| partners | | linda invited me to hike estrella peak, one that i had wanted to do again even though i knew what we were in for
set out in shade and cool temps around 0830
level ground for maybe a half mile, then a boulder field until getting into the main drainage
lots of bursera trees in the drainage
a steep ascent, but good footing on granite boulders and slabs until near the ridgeline
maybe a quarter mile of loose steep brushy terrain to a saddle
we followed the ridgeline from there, which was much better hiking
junky summit, but we took a break up top for snacks and photos
great 360 degree views and decently clear air
headed back down the ridgeline, then took a slightly better line back to the drainage
i brought a hiking pole, but i don't think it was worth carrying for that quarter mile section
downclimbed the drainage, and seemed to avoid some of the boulder field on the return
it was nice to walk on level ground by the time we were done
thanks for the invite, linda - a tough but fun hike and nice to do it again |
