| no partners | | I changed from a Quartz Peak revisit to this a few days ago when I decided something new would be more fun. This is definitely a much harder hike, and more interesting save for the antenna studded summit. The Estrellas are my favorite range to view from town, so this was one I had to do. Progress was slower than expected, and I am impressed Todd and others have done it so fast, but they likely were not out doing it on a day pushing towards 100. I needed at least another liter with me. After my summer of hiking in heat and cooler temps of varying lengths, I know the way I felt was a result of dehydration.
Either way, I followed a route up the gully that matches Todd's route the closest, and added in some stats for the road walking as I stopped for some road erosion and found a nice place to park near a tower with a bird nest up top. The air is very, very dirty, even the White Tanks were hard to see. Is this California Smoke?
Travel is pretty easy in the boulder and bed rock gully, a little bit harder on the desert below, and substantially harder on the upper slope which appears to have eroded badly from heavy rains. Moving around thorny everything and loose rock on the ridge is just irritating. The summit is an impressive one for the height, so that was nice. I just wish the air was clear. I can see me coming back to do this again someday, but Quartz is a lot easier, and I would want cooler weather with clean air. |
