Hit the trail about 6:15AM. Beautiful day to be out. Not many people out there, a couple on the Corona, one on the Guadalupe. A handful on each of the other trails.

Had a roadrunner checking me out. First I've seen in SM for a few years. Lot's of lizards of various types. No snakes.

Stared about 6 this morning. Beautiful day for hiking. Lots of Gambel Quail, a few cotton tails, a handful of lizards, that was about all the wildlife observed.

I spent the last 1/2 hour swapping my sunglasses with eclipse glasses, checking on the eclipse, then swapping glasses again. Luckily that end was not a very strenuous trail, the Pima Canyon Loop. Then went home to finish out watching the eclipse.

Pretty good day for a hike. I got on the trail before 7:00 AM. Very few other people on the trails before almost noon. Then it picked up a bit. Boulder creek was flowing very nicely. After the first couple crossings, I just started walking through the stream.

I squeezed in a trip to Lower La Barge box. Figured it might be my last visit. It was pretty well flooded. And the smooth bottom of the pools were as slippery as ice. But it was still great to see.

The hedgehog cactus is starting to bloom. Beautiful purple flowers.

My object was to try to get 12 miles in today. So I left the 1st water trailhead at 6:50, out the Dutchman's and up Black Mesa. When I got around to Second Water I knew I was needing a few more miles so I took the Garden Valley trail. I don't know what the saddle's name is where the trail splits. There is a northern leg that loops around the north side of the hill 2430 on a topo and a southern leg. I took the southern leg down to the unknown named creek that joins into 1st water creek. Then up past Hackberry Spring to the northern leg of the Hackberry tail and back around to Second Water trail and to the 1st water trailhead. Well I beat my 12 mile goal.

Not a lot of people on the trail but I met 4 really nice people. A woman out for a few day backpack, we walked and talked until out paths separated. A couple in Garden Valley from Mesa. And joined a guy hiking from 1st Water Creek to just about Second Water trail. These made the day even more enjoyable.

South Mountain is into wildflowers more than the Supes are. But there were still some really nice blooms. A few patches of Desert Chicory, some beautiful Lupin, the Desert Paintbrush really stood out, and some huge fields of what I believe is Purple Mat.

Great weather, great people mixed with time to be alone and a couple cottontails. Oh yes, and one red-wing blackbird. A great way to spend most of a day!

Nice morning for a hike. Hit the trail at 6:20. Dark clouds passed overhead around 7:30, thought it might rain. After that it was a few minutes of sun followed by a few minutes of clouds. Not many people on the trail. Saw the usual flowers, but found one Globe Mallow along the Mormon Loop with 2 open flowers. Nothing else worth mentioning.

I got ready to leave home this morning, looked outside and the ground was wet from a sprinkle. I figured what the heck I'm going anyway. Started my hike about 7:35 AM. About 3 miles in I came across a guy, he held up a finger to his lips signing me to be quiet. Just below him there were two fairly young coyotes relaxing. We were only about 12 to 15 feet from them. Another coyote was about 20 feet further. It was interesting watching them. Their heads were always moving, but they were all facing downhill and we were uphill. No sign they knew we were there. After about 15 minutes the further one got up and slowly wandered off, the others looked like they would follow. So I figured it was time to continue the hike.

Wild flowers are staring to really show themselves. 3 or 4 different small blue or purple ones. A couple small yellow ones. In one area white flowers that were the size of a pin head or less just covering the area. And lots of either california or desert poppies. There was a even group along the Mormon Loop that had 2 colors, I don't mean the common yellow and dark yellow. I should have taken a picture, I'm thinking there was red. Senior moment, I'm just not sure on the second color, but they were different from all the rest.

Somewhere along the hike I lost my sunglasses. It was overcast enough to not need to be wearing them and they must have fallen out of my pocket along the way. I'm just too tired to repeat the hike to find them. Sorry that I littered.

A little after my last hike I had a bit of an accident, ended up lifting my big toe nail way up. When I looked at it it was sitting a good 1/8 inch above the toe, I could see through under it. So for a month I took off from hiking. Figured today was a good day to try the toe out in a hiking boot. It did well. No problems.

I started my hike at 6:50 this morning from the Pima Canyon parking lot. Other than my car there were only 6 cars along the road or in the lot. And one of the 6 was just there to watch the sun rise. That's the least I have seen there in many years. Not one bike was seen on the Mormon Loop or the little bit of the Nat'l I was on. Yahoo. Other than a group of about a dozen people congregated on the Ridgeline trail there were maybe another dozen people seen. Do people not hike when it's Valentines Day?

It was cool, about 47 degrees with a breeze when on the ridge. But as usual I quickly warmed up, barely halfway through the Marcos trail. By a mile into the Guad trail I was stripping off clothes (shirts that is). I saw my first spring wildflowers, small blue ones.

Okay, people are going to disagree with me, but... I did this hike with the idea that I have always regarded Guadalupe Ridge as the most difficult hike in SM. But the TrailDEX claims this Goat Hill loop to be a higher difficulty. Plus I've heard of Goat Hill and wanted to see it. I've always walked by it in the past without giving it any notice. Out and back on Guadalupe Ridge, with Marcos De Niza thrown in, is 10.6 miles. Goat Hill via Pyramid/Bursera loop is 10.5 miles. So pretty much the same. My body is noticeably more exhausted doing Guadalupe/Marcos, out and back, then today after the Goat Hill loop. Climbing through the boulder fields is harder work than hiking fairly smooth trails. Guadalupe/Marcos (both directions) has more AEG than the Goat Hill loop. I don't understand how the Goat Hill loop is rated significantly higher in difficulty than Guadalupe/Marcos.

Pyramid is rated a 3.0, Bursera is rated a 2.0, the National is rated 3.0 in TrailDEX but when you combine the 3 trails it gets a 4.0. Something doesn't make sense.

As far as the hike goes; I hit the trail about 7:20 AM it was very cool. The wind was wild on the ridges and especially on the top of Goat Hill. I thought I was going to be blown off. And it was a very cold wind. Luckily the sun shown all morning. The National is sure a lot quieter on the west end than it is on the east end. I think I passed only 1 person in the few miles of National trail between the Bursera and the Pyramid. Oh, that reminds me the Pyramid no longer exists, it's now the Gila trail. All signs have been changed. Thanks to our friends at the park service.

Wow, lots of people and bikes on the popular trails. Large groups of families with all ages of attendees.

Anyway I started just before sunrise. The first hills were on the Marcos trail. In case you haven't used it, it is a rocky trail, both half buried rocks and rocks just laying around. Lo and behold there is a guy in front of me hiking barefoot. That is a first. I'd have had a broken toe in the first 10 minutes. And bloody feet.

I had never noticed that just beside the entrance to the east National trail at Buena Vista parking lot, there is a small trail heading south. It lead to a beautiful vista. And a large amount of trash. My small trash bag barely made a dent in cleaning up the amount there. There must be a lot of people going up there to sit, drink beer and water and eat while looking at the view. Empty bottles, cans and food wrappers all over. Worst spot I have seen in SM in many years.

Beautiful day to be out. A bit too cold at the start, but after about 2 hills in it had warmed up immensely.

I started my hike about 7:30 AM. Other than sprinkles for about an hour, it was a nice day for a hike. There weren't too many other people that thought the same. Big downpour over by Maricopa and the southern Estrella's. Kept my eye on that but it didn't come too far east. Just the sprinkles. The wildlife must not have liked the sprinkles as they were missing also.

My niece wanted to experience a hike in the Supes. So we finally came upon a good day that was available to both. It was a fantastic day, if anything a bit on the cool side. We were early enough that we saw very few people on the trail. Not really any wildlife. A few wildflowers. But the Supes made a mark upon her. She will be back.

Great day to be out. Went out the Guadalupe Ridge and back the National and Mormon Loop. Apparently bikers thought it was a good day also, over 30 of them just on the National and Mormon Loop. Luckily none ever go on the Guadalupe Ridge trail. Less than a dozen hikers on all the trails. No wildlife other than a few ground squirrels.

My goal was 16 miles. I figured to the antennas and back should come close. Wrong it was only 7 miles to the antennas. So I threw in a couple miles on the Holbert trail. I added a bit of the National after the road to the antennas. I also added a trail to the Gila Valley Lookout. Still ended up slightly short of my goal. Oh well.

Great morning for a hike. Started at 6:20 AM. There was enough light reflecting against the clouds that a head lamp wasn't necessary. Still no wildlife. Except a huge millipede.

Today was one of those days when you felt good, but found that on a strenuous trail there just wasn't the energy to finish. So I cut over to the National Trail after about 2 miles. Then all felt well. I didn't get quite the AEG I was after, but such is life. It was very cool starting at 6 AM with the breeze. I did run into one oddity I had never seen before, there was a wooden cross laid fairly flat inside a bunch of boulders. It must have been about 6 feet long. I assume it was some kind of memorial. I guess I had never looked in this spot before.

Very light night, no need for a headlamp. Unfortunately the breeze stopped about sunrise. Few people (and bikes) on the National and Mormon Loop. Only 1 other person on the Guadalupe Ridge trail. No wildlife seen other than birds and lizards.

I don't like the name changes they have done on South Mountain. The Mormon Loop name is gone and now is called part of Javelina Canyon. Most of the northeastern trails are now labeled Beacon Hill. The Beverly Canyon name can be found a mile or more from Beverly Canyon.

Surprisingly dead on the trails. A few bikes on the National and Mormon Loop. And even fewer hikers. Even less wildlife. If it weren't for the fun trail hike up the Guad Ridge it wouldn't have been much fun. At least it's cooling off now.
