Driving near my home: Welcome to Ireland, I mean Lookout Mountain. As I point to the mountain in the distance, Tina gave a look of dismay and I knew it wasn't all the green that caused that look. I said "No, we're doing the circumference". Whew. (from a distance Lookout's summit can seem a bit intimidating). I didn't even let her unpack, just gave her some water and said change clothes and your walking tennis shoes should be just fine (forgetting that the trail can get a bit rocky in places, oops).

I parked at the bottom of the hill per usual and we went up the hill and hiked clockwise. The grass continues to fill in and get taller as does the Fiddleneck which is blooming now. We rounded the mountain to different views and different cactus. To the west I pointed out the McDowells and through the haze, the Superstions. We saw a huge batch of Pincushion Cactus. On the south side I pointed out the various other mountains (Shadow Mountain, 2429, Phx Mtn Preserve, North Mountain and Shaw Butte). And despite the haze we could see the buildings of downtown Phoenix.

We paused at the western saddle where I showed her the three different options you had from here to hike and we continued the clockwise loop around the western side. Tina was so amazed that I had a hiking trail so close and said how lucky I was; I agreed. We spotted a Scorpionweed and another cholla after admiring all of the Compass Barrell cactus we had already seen.

As we hiked northward I pointed out the Phoenix Sonoran Preserves and Cave Creek and Spur Cross areas. We rounded the northern corner and headed back to where we started. It was a good little hike to start Tina's trip. Tomorrow, we're off to the Superstitions.

For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.
