| no partners | | I’ve hiked this unnamed mesa 5274’ in the northern Payson hinterlands nealry a hundred times but recently have been up here 4 times in the past 8 days because of what my pups and I encountered.
Took a completely different path than the usual route and stumbled upon a large bedrock metate and just feet behind it a broken tip arrowhead.
Eager with excitement I continued to one of the many cliff band edges that can be found on just about every direction of the mesas edge and near it were rock walls and room remnants, a small rebuilt but perhaps original little dwelling with very faded but still visible petroglyphs up above and inside.
We always see elk up here but seeing coues deer hanging out for the second day makes me one happy camper.
There’s a lot of cool stuff out in the general area with much more evidence of prehistoric occupation and taking advantage of cooler weather and moisture always makes hiking in this terrain much more enjoyable. |
