estrella peak has been on my wish list for awhile
highest point in the sierra estrellas and a challenging off trail hike
hooked up with lp for the attempt this morning
kind of a long drive for it, but a worthy peak
the road in was sandy and washboarded, but we thought a sedan or a van could make it
after turning left where you turn right for quartz, the road became rocky and rutted
a couple of challenging spots, but high clearance is enough
found the powerline pole for jj's route and began the hike around 8:00 or so
(right off the bat i dropped my camera and dented one of the metal telescoping rings
it wouldn't open at first, but i somehow pushed it back in line with my fingernail
please forgive the new speck of dust on a couple of my photos)
the first part of the hike was through flat desert without much vegetation to avoid
we soon entered a large drainage and began gaining elevation
found a very nice path with slickrock and very little brush
steep with some fun scrambling
this continued to within about a quarter mile of a ridgeline, where we found the loose rock and scree that we thought we might be fighting the entire hike
plenty of elevation yet to gain from this saddle/ridgeline
on the ascent, we sidestepped below the ridge for awhile, then on the descent went straight down the ridgeline, which was the better path
good views from the final ridge push, with relatively easy hiking
great to gain the high point, but the actual summit is not aesthetically pleasing, with a solar panel, communication equipment and all kinds of junk
excellent views of the white tanks, seven mile range, south mountain, the west side of the valley and the estrella ridgeline
very rugged terrain
spent a few minutes looking around, then descended back to where we dropped down the drainage and had a snack
the loose rock part only lasted about 10-15 minutes and we were soon back in the drainage
fun downclimbs and boulder hopping
ended up exiting a bit too far north, so walked back to my truck on the road
it might have been better to park one power pole to the north
thoughts:
this hike was way more fun than i had been anticipating
we both thought it would be kind of a grind
most of it was very enjoyable even though a good challenge
not sure why it isn't done more often, unless some keep it to themselves, or the drive is discouraging
thought this might be a one-and-done, but i'd definitely do it again
a very cool peak
would like to get out this way again yet this spring for quartz
thanks for doing this one with me, john :)
