Well, that didn't go as planned.

It was Joe's week to pick, and he threw out three losers. (Will somebody man or woman up and hike to Lion Mountain with him?) I picked the one that had us starting at Sheep Bridge TH, since I had not been there in 11 years.

FR24 was its typical 27 miles of roughness. We turned east on FR269 for the 12-mile trip to the Verde and made it through both crossings of Tangle Creek. At 9.5 miles to go, after climbing a particularly rocky section, we made the decision that this was going to take too long in the Subaru for the planned hike. Also, up to this point, it had not rained yet.

So, tails between our legs, we came up with a plan B on the fly. Linda had not done Lime Creek Cabin, it was on the way back, so it was on. Joe was overjoyed!

The trip down to the cabin was uneventful. There were a few creek crossings that slowed us down a smidge. We dropped our packs at the cabin and made our way over to the petroglyph panels. Always a treat.

Back at the cabin, a light rain started as we sat for lunch. We waited for a slight break and then started back. The heavy stuff did not start in earnest until we began the climb out. It lasted for two-thirds of the climb out. Glad to be at the saddle and starting downhill, we began picking up extra weight with the mud collected on our shoes.

We were glad to be done and in the heat of the car. Some of us enjoyed this hike more than others.
