A great backpacking weekend! :)

I was going to hike hike Porcupine Ridge, near Woods Canyon, but AZ-87 to Payson was closed down due to the Sand Stone Fire. I’ve hit the west end of the Rim pretty hard over the years, but was able to able to come up with this surprisingly quickly. 🙇🏻‍♂️

Descending 170 ft. in the first mile, the trail was often rooty, or rocky. Flowers were minimal. Fungi — despite the summer monsoon and overhead cover — nonexistent. But the overhead cover provided solid walking shade. Didn’t need it yet, though.

After a mile, Trail #171 breaks out into the open at the south end of the first fenced enclosure. Despite signs, the fence is no longer electrified. I checked. (And not by peeing!) Even if the fence was electrified, it could easily be walked across due to being collapsed. Not sure what it was protecting. The 1500′ x 150′ enclosure’s highlight was its tons of coneflower.

At the 1½ mile mark, there was a metal pole. McFarland Spring is 120 yds. southwest, across the creek. I could not find a spring pipe, but water was trickling from the boulders.

Back on trail, I saw five young gals hiking towards me. No, correction: Rather than in a file, they were line abreast. Turns out, they were doing a flower survey. (I think for the Forest Service.) Hey, me too! I told them what I had found so far. 😁

The trail continued to hug the treeline to the second fenced enclosure. The fence was intact, but no longer electrified. Again, no indication what the fence was protecting, other than a really nice patch of silvery lupine. (I low crawled the unbarbed fence for a closeup.) The dog-legged enclosure is 1100′ x 150′. The north end of the enclosure is the 2-mile mark.

Aspen Spring is at the 2⅓ mile mark of the trail. The spring pipe was bone dry, even in the small cave around the corner. A trickle of water seeped from the hillside. I was surprised to find a cabin, as I had not heard there was one here. There was an old stove, falling apart, outside the cabin. The gas pipe had a bullet hole, but the cabin’s collapse was not due to an explosion.

North of Aspen Spring, the draw tightens up. The trail moves up slope about 50 ft., rolling over small spurs and side creeks. I started finding many tight clusters of Nuttal’s linanthus. Just past the 3-mile mark, there were three rather fat pine trees. I didn’t measure, but they had to be 4′ diameter! I marked the pines as the “Three Kings” on the my GPS route. 👑

Pinchot Springs is supposedly around the 3⅓ mile mark of the trail. Despite five minutes of searching, I couldn’t even find a trickle. Good thing I carry plenty of liquids.

The trail reached Pinchot Cabin at the 3¾ mile mark. Unlike Buck Springs Cabin, which was locked, Pinchot Cabin’s door was nailed shut. It’s too bad Coconino National Forest doesn’t rent the cabins out, like the C&O Canal does some of their old lockhouses. 😉👈

After enjoying eating lunch, I headed back across the creek, and started up decommissioned FR 95B. I jumped when a nearby dog barked. (The leashed dog, and its owner, were on the opposite side of a tree.) FR 95B was short, but steep. At the top, there was log-fenced pullout / trailhead on FR 139A. Disregarding 13 minutes of breaks, I made the 3¾ mile trip back to where I started in 1h 09m — an average speed of 3.27 mph.

After New Mexico we headed to Payson Arizona. We opted to do the Houston Brother Trail to Barbershop Trail and then Barbershop Canyon. Great time to hike in Payson, a few days before the 4th of July. I have never seen this place so empty. On the drive to the Houston Brother Trail only saw 1 car and there were maybe 3 people camping along the way. No one on the trails. Everything was really green. Saw one very large tree that exploded from a lightning strike. Probably occurred during the storm the night before. The pine scent was still in the air and the tree parts dripping with sap. Must of been something to see. Barbershop Creek was running but not enough to make it difficult to cross. Ferns were really thick along the creek. I have done this hike along Barbershop Creek before but it never gets old.

It was looking like we were officially going into "oh crap it's hot" territory for the next few weeks/months so decided to get in a trip on the rim while it still wasn't too bad. Was just looking for a simple relaxing hike so I decided to head up to Rock Crossing after work on Friday and then do the Eastern Cabin loop.

Hadn't been to 18c before, so I took that down and explored a little bit to the East.. Didn't go too far as I had gotten there around 4 and it was pretty thick. Ended up camping at the spot above where it crosses to 18b. Not a bad site and easy access to the water where I did a little fishing; meant to bring my normal reel/rod but only had my tenkara which wasn't the best for this spot. Did manage to get 2 little guys but that was it which was sad since I could see them jumping all over the place but just couldn't reach them.
The night got all the way down to 40 which was fantastic. The next morning I woke up and as I was having coffee, was serenaded by a boat blasting music. Ah, the joys of nature. I stayed at camp a little longer than intended so instead of hiking from there and doing the loop and returning to the car, I figured I'd shave 4 miles off by hiking to my car and and then starting from barbershop. Did that, hiked clockwise (happy I did that to get the hilly part out of the way before it got too hot) and ended at Merritt draw. I saw a very high number families headed to Dane; that place must have been insanely busy! It didn't get quite as cool that night as the first but was still pleasant. Hiked out the next morning quickly as, after climbing out of Merritt, it's a pretty nice and flat jaunt along U-Bar and Houston. Got done early enough that it was around 11 when I rolled through Camp Verde where I've been slowly picking away at all the little restaurants there. Ended up at Verde Brewing which is in this weird little industrial area. Not a huge menu but the beer was cold and decent and the food was okay. Probably not somewhere I'd go again unless I'm craving some nachos, but not a bad place by any stretch.
Note, there are a few spots on the 2 mile spur to rock crossing that I'm not sure a normal sedan would be a good idea but it's only in certain spots so you might still be able to get away with it.

We set out on a modified ccw west cabin loop that cut off a couple of miles by dropping into Bear Canyon for some offtrail things before climbing up and over into HouBros to complete the rest of it on trail.

I was surprised to find bear cyn to be dry, but that changed as we moved downstream. It was all water after the west junction, and flowing nicely after east joined in.

HouBros has seen some recent chainsaw clearing, and the winter snows put an extra nail in the coffin for the longevity of the barn at Aspen Spring. Good water flowing all along the draw with Pinchot truly gushing. But Aspen was chilly, with temps down well over 20 degrees from up above.

They're thinning along the ridge along the north end of FH, so it'll be interesting to see how that looks when they're done. The 95 washout has probably eroded a little bit more after the enhanced spring runoff this year. Curious if they'll ever fix it. Encountered a handful of others along the way, but generally a pleasant day in the woods.

Kudos to Kathy, who fought through the day far more than 17 miles on a surgically repaired knee!

Kathy and I joined 9L and Chumley for West Cabin Loop. My longest hike so far after knee surgery so it was a good test. Didn't have any issues so that was good. Starting off we hiked near FR 300 through the forest over to the drop in for Bear Canyon. Then down Bear Canyon on some off trail with some decent pools along the way.

Eventually we exited the canyon and onto Houston Bros trail. Nice stretch of trail and we had lunch at Aspen Cabin and spring. Took a long break before continuing down trail to Pinchot Cabin.

After Pinchot we hiked through the washed out section of FR 95 which was interesting. What will be more interesting is if they ever fix it....it's a huge washout and looks like a ton of work. Leaving FR 95 we hopped on the Fred Haught trail briefly and then the AZT back to General Springs and our vehicle at FR 300.

Two nights and three days on the Cabin Loop with Philip and Steven. Drove up from Tucson Friday morning and parked at General Springs Cabin. Took the AZT north to do the Loop clockwise, and I immediately felt sad.

I had originally wanted to backpack in the Chiricahuas that weekend but thunderstorms were cropping up and between lightning and flooding potential the Chiricahuas seemed a bit dicey. The Rim wasn’t forecast to be wet, so we decided to head north instead. But I’d been longing for something wild and rugged, and while the AZT segment is gorgeous I just wasn’t feeling it. No catclaw overgrowth, deadfall, steep scree slopes, or washed out burned trail to contend with, so no type 2 fun. :(

Took the spur trail to Fred Haught, then continued to Pinchot. The trails are easy, well marked, and immaculate. Finally got a little drama at the old road that was washed out just before Pinchot, necessitating a steep bypass down through the drainage and back up the other side.

Stayed overnight at Pinchot Cabin. In the morning we continued on U-Bar, which is not as well signed and cross-crossed by many logging roads and is itself a logging road at times. On two or three occasions I had to check my GPS to confirm we were on the right trail.

By this time I had gotten over any feelings of disappointment and was free to just enjoy the beauty all around. U-Bar had more varied terrain that kept getting better the further along we went. Had lunch at Dane Spring, which was flowing nicely. Continued on Barbershop, which is even more beautiful. Barbershop was easy to follow, though not as well marked.

We made it to Houston Brothers and were getting tired, so we made camp on a ridge. Probably wasn’t the best spot but it worked. I was worried about noise from camping close to roads and other dispersed car campers, but I didn’t need to be concerned about people. It was the elk who were partying all night with their incessant bugling.

Sunday morning we packed up and continued down Houston Brothers to the Rim Road, aka General Crook trail. Route Scout showed a track more or less parallel to the road and claimed that was General Crook; we just took the road to get the great views off the Rim. Once the road pulled away and was just a road, we peeled off to find the “trail” identified as General Crook.

There was no trail. We were really close to the car and I needed a solid dose of type 2 fun, so we proceeded to follow the track on Route Scout anyway. It led us down and up steep ravines, then down a drainage with lots of debris before dumping us out in the swampy field behind General Springs Cabin. Perfect!

On the way home we stopped at Pie Bar in Strawberry. We were expecting pizza and beer, or maybe strawberry pie, so we were surprised to find that they serve empenadas. Really good ones, too.

While the Cabin Loop was definitely smoother and more manicured than what I was originally hoping for, it is absolutely gorgeous and a delight to do.

Originally was gonna go camping but was too lazy, so I headed up to Washington Park to run a cabin loop with some friends. Probably have done this one at least a half dozen times, but it's always worth another go. Started at around 8:30 am hoping to get done before the storms hit, but wasn't confident in that.

I always like to get the Rim Rd section over with first; luckily with the recent rain it wasn't too dusty. Tried to follow the Gen Crook trail tread a couple of times, but it's spotty.

Everything is nice and green now, some of the small drainages on Houston Bros had water, but surprisingly there wasn't any more water at Aspen Spring or Pinchot Cabin than there was a month or so ago. Started hearing thunder at Bear Canyon or so, but the storms seemed to be moving in a favorable direction, and we managed to avoid them. Didn't get any rain until after we left the trailhead.

Up at 5:00am on a Saturday morning, asking myself why the hell I'm I not asleep! Got ready and met up with a couple of my hiking peeps to drive up to the rim to hike Houston Brothers. Now the initial directions for this group hike said to meet at the Northern TH, so we made our drive down 95, with a 10 minute delay about a mile in. Ambulance blocking the road loading someone in with a SxS pulled off to the side, not sure what happened there. Continued down 95 and parked at TH parking, there was a white Jeep already there. Waited a good 30 minutes and no one else showed. Turns out they are all waiting off the 300 TH so down we went. I would have much rather have hiked starting at the top portion, as I forgot how up and down this section is. Trail is in great shape with tons of wild flowers, butterfly's and horsefly's in the many sections of wash. Had lunch at the Barbershop intersection and that's when we heard the first boom of thunder of the day. With that and the dark clouds coming in, we started back, beating the storm back out. Temps were good, was definitely humid especially once that storm rolled in but always good to get out for an adventure.

Creative juices ran dry after last week, needed some miles on the legs, so decided to go with something close(ish) and familiar. I've done this loop about a billion times now (three, to be exact), it's always worth coming back to. Saw ~3 backpackers, two runners, and a couple of UTVs on the Dick Hart ridge.

Threatened to rain for the last ~6 miles, but it never really materialized. No energy the last few miles, so lots of walking at the end there.

Started near 218&300 intersection on Friday 5PM, riding all the way to McFarland spring campsite. Very quiet night and morning. Biked on down towards Pinchot and passed some campers at Aspen spring. Rode out 139A towards the lake and explored some. Then headed back to Pinchot for more water and up 139G to 139 back to 300. Lost my sandals along here somewhere, must have bounced loose from my seat pack. Very dusty heading back on the rim road. Got a few welcomed sprinkles on the way back.

Tom and I decided to do another backpack after only a 3 week break from our last one to keep up our conditioning. The cabin loop on the rim was appealing because of the cool temperatures and our desire to return to the rim for more hiking; it had been over 10 years for each of us. I always had the desire to do the loop as a backpack ever since GPSJoe and Grasshopper introduced me to it.

Planning the trip was a little confusing since different sources gave very different results for elevation gains for the same distance and direction of travel. We decided to hike counter-clockwise from Pinchot Trailhead and deal with whatever the gains were.

Day 1: Fred Haught Trail from trailhead to General Crook Cabin. 7.12 miles and 1,247’ aeg. A great hike along a shaded trail with streams full of water and numerous campsites. We camped in the vicinity of the cabin on a very windy night. A few AZT northbounders passed by the cabin while we were there. Morning temperatures were about 30 degrees.

Day 2: FR300 (Rim Road), Houston Brothers Trail and Barbershop Trail to Coyote Spring. We couldn’t locate the track north of Rim Road so opted for a road walk which turned out better in my view. The forest north of the road had a lot of dead trees. The road walk offered great viewpoints and a gradual 4.5 mile uphill climb. The short segment of the Houston Brothers trail had a lot of blowdowns to navigate. The Barbershop Trail also had a lot of blowdowns and three canyon crossings. 10.96 miles and 2,075’ aeg. We camped near Coyote Spring which had plenty of water. The morning temperature was about 30 degrees.

Day 3: UBar trail to Pinchot TH. This was a really nice hike with gradual ups and downs until the Dane Canyon crossing. It was mostly shaded and there was plenty of water in the springs and crossings, There were fewer blowdowns until about a mile from the end where numerous trees were down in the same area. We met a party of 3 backpackers doing the loop in the opposite direction at the blowdowns. We had planned on spending the night near Pinchot Cabin and day hike on Saturday, but opted to call it a trip and head back to Phoenix. We were both tired and I was catching a cold plus I didn’t sleep well both nights. We also hadn’t spent much time planning for the day hike.

It was a great trip and we plan to return to the area, car camp and hike many of the other hikes described in guides on this website. HAZ puts some iPhone apps to shame.

the east cabin loop has been on my radar for a few years
along with @tibber, mary jo and wade, did parts of barbershop, u-bar and houston brothers five years ago
john agreed to hike it with me, and suggested driving up saturday afternoon to car camp
early dinner at the thai restaurant in payson, then took fr 95 to where fr 139 crosses u-bar trail
found a very nice campsite nearby and had an hour or so to enjoy being in the pines
started hiking around 0630 on u-bar, going counterclockwise on the loop
checked out pinchot cabin, then the area around aspen spring
continued on houston brothers trail
somewhere close to the barbershop turnoff, john flushed a mama turkey and several little turkeys from a drainage where they were getting a drink
i had never seen a group of little ones before, pretty cool
took a left on barbershop, then a left on u-bar four miles later
u-bar was my favorite of the day, just a nice stroll through the forest for several miles, with a stop at dane spring and cabin before the drop/ascent at dane canyon and barbershop canyon
finished up and had a smooth drive home with another stop for thai food - love that place
it was nice to see how everything fit together and complete the loop
water in several places if needed
we saw several elk, including two young ones
quite a few downs and ups at canyons and drainages
miles of relatively flat, pine needle covered trail too
a nice getaway with good company
thanks, john!

Kelly invited me to do the east cabin loop. With the soaring temps in the valley, it sounded wonderful. We decided to go up Saturday evening and car camp in the cool pines.
We got started at 0630 which is about as early as we can get going while camping. Temp was about 50 degrees. Felt great. The trails are in very good shape. A fair amount of deadfall on Houston Brothers, easy to get around. Barbershop has a lot of ups and downs unlike the other trails which have some long flatter sections.
We startled a turkey and her poults, which could barely fly. We also flushed up two elk cows and their calves.
First time doing the east loop. Good times. Thanks Kelly. :)

Backpacked the East Cabin Loop (Barbershop/U-Bar/Houston Bros) over the weekend, starting at the intersection of FS139 and the Barbershop Trail and taking the loop counter-clockwise. Total distance for the loop was 16-17 miles and we did it in a leisurely 3 days/2 nights. Camped at Dane Spring on Friday night and at Aspen Spring on Saturday. There was plenty of water at Dane Spring with a steady flow coming out of the pipe. Aspen Spring was also flowing fine, but the shallow water level of the stream meant you needed to go down stream a little (to just beyond Aspen Cabin) to collect out of one of the larger pools. Around the loop, there was water at Barbershop Spring, Dane Spring, Barbershop Canyon Stream, Pinchot Spring, Aspen Spring, McFarland Spring (low flow), and Houston Draw Head.

While temps were 100+ in the Valley, the Cabin Loop remained hospitable throughout the weekend. High temperatures were around 80 all 3 days, making it warm in the sun, but since the loop is 80% in the shade, it wasn't a big deal. Overnight lows were in the low 50's. Overall, the loop was wonderful and not terribly crowded. We only saw 3 other people on Friday (at Dane Spring) and zero on Sunday. As you might expect, Saturday was the busiest where we crossed paths with a dozen or so people, but it still wasn't bad. We had one other camper at Dane Springs on Friday night and one other group of 5 at Aspen Spring on Saturday night.

A moderate flow out of the spring, but it's difficult to collect near the source since the stream's only about 1 inch deep. Downstream a little from the Aspen Cabin was a pool big enough to fill a collapsable bucket (although it was a bit cloudy).

Hard to say what the flow rate was, but there were a few large pools to filter from and a nice campsite (or 2) nearby.
