| no partners | | It’s been a while since I’ve hiked in this area so I decided to head out and hit the Wedding Cake. The Hieroglyphic Trailhead was just about full when I arrived at 4pm. It appears most of those folks were up at Hieroglyphics Canyon looking at the petroglyphs, but I did run across 4 different groups of hikers along the Lost Goldmine Trail on the way out.
The trail to the base is nice. It’s been many, many moons since I have hiked up Old Turks Head. I had a route loaded up, but I just looked for the best way I could find on the way up. It got a little steep on the way to the base, but not too bad. I eventually got on “the trail” right at the top.
I was hoping for a nice sunset, but as soon as I reached the summit, the low clouds basically blocked the sun. I got a few pictures and started down. I kinda/sorta followed the route I had loaded, but then just veered off and made my own “trail”. I thought I heard a larger animal at the base rustling in the bush and went to investigate. I missed whatever it was. Lots of deer/sheep scat all along this little mountain. I was hoping to see one. But, alas, it avoided me. Glad it wasn’t a hungry lion!
The sunset did get vivid far off on the horizon about 30 minutes after sunset, but I just hoofed it back to the trailhead. When I arrived back to the dark TH, my truck was the lone vehicle left.
A nice hike, perfect weather and an afternoon well spent! |
