I got underway about 8am under partly cloudy skies which kept it cool for a while. I started from the preserve parking lot and headed down the south side trail. Small scattering of flowers about, Lupines and other various kinds. Made the turn and crossed the creek. I enjoyed viewing the forest of saguaros on the hillside above the trail. Not realizing that I was not further down the trail than I thought I turned up the Dragonfly trail thinking it would turn back to the creek in .3 miles. Well that did not happen and As I was thinking this was the longest .3 miles ever I finally asked a hiker coming down the trail if I was still on the Dragonfly. After consulting my map I realized my error and proceeded to head back the way I came. I finally got on the trail that I should have stayed on and was now wearily looking to finish my journey. I had hoped to finish before it got too warm, it was now 11:00. sure enough shortly before the turn that takes you to the creek crossing I came upon a small group stopped in the trail. I asked someone the question I felt I had the answer to and they said that a rattler was up ahead. I inched up for a look, it was in the grass off of the trail. We all quickly walked by and that was that. By myself I am not sure what I would have done. That being done I crossed the creek and made it back to my car in a now jam packed parking area. The flowers were light in number, more lupines than anything. Adventures and all aside a day at Spur Cross is always a good day. I would like to add as evidenced by the full parking area there were quite a few people out hiking today. Including families with young children. Some starting out at midday which given my snake sighting earlier gave me cause for concern. Hopefully there were no close encounters. |
