| partners | | Ginny and I spent 4 days in Payson for hiking. Our original plan was to leave Tucson really early and hike the Deer Creek trail before hitting Payson but due to circumstances we didn’t leave Tucson until 10 and arrived in Payson around 2. We changed our plans and decided to hike down Tonto Creek from Bear Flat. Sounded like an interesting hike. We got about .1 miles downstream and decided it wasn’t going to happen, too much rock hopping and scrambling and were not prepared for just walking in the stream. I couldn't help but wonder how far we would get downstream before one of us slipped and fell. We canceled this hike and instead walked the Buenagua Road at Kohl Ranch to its end where a grounds keeper told us to go through the gate past the football field and follow the creek to Tonto Falls. We weren’t too sure where the falls were and we hiked along the creek to a nice pool. After reviewing our trip against Google Earth it would appear we were just short of the falls. We headed back the way we came. Next time we are in Payson and have a short day for hiking we will have to hit the falls. It looks like there is a route just north of the falls along a dirt road just off of Hwy 260. Not sure if this is private or public land though. |
