I had to wait to post this because I was angry. Someone went through a portion of this hike paining white dots on boulders to mark the trail. I couldn't believe it. If they are too stupid to find the trail then they should realize that they are just too stupid to do the hike. Don't mark the trail with spray paint! I'll attach a picture. The dots are just in the central part of the trail, so I would guess they came up from Ahwatukee on one of the side trails. I didn't notice the spots on the 15th when I did this hike last. So they were probably placed there between the 15th and the 23rd.

Other than that it was a beautiful day for a hike.

The breeze made it pretty cold before the sun came up. But once the sun was up it warmed up quickly. Not many people on the trails.

I just repeated last week's hike. It was nice. Quite windy. No wildlife. But thoroughly enjoyed it.

Wow, what a fantastic day for a hike. Cool with a good breeze when I started out. Headed up Marcos to Guad then headed for the antennas on Nat'l. At a point I figured I should be half way through my hike I turned around. Switching to the Mormon Loop. But when I was getting down I decided it was still to early to quit so I added the Ridgeline and several east SoMo trails.

Other than a slew of bikers on the Mormon Loop the trails were pretty quiet. No wildlife but the grasshoppers.

Does anyone know what digs all the 3/4" holes in the trails? There are so many of them now.

At 5am on the ridges with the breeze it was almost cold today. Quite a change in only a week or two. But as soon as the sun came out it warmed up quite a bit. The only wildlife seen today was a cottontail and a couple dozen quail.

My last two weekly hikes in SoMo I have run into snakes, but only had an iPhone to capture a picture, resulting in poor pictures. So today's hike I had brought along a pocket camera to allow me to use an optical zoom. And sure enough I ran into what I believe was a western patch-nosed snake, but he was so fast I couldn't get a picture at all. I wouldn't have gotten my phone out either. I can't believe it 3 snakes in 3 weeks. I should buy a lottery ticket.

Beautiful day for hiking. Windy along the ridges, breezy otherwise. Cool only 72 on the car's thermometer when I finished. The sun was out for less than an hour of the hike. More people than usual on my Friday's hikes.

The humidity was back up. Clouds helped. I ran into about a 3 foot gopher snake on the trail. At least I was fairly certain that's what it was when it made a run straight at me almost hitting my foot as it passed by. :scared: Not much else out there this morning.

I'm going to have to start carrying a better camera if I'm going to keep running into different wildlife.

Headed up the Marcos de Niza, then the Guadalupe Ridge to it's end. The National to the Buena Vista parking lot and returned to the Pima Canyon dirt road on it. Started at 5:10AM. It was quite nice. Warm but fairly low humidity and a good breeze for the first hour or so made it quite comfortable. As I remember I have never seen the east SoMo so empty of people. I think I met/passed 2 people on the Guadalupe, which isn't unusual. But even the National I think there were 2 bikers and 4 hikers. And even the dirt road had only another 2 bikers and 2 or 3 hikers/walkers. Of course it was 96 by the time I got back to my car, but it was a dry 96.

I met a juvenile rattler on the west end of the Guadalupe. This guy's head was no bigger across than my little finger. I would have even seen him if he hadn't made a short buzz. He sounded more like a cicada than a rattler. Luckily he was wrapped in a bush so even though my foot was less than a foot from his tail he couldn't coil. I tried to get a picture of his head but had trouble seeing it amongst the branches. Then he got tired of me being near him so he took off. I got a couple pictures of his rear. Of course he went under the rock I was just ready to climb over. So I moved a few rocks down to cross so I didn't run into him on the other side.

Lots of butterflies. Still a few caterpillars.

Edited: I found out this rattler wasn't a juvenile. It was a Tiger Rattlesnake, which has a very small head and only grows to about 2 1/2 feet.

It must be the season... I heard batches of coyote pups fighting in 4 different areas of the park. Hundreds of caterpillars, yellow with black stripes. The lesser used trails are getting overgrown with weeds/grasses which the caterpillars like. Not many people on the trails, but those I spoke with were friendly.

As usual hot and humid. The sun is sure coming up later each day. My headlamp is starting to get a workout.

The humidity was down and it really felt nice before sunrise. But by the end of the hike it was feeling quite warm. The National and especially the Mormon's loop were covered with bikes. I think on those two legs there were probably over 40 bikes. The majority were courteous.

Warm and sweaty are pretty well the best description of the hike today. Very little wildlife, lizards and doves mainly. But it was enjoyable to just get out!

Wow, the humidity and pollution level was high. The smell of smoke was very evident. Got to the trailhead at 4:57AM, but as soon as the sun came up the comfort level just dropped. Apparently I wasn't the only one, there weren't many people out there on the trails.

Hot and humid this morning. No breeze. No energy, so cut my hike shorter than usual.

A perfect day for hiking. Mid 70's, good cloud cover and just enough breeze to counteract the effect of the humidity. More bikers than hikers, still not a lot, but then most of my trails weren't good for bikers. No wildlife other than doves and quail.

Nice day to be out hiking. Hit the trail right at 5:00AM, just light enough to see. Because I was sticking to ridge lines there was a bit of a breeze the whole hike making the temperature almost comfortable. Even then I ended up soaked, and it wasn't due to rain. I met a nice young lady going the same way as I was so we hiked together for a bit. Good company and conversation.

I don't understand, my last several hikes in So Mtn there have been dozens of quail. Today's hike was at the same time in the same areas and there wasn't a quail to be seen. The weather was pretty close to being the same... Hot, a small breeze, sun hidden behind clouds until after 6. Very few people on the trails compared to the usual also.

Came across a mother and baby elk. I hadn't known that a elk calf has spots like a fawn. Mom had a very noticeable limp. Nice morning for a hike.
