Traffic backs into the 1-17 for both the 303 and Dove Valley exits. The shift change looks like it involves half of Phoenix. Still managed to get to the TH a little after 6. As I was getting out of my car I was greeted by a coyote about 20 yards off. Always nice when the wildlife comes to you.
Did a hodgepodge loop with the main goal of hitting the Ridgeback Overlook. I took the Apache to the Ocotillo and then onto the Ridgeback. Nice, fairly gradual climb to the overlook. From there, continued on the Ridgeback and connected to the Sidewinder. Took a brief excursion down the 14th St. connector. I’d passed this spur to the neighborhood on numerous occasions, but never checked it out. It’s a .2 mile trail to exit the park. Returned to the Sidewinder and took a connector over to the Apache Wash. didn’t feel like doing the whole loop of the Apache Wash so I took the Apache Wash South Connector to shorten the loop considerably. Returned to the TH via the east leg of the Apache Wash.
Nice loop with some moderate elevation early in the jog. Yep, that’s right. I actually jogged this trail. Seldom jog a trail in their entirety these days. Nice to still be able to do it. Saw the coyote at the TH and a couple of rabbits. Quiet initially, but ended up encountering 2 joggers, 5 bikers and 10 hikers. |
