| no partners | | This year for our fall hike we chose Weatherford trail. In the past we had done Inner Basin, but figured we would avoid the crowds and road closures, and take the opportunity to see some new views. I wasn't sure how the many Aspen were going to be along the Weatherford trail, while its not inner basin trail, there was still plenty to enjoy a golden tree hike.
We arrived at schultz tank shortly after 8 am and could tell by the handful of cars there, that we had already made a good choice. we headed out and enjoyed a nice hike. The thinning area near the road is noticable, but not in a bad way. We did not do the entire length of the trail and that wasn't our plan, we just wanted to enjoy some aspen. Ended up turning around at 2.68 miles, made for a nice hike before lunch. The parking area was quite full when we returned, but it appeared to be mostly bikers headed down Sunset as there was not many people on Weatherford.
WE did the trail as an out and back. I noticed a side trail that went off into the Aspen, it was unmarked and we went out a ways but then came back. After reviewing my tracks when we got back, it appears this is a side loop that met up to the main trail again just about where we turned around. Looks like this alternate route would keep you more in the aspen.
Fall color report: seems like we hit it in the prime here. Most were yellow, some had orange on top, some were bare and still some small pockets of green.
