Andy agreed to drive for this one because we weren’t sure of the condition of FR25, which turns out isn’t bad at all. Despite that, we opted to not drive in all the way to the Mormon Grove TH and instead park at a pullout camping area just past the junction with FR25A and get the climb up the road to Mormon Grove out of the way first thing.

One the way up FR25, we spotted one or two prospects. One had a faint trail that led partway to it and faded away quickly at a smaller prospect. The overgrowth made it hard to make anything out, which was just a filled in hole anyway. Also spotted a leftover leg from what looks like it might have been a half eaten rabbit, so it looks like signs of a mountain lion possibly.
From Mormon Grove TH we headed north on Saddle Mt Trail. At the junction with the Sheep Creek Trail, we made the unfortunate decision to try to check out the lasso loop trail to the Story Mine. The leader trail is in good shape, but once you’re on the lasso part, the trail is severely overgrown. It starts out with mostly manzanita, then the catclaw starts to pop up. Andy and Wally decided to bail once the catclaw appeared and headed straight up over the hill to the Story Mine. They said they found the mine and it wasn’t much to see. I stayed on the “trail” and fought my way through to where some maintenance was done and it became a highway again, which was maybe 0.2 of a mile. I have a track from 15 years ago when I hiked this area, and I hiked part of this but not what I did this day. At where the maintained part of the loop is, there is another road or trail that heads down the hill, I think to other mines. I remember that I could see it in the hill while on the loop, but it also looked pretty overgrown once I was next to it. I have no memory at all of hiking this 15 years ago, despite having the proof the GPS track on my computer.

After the Story Mine excursion, we continued north taking Sheep Creek, Thicket Spring and West Fork over to FR25A and then back to the car. From Thicket Spring to West Fork, I missed the turn because I turned too soon on what seemed to be an old alignment of the trail. It was a little overgrown, but not nearly as bad as the Story Mine trail. I was on the East Fork Trail soon enough and on my way.

The hike down FR25A seemed to be nicest part of the hike. It mainly follows a wash, so it was like hiking a normal trail even though it’s a very rough road. The trees had fall colors, and some parts were like slot canyons. There were also signs from the active mining days and some interesting mine shafts to explore. We saw one side by side that headed up a really steep road that branched off of 25A and a Jeep further down that was left idling while the owners walked their dog through the wash. On the last descent to FR25 I spotted a doe in the wash below and managed to get some good pictures.

Had a go at Saddle Mountain from the Cross F Trailhead earlier in the year and returned for a shorter version of the loop starting at Peeley TH. Sort of a Cornucopia - Thicket Spring and Saddle Mountain Mine Tour Loops combo. Rested my hopes on the sycamores along 25A, and they ended up in the neighborhood of prime. Overall there was more fall color than expected. Got going not long after sunrise and went counterclockwise.

Cornucopia through Thicket Spring not too much fall color. Most of the oaks had dropped their leaves, but in McFarland Canyon near the Sheep Creek jct there was some yellow below the pines. Ascended Sheep Creek to Saddle Mountain Trail, which is my favorite of the bunch. It provides some of the best views of Pine Butte and the Peeley - Sheep ridgeline, and this time around I was surprised by the couple pockets of maples shining bright red.

Left the trail when it seemed the route up the ridge was clear enough. There are just about no good lines through the brush up Saddle Mountain for any sustained lengths. It's one of the rougher bushwhacks, or the roughest, compared to the other summits in that part of the Mazzies, but it is a short one. I think it's overall easier than North Peak, for instance, even if the going is slower. Great views all around but the pano is probably better from the tougher, shorter, southern summit.

Breaked in Potato Patch before setting off again down 91. Saw the only person of the day before heading down to the Sunflower Mine area, a lone backpacker who I thought might be hiking the AZT until I saw him when I was driving out around the 87/Ord turn off. The Mining road that connects 91 to 25A was maintained some this winter but is already in need of some more clearing. It is easy to follow, however.

Along the 25A to Cornucopia under the yellow sycamores. Water flowing down the whole way. No idea how or why anyone drives to the end. Up Cornucopia the leaves dulled as I climbed. Made it back to the TH and it was still empty.

What to hike while en route from Tucson to Flagstaff? The mercury mines! Hard to believe it had been 10 years since my last visit. Parked at the FR 25/FR 25A junction and set off on foot around 5pm. I overtook some hunters in an ATV on the hike in, otherwise had the place to myself. West Fork Sycamore Creek was flowing nicely. Nice to see this area looking pretty good after the 2012 wildfire. Hiked past the Junk Mine, now free of plywood and debris, to the overlook of the Sunflower Mill. Happy to see the old rotary furnace tube still there. I recalled a lifetime of visits to this unique place, and hiking up to photograph the mill back in 1998 (so glad to have those photos now). Went a bit further up canyon to the Sunflower Mine to look for some cinnabar samples and check out the old mine tunnels (now sealed). Headed back down the canyon after sunset, pausing to wash the cinnabar dirt off my hands in the creek bed. Concluded my journey with a deserted Lake Mary highway drive, surrounded by a blanket of moonlit snow.
An evening of nostalgia had me feeling great, recalling similar adventures in my younger years.

Was going to start from Mormon Grove, but I'd never done Little Saddle Mountain, and it didn't seem like it'd be too much to start from the Cross F TH.

LSM Trail is burned nearly the whole way to SM Trail. Trail is typical of AZT tread and in great shape. Views open up from Saddle Mountain Trail. Took that to Potato Patch and worked my way to about half way up.

Too many unknowns for the rest of the hike and was feeling tired. Significant bushwhack to get as far as I did, seemingly more of the same to gain the summit. Nothing too crazy. Going to head back in a week or two and try again from Peeley TH.

Down to Sheep Creek with a bushwhack around Story Mine. Not worth the effort. Lots of catclaw and manzanita and little reward. Down to McFarland Canyon where some pines were spared. Nice spot down there with an open mine adit right at the jct.

Thicket Spring and West Fork up, over, and down to Cornucopia. Then roads to 25a past Cornucopia Mine, National Mine, and Sunflower Mine. Took an old two track from the Sunflower processing area where nothing remains. It has been recently maintained since the snow melt and makes for good looping options.

Loop hike with Kyle & Claire. We headed for the Peeley Trailhead and saw Hank and the rest of the HAZ crew who were remembering GPS Joe. We also saw FOTG and the dogs. We took our lunch and then returned to our trailhead passing the Sunflower Mine. Along the creek we saw a large pack of Coatimundi.

I had a great time on this trip- there are so many good things to say about this. It was my first proper hike in the Mazatzals and I came away with a good appreciation for this area. Kyle put this loop together and it defiently showcases a spectrum of the wilderness along with varying degrees of trail types and conditions.

Starting off, we set a good pace on the saddle mountain trail which winds along the side of the mountains. The trail is open and wide. One one side of the trail the rugged mountains rise up and the other side the earth drops off into views of rolling hills and wilderness for miles. Not too shabby. Eventually the trail drops us down into McFarland Canyon. We stopped for a break in a nice little clearing and continued following the canyon upstream for a bit. Kyle and 9L spotted an Eagle along this portion. Eventually the trail leaves McFarland Canyon via a small side canyon. The trail narrows and goes uphill for this portion. The foliage along the trail was very dense and we had to pay attention to stay on the trail. Once we got to the high point the trail was very good and easy to follow for miles. We breezed onto the Mazatzal Divide trail and ran into the group of Haz'ers from the GPS Joe Tribute. Good timing to run into everyone :) 9L and Kyle chatted for a few minutes with Larry and others. Then we continued toward the Peely TH and they went the opposite way. We paused for a few minutes at Peely TH to relax and eat our lunch before hopping back on the Mazatzal Divide trail that would bring us to the juncture for our loop.

At the juncture we left the Mazatzal Divide trail and followed the Cornucopia Trail. These trails were both very wide and easy to follow. We stopped and saw the remains of what was once a blue delivery truck and not too long after we saw some very cute and scared coatimundi who ran away and would not let us stop to take pics of them. We had more beautiful views and fall colors through this portion of the hike as we walked through another dry creekbed. Eventually the trail becomes narrow and runs parallel to the creep bed while gradually rising. This put us back on another Jeep Road just above the sunflower mine. We ran into some friendly jeepers and a dude with a large gun going for a walk to check out the mines up from the road. We continue to follow the trail upwards towards a saddle. Decent trail through this part, but there was some deadfall to navigate past. Past the saddle we ended up getting off route and had to turn back a little bit. Just some challenging routefinding fun. The rest of the way back was a bit of a blur for me. The uphill was gradual but it seemed eternal until we finally connected back onto the Saddle Mountain Trail and back to the Jeep.

This was a great day in a beautiful wilderness.~ I anticipate many future hikes in the Mazzies :D

I really like this loop. Its challenging and extremely diverse in regards to scenery, type of trail, and quality of trail. Today was a perfect day for it and we managed to catch up with some of the folks meeting at the Peeley TH this morning. That trail builder machine they put to work in there is basically magic. The Cornucopia was totally transformed since the last time I was on it. The new signs are also impressive. We saw a bald eagle in McFarland Canyon and some coatimundi along Alder Creek :D

My only bad note is that due to the fire, the lower half of the old jeep road connecting the Sunflower Mine to the Saddle Mtn trail is being swallowed up. I think that road is a hidden gem of the Mazzies and would hate to see it forgotten and disappear.

Parked at FR25 / 25A junction and hiked up FR25 to Mormon Grove TH, take Saddle Mtn trail to McFarland Canyon and continue on Thicket Spring trail to West Fork trail to Cornucopia trail and take that back to 25A and return to the 25/25A junction.

The area is recovering a bit from the Sunflower fire. The new posts installed by Shawn and team look good and will be even better when the signs are added  We saw an Arizona black buzzworm along Saddle Mtn trail.

The area seemed eerily quiet today. From the time we left the Beeline to getting back we saw no people and no vehicles anywhere in the area except on the drive back we saw one pickup. There are usually at least a few people/vehicles at all the camping spots along FR 25.

We planned our trip based on the 'Easy Mines' hike description by GPS Joe and loading what I now know was his Feb '06 GPS track, which was a bit more than the hike description of 7.6 miles and 1400 AEG. But by adding a bit of bushwhacking in an attempt to include the Story Mine to the loop hike we ended up with well over both figures... no wonder why Tracey was complaining more than the usual. [-(

Oh well, it was great weather, we saw a bunch of mines such as they were (not much) and the equipment left at Sunflower/National Mine, met one hiker and a group of ATV'ers who were having a good time with Bud Lights at the mine. Glad we passed them loading them on their trailers as we drove out FR25 so we wouldn't have to worry about passing them driving home.

I found a lucky/unlucky horseshoe on the trail... unlucky for the horse that lost it and hopefully lucky for me. We'll be hanging up to see if it brings me luck... yeah right! I don't wait for luck, I seek opportunities to capitalize on.

This was a really long day and you probably won't find me following this route again. There were a few nice areas to check out-- some good fall color show in a few locations. I encountered a bit more bushwacking than expected. It was good to see a bit of trail in the Mazzies I had not yet been on. Also saw the mine at the Saddle Mtn / Thicket intersection that I had not be aware of. I took a side trip left where Little Saddle Mtn merges onto the old jeep road (instead of staying right) to check out Upper Sheep Creek Spring. Not much to see there. Its pretty ugly getting there and there's a corral. Not really worth going to again. The trail section that connects Thicket Springs and Cornucopia on the south end is a total mess-- not fun.

Starting point: Cross F TH
Little Saddle Mountain (plus side trip down the old jeep road to Upper Sheep Creek Spring)--> Saddle Mountain --> Thicket Springs --> Cornucopia--> 25A --> jeep road above Sunflower Mine --> Saddle Mountain -->Little Saddle Mountain

I think all the trail names are correct. The signs don't seem to correspond 100% with my map.

Mazatzal Spring Break 2011

Part 1:

After a quick breakfast at the Beeline Cafe in Payson Saturday morning, I went south and met John, Jason, and Gary at the Mormon Grove trailhead. Temps were a bit warmer than expected as we headed north along the rocky Saddle Mountain Trail, our packs loaded down with choice beverages. We took a short break among the changing oaks at Potato Patch, then continued on across brushy hillsides. Lupines, penstemon, and other flowers added contrasting colors to the sea of green that is this part of the Mazatzals.

Reaching McFarland Canyon, we entered a fine forest of pine and fir, then continued west to our campsite along the creek. The rest of the day was spent relaxing in the shade and just enjoying our surroundings. John and I ventured down canyon a ways. I made a late afternoon trip up the Sheep Creek Trail to Squaw Flat to enjoy the views and watch the sunset on the Mazatzal peaks. The only others we saw the entire weekend came passing by on Saturday evening: two guys with four mules. We shared our campsite with them, but kept to ourselves. Jason, John, and Gary cooked steaks on the fire, and I did my usual quesadillas.

I awoke Sunday morning from a miserable night's sleep with an aching back to find the sun turning my tent into an oven. The mule train soon left, and the rest of us spent the day in the shade being lazy among the tall pines.

Late Sunday afternoon, John and I climbed out of the canyon and hiked over to the Story Mine. Wanting to see the old cabin and apple trees that Fritzski had written about, we continued down the old road to the bottom of the canyon, getting torn apart by all manner of unforgiving plants along the way. The bottom of the canyon was a welcoming scene of huge douglas firs, a few maple and apple trees, and an ancient cabin, with water trickling down the creek bed. Being late, we cut our visit short, hiked back out, and returned to our campsite by sunset. Jason was serving up the very flavorful tortellini he had cooked, which was enjoyed by all. The rest of the night was spent around the fire, discussing many subjects, and watching the stars.

Monday morning we packed up our gear and parted ways. John, Jason, and Gary headed back the way we had come in on the Saddle Mountain Trail. I had Tuesday off, and decided to take the long way back...

Part 2:

Wishing I had gotten an earlier start due to the very warm sun, I went east up the Thicket Spring Trail, then turned off onto the West Fork Trail, whose scrub oak gauntlet I endured while dropping down to the Cornucopia Trail. There I hung my food from a tall oak and stashed my backpack. I threw on my daypack, and headed north along the Cornucopia Trail. Cornucopia creek was flowing nicely, and spring was in full gear.

I nearly stepped on a gopher snake shortly before reaching the big ponderosa below Thicket Spring, where I took a break in the shade. I filtered some water, ate lunch, soaked my hat and shirt in the creek, then continued hiking up to the Mazatzal Divide Trail.

A welcome breeze picked up as I climbed the east side of Mount Peeley, where I stashed some water for the return trip. I left the Mazatzal Divide Trail at Peeley's northeast corner, and followed the northeast ridge to the summit of Mount Peeley. Clouds had begun to roll in, and the wind was strong. I sat down among the rocks to enjoy the view and send a photo to some friends. Before leaving I placed a register on the summit (I'm not sure why there has never been one here on my previous visits). I took the standard northwest ridge back down to the Mazatzal Divide Trail, then headed back the way I had come. The cloud cover and breeze made a world of difference hiking south along the Cornucopia Trail.

Back at the West Fork junction, I retrieved my backpack, and continued down along Forest Road 25A, passing the turnoff for the absolutley insane Forest "Road" 3722 (the "Cornucopia via E. Fork Sycamore" hike). I hadn't been on this section of the West Fork Sycamore Creek since 1999, and I was impressed with its beauty. The canyon was lush, full of water and greenery, and even had a couple of douglas firs growing at 4400 feet.

By the time I reached the bottom end of McFarland Canyon, the sun was about to set. Frogs were croaking, the air felt absolutely perfect, and I didn't want to leave. I debated whether to camp here for the night, or continue on to my truck at the end of FR 25A like I had planned, and just explore the mercury mines the next day. The thought of ice cold drinks at my truck sealed my decision. I reached my truck at the bottom of FR 25A at 8 pm, where Jason had kindly moved it that morning. It had been a 15 mile, 10 hour day, and I was tired. I cooked dinner, watched a dvd in my truck, and then crashed in the bed. Ramen noodles never tasted so good.

Tuesday I slept in, shaded by huge oak trees. Eventually I got moving, and hiked back up FR 25A along the West Fork of Sycamore Creek. I hadn't seen this area in years, and the scenery was even better than I had remembered. Sycamores, cliffs, pools of water, and colorful rock everywhere! I have a lifetime of memories of this place, and all of them are good. It was great to come back.

I popped into what John and I refer to as the "Junk Mine", to discover most of the junk was gone. Cresting a little saddle just beyond, I laid eyes on the old mercury mill for the first time in years. I explored the inside of the mill, taking many photos. It's steadily deteriorating, sadly. Just an FYI, there's a bee hive living in the bottom end of the big furnace/crusher tube. I stopped to visit the Sunflower Mine itself on the way out, hoping to pick up a nice sample of cinnabar ore. After a good bit of searching, I found a couple of pieces. Before I left the West Fork, I had a good soaking in one of its pools. The water was cold, but it felt great. I hated to leave.

I was surprised (disappointed?) that I hadn't seen even one rattlesnake the entire trip. That changed only five minutes from my truck, when a large Black-tailed Rattlesnake, in full coil, buzzed me. I finally saw one. Yay! Once back at my truck, I began the long drive home, through my favorite Mazatzal Mountains. It had been a perfect trip with great friends, wonderful scenery, and adventure. I'll remember this trip forever.

Had to hike in from FR25A, too rough a road to make in the truck we were in. On the way in, we saw a vehicle had just his one of the rocks in the road earlier that morning, punctured their oil pan, and there was a line of oil down the road for quite a ways. Don't know how they managed to get out, but they must have!

Made it to Sunflower Mine, and discovered a few other little mines along the way. Found nine in all in the immediate vicinity around the Sunflower processing plant, and explored them all. We cautiously navigated them all, most didn't go in very far, but one WNW of the processing site went in a good ways, as well as up and down. The downshaft must have been nearly 100 feet.

Didn't do the whole route, the guy I was with wasn't up to it. Did take a dip in West Fork/Sycamore Creek, though. That was some wicked cold water! Waded into my knees and just couldn't manage to get myself to go any further. :o

Last time I was at the processing plant I noticed a circuit board out there next to a busted up toilet. Today I figured out that it came out of a busted up television set. Since I was down there in December, somebody put a plastic skeleton in the bathtub that sits in the creek next to the plant...too funny, will post the picture.

We parked at the cross-f TH. This is the only Mazatzal TH that's right off of blacktop. The morning temps were very cold. I saw frost on the ground! Our route for the day was: -Little saddle mountain trail
-Saddle Mount trail to the Story mine
-old cabin/the creek bed down to the Sunflower Mercury mine complex
-FR25a to FR25 to the Mormon grove TH
-Little Saddle mountain trail back to the car
As we started, we saw the AZT crew cleaning up the cross-f TH. The creek bed was dry and that made it easier to go down it. The falls colors were out in full going down the creek bed. It was a fun and strenuous hike.

Hiked from the Mormon Grove TH to 5 mines. I first hike past the intersection of the Saddle Mountain and Sheeps Crossing trails to the Story mine. I turned right at a cairn and went directly to the mine. This involved some bushwhacking for a short distance that could be avoided by going straight past the cairn and taking a longer route. After Story the hike is easy all the way to the remains of the Stone house. After that it's a difficult hike in a canyon alongside a creek that is only good for bushwhacking mountain goats until you reach Mine 2. The rest of the hiking is not difficult. The trail I used after reaching the Sunflower mine had and extra mine along the way which I called a Bonus mine. Another beautiful day in the Mazatzals.

This is an amazing area to go to. Full of history, beautiful trees, and totally remote landscape. A couple of notes on the hike and drive.

First, FR25A is 4x4 only and after it gets to the water crossing, I'd say its jacked up 4x4 only. There are numerous very rocky areas after you reach that point. Fortunately, its only about .8 miles from the turn off to the mine.

Second, about the hike. I think the 260 trail (west fork) turn off from the cornucopia trail is no longer marked. You get to a sign post that has distances going forward and back on the cornucopia trail, and there is a trail that seems to go off to the left at this point. I imagine you can still find your way along it, although I kept going past on the cornucopia trail.

I plan to go back out to this amazing area.

4 X 4 adventure with a five mile hike. Nice and cool at these altitudes and at times needed a light jacket. We saw no one else today which made it especially nice. Erosion is reclaiming this area dramatically. Browsing around the old mines is interesting, imagining the dedication and motivation for people to do the work nescessary to survive, and perhaps thrive out here. As cool as it was there are still snakes active.

Started out at the second cattle guard on this road. I could have easily made it back to where the road branches off at the 25 to 25A. Plenty of camping back here. First off I would only take a 4WD truck or SUV back here or maybe an ATV.

Some of the trail info is a little confusing, especially for someone who hasn't been there. This trail starts at the actual sunflower mine and the road to sunflower mine is very vauge here in this passage.

To get to the 25/25A split take the Sycamore Canyon road to the west. You can easily find this because there is a big green sign that says Mt Ord one way and Sycamore Canyon the other. Once going on the Sycamore Canyon rd, travel until you see a road on the right hand side that has a cattle guard. Take this road back to the second cattle guard and immediately after the cattle guard take the first left. This is FR 25. Take this back a ways until you see a road going uphill and to the right. There is a place to park right here as well. This is FR25A. If you go left you will go downhill and cross a creek bed and then start going up hill. This is still FR25.

Take FR25A back. The first half mile or so is very rocky and requires 4WD or experience to negotiate. About a mile back you will run into the "Rock Garden" mainly because of the large size rocks you will be crossing. This area might have lots of water in it since it is the bottom of the canyon. (BTW I actually recieved a call from a friend on my cell phone back here and had good reception, I use Verizon!). Once you cross the metal bridge it doesn't get worse...it gets better.

Now the road goes back and just after the first "camp ground" (I am saying this in the lightest way possible because it must have been used for that because of all the junk and fire rings around) you will take a corner to the left and there is a mine shaft that doesn't go anywhere. Continue on this road for a while until you come to a junction of two roads. One goes straight and one makes an almost 180 and switchbacks up the hill. There is also another mine shaft here. Take the switchback up to the top. The road to the "rock tumbler" like contraption where they made the mercury from the Cinnabar is off to the left. If you go right you will just keep going. You really can't miss this because there is a large area at the top to park your vehicles and the road goes down hill to the mine.

If you continue straight past the parking area on the main road you will run into another area that goes left and right. There is another mine shaft at this place as well with several options to choose from. (actually there are three roads in this area) One goes to the hard right up hill. I didn't go up this road at all so I have no clue as to what is up here. Then if you choose the middle path it goes back to several mine shafts. If you choose the left I have no idea where it goes except it goes up hill. I didn't explore this path.

If you go back here I highly recommend you take plenty of water, let people know where you are going, and don't explore the mines. This is very dangerous because the mines might collapse, hide unknown dangers, like animals, people, snakes, or vertical shafts.

On that note, this is an awesome trip. One that I recommend you take a few days and explore if possible.
