Started from the Vultee Arch trailhead shortly before 6am to beat the holiday rush and the forecast high approaching 100 degrees. I wish I had found this loop a long time ago! You get a little bit of everything on this hike: wide open red rock views on the Secret Canyon side, and a cool forest walk on the Bear Sign side. Did not see a single person on the hike, just the way I like it.

Secret Canyon trail is in great shape and very easy to follow. The southern turnoff for HS Canyon is signed, but the trail looked faint at best. I completely missed the northern HS canyon junction and have no idea if it's actually there; just like everyone else it looks like. David Miller west of the pass is a little brushy and faint in areas, east of the pass it's better and looks like there's been some very recent trail maintenance. Bear Sign and Dry Creek are in good condition as well.

It was nice to be back in this area: the Vultee Arch trail was the first "real" trail I hiked in Arizona nearly 20 years ago, and probably what spurred my love of hiking. Then the road turned into what it is today, and there's no way my old 1996 Saturn could make it down here now. High clearance is definitely required, preferably with a short wheelbase. 2WD could probably be done with careful driving and a dry road, but I was definitely a lot more comfortable with 4WD low.

I never really got into hiking when I lived in Prescott 15 years ago; the Thumb Butte area definitely shows what I missed.

Started up the paved Thumb Butte trail with a cool 40 degrees at the start. Made it to the top in about 30 minutes, which is really good for me :y: The skies were crystal clear with views to Bill Williams and the San Francisco Peaks. After that I just meandered around the various trails making a loop back to the car. This is a great area even if you skip the climb up Thumb Butte. Light traffic on this Monday morning; maybe 4-5 hikers and one mountain biker.

There was a 30 foot or so section of ice covering the paved trail in the upper sections which was slick, but very careful foot placement can get you through it. Otherwise just some small but firm muddy patches here and there along the other trails.

Bronco TH to Bartlett Dam RD - Maricopa Trail

I was surprised at the water flow considering how dry it's been lately. I was expecting it to be absolutely dry. Met two friendly hikers at the falls, and could hear some target shooting way off in the distance coming from the Bartlett Dam Road area. Other than that I had the place to myself.

Also added a little mileage by hiking east up the Maricopa Trail a little ways from Camp Creek. It looks newly built and graded here :app:

Definitely worth the easy hike. Water looked clear at the base of the falls and about 18 inches deep. Camp Creek goes underground by the time it reaches Blue Wash

Nice to see the petroglyphs not too far from home. The rustling in a bush (turned out to be a skunk), the explosives storage, and some fresh mountain lion tracks in the mud made the hair on my neck stand up a little. That and the fact that I didn't start until nearly 4pm means I didn't spend too much time here. I'd love to come back and do some more exploring, though.

The road to the trailhead is in good shape. Went slow over one little spot but my Jetta made it just fine. The brush is thick though; watch that you don't get any pinstripes.

Some larger pools in the Agua Fria at the confluence of Badger Springs wash. Looked and smelled nasty.

Frigid (by Arizona standards) and windy. Even with all the climbing I had to keep my hoodie on the whole way. Came about 6 inches from planting my shoe on a snake that was sunning himself on the Lookout Trail :o Nice view of the valley and surrounding mountains in all directions, and of the Fountain Hills fountain going off at the top of the hour.

Moderately busy, but not as busy as I'd imagined. I was expecting Camelback levels of traffic, but saw maybe 30-40 people during the hike.

Nice and cool early morning hike. I've been wanting to do this hike for a few years, but I wanted to wait until after a good rain. Days off and recent rain rarely seem to line up for me. I was not let down! The falls were flowing nicely. Camp creek was flowing fast and clear. At the junction between the two washes Camp Creek is about 15-20 feet wide and looked to be 2-3 feet deep up near the falls.

No one there when I started. One other car when I left, but didn't see them on the trail.

If you're looking for a waterfall get up there now!

Very light, but steady stream about 6 inches wide and 1/2-1 inch deep. Occasionally goes under the sand. Most of the sand in the wash is damp.

Creek about 15-20 feet wide and a couple feet deep in places. Walking through it looked like it may be difficult in some places due to the fast flow.
