| partners | | I had heard good things about this hike, and since the weather is cooler now, I decided to head down to the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument and check out Mount Ajo. I managed to persuade Tracie the Intrepid to go down there with me.
When we got into the park, we made a brief stop at the visitors center, and then took Ajo Mountain Drive to the Estes Canyon Picnic Area, where we parked.
We began by taking the Bull Pasture Trail for a mile or so, and then took an unofficial trail up to Mount Ajo. There was a section that was steep and slippery -- it wasn't too bad going up, but I took my time on the way down. Route finding was a bit of a challenge near the peak -- I wound up going up to a false summit, and had to come back down to the "trail". I somehow got turned around and wound up heading back to the TH for a short distance. Tracie kept telling me that we were going the wrong way; fortuanately, I started listening to her. With the backtracking and going to the false summit, we added some distance and elevation gain to the hike.
We did make it to the summit and hung out there for a bit, and then made our way back. On the way back, we took the Estes Canyon Trail to complete the Bull Pasture-Estes Canyon Loop. The Estes Canyon Trail was nice and I enjoyed hiking on it.
This was a good hike, but it won't make my top 10 list. |
