Johnlp and I hit the trail around 6 am. John was on his game today. He said take Derrick first so we would finish in the trees on Horton. That way you have it for shade or cover from rain. This trail can get muddy but to our surprise it was not. We made good time to Promontory then :o  :) . That is a tough climb. Steep loose and downed trees make it an adventure. John kept us pretty close. It's easy to miss a switchback here and there. Even some cairns missed the trail  . We missed one switchback up top and didn't see the trail sign until we were getting ready to head down, later. John said just stay close to the rim and we should find Promontory Butte. We found the tall cairn first but no Butte marker. John said we should go check out the views from the next point off the rim. Good call John, we found the marker. I swear that point looks lower then were the tall cairn is. After checking out the views we headed back towards the tall cairn and found the other big cairn with the register. It's kind of between the tall cairn and the rim. The Butte was on the next point over. It was just about a mile from the top of Promontory. We took a nice break WITH VIEWS :) by the Register then headed back to finish our loop. Just follow the rim edge back and there is a couple medium cairns right before you turn down with the sign under a tree. We didn't see anybody until we got to Horton Spring. Even then it was only a few people on the whole top half. It didn't warm up to bad. With the overcast and the shade in the pines John picked us a winner!
Horton also happen to be in my Boots and Burgers book so we stopped at Buffalo Bar and Grill for burgers on the way home. Good burger, good service, good times! Thanks John, like HAZ, you rock! :y:
