| no partners | | I am occasionally intrigued by areas fairly close to civilization, which seem incredibly remote. This is such a place, and it's easy to understand why. The drive in is fairly long and tiresome, and the final road is hellishly tied to a pretty gruesome wash/creek. My raised Jeep w/35s was just barely up to the task. A few historical artifacts litter the final road.
Once at the imagined trailhead, we hiked perhaps 0.33 mile thru rocks and brush until it started going up. About 900' up over 0.5 mile. Terrain was a mixture of completely loose rock, punctuated by near vertical rocky ridges to scale. Each and every step an adventure. Our goal was a ridge, shaped like a knife edge that plays host to a little-known Hohokam pueblo. The final ascent was a challenging climb along a narrow ledge that provided access to the ruin. Success!
Views are spectacular and the site is littered with very large potsherds. Walls are not as tall as some, undoubtedly due to exposure to the elements. From atop the ridge, we spotted another wall off in the distance.
Shout-out to Google Earth Maestro Eric for the push that led to this terrific outing! |
