Weather was a tad warm but once on the switchbacks the tree canopy gave some good shade relief.
Felt incredible and quick going up all the switchbacks but once I began my ascent up Doyle that soon came to an end.
My body and legs felt strong but my head and lungs had a very different situation going on.
I've hiked at higher elevations and felt fine so I'm sure it was just from the steep strenuous climb but I was definitely feeling my first taste of elevation sickness.
Knowing I was only 0.2 miles away from the summit really sucked but I still had a hearty 260ft of gain to go with a heavy pack and the fact I was out there completely solo with no real backup I decided to listen to my body and not push any further.
Took a break on the slopes of Doyle then went down and over to one of the main avalanche chutes on Freemont and took a few photos.
After that I hunkered down in the makeshift shelter on Doyle Saddle (Freemont) and took refuge from some gnarly wind while I waited for the sun to set.
Took photos around 10,000ft until 7:45pm so it was solid 2 hours back of headlamp hiking on a quiet night with the trail all to myself.
Encountered nearly two dozen deer on the way back down the mountain most of which were sleeping, it always amazes me just how reflective animal eyes are when a headlamp is shined upon them on a dark night, kind of cool and creepy at the same time. |
