| no partners | | Decided to try this after the weekend was over, good choice as only saw four other hikers, one bike rider but 3 groups of horse riders tallying 16 equestrians in all. This created a number of obstacles to avoid in order to prevent adding barn cologne to my hiking shoes. Surprisingly I saw no cattle today! After leaving the Arizona Trail behind I headed down toward FR 4 and then Telegraph Canyon. Pleasant setting in here for a coffee break with some fall foliage remaining though much of it on the ground. Further down canyon was able to take a clear path through the jungle no need for the rocky embankment escape. Some water flowing here just enough to hear it, saw the horses stop and take a sip. Went past what I would call the connector road to the Perlite Mines which resulted in a bit extra distance as I ended up coming down it eventually. Next reaching new signage at the junction of LOST 221 and Arnett Canyon I proceeded on the newly designated 221 through the gate and up to Perlite Rd ,where it’s blocked to vehicle traffic,to overlook Rt 60 and Queen Creek. Instead of dropping down just followed the road eastward staying up high past the strip mines and the backside of the Perlite Mines. On reaching the mine entrances I could hear the metal on rock of a “miner” working so I stayed out. Gathered up a few loose tears and headed back down to Arnett Canyon. Resumed the LOST 221 toward Picketpost TH. After passing the arboretum tank and before the last gate more new signage . Decided to continue on the same route I’ve taken before now designated LOST 221 back to the trailhead, sign indicated 219 was shorter by .2 miles |
