| partners | | catclaw Report Campaign Trail #256 near and dear, by no means a show stopper, pants preferred. Reavis Gap Trail #117 minimal at best, shorts fine. Fireline Trail #118 good as always.
2012 Reavis Apple Report A few more weeks to prime picking. Bumper crop, plenty for those that do not procrastinate.
Road Conditions high clearance is plenty, which was only necessary for the creek crossing. I do know from previous experiences 4wd is required when it storms.
Annual Reavis Summer Farewell A late summer (August to early September) hike to Reavis is something I look forward to each year. The eastern Superstitions are hot like most of Arizona in the summer. The elevation and distance from the Sonoran heat bubble puts the Reavis area on a desert/high-country weather teeter/totter. Watching the point forecast like a hawk typically reveals a break in the summer heat if only for a day. The game plan is to get in early and out by 1pm. That break came two weeks ago. Ecstatic for any opportunity, this year didn't turn out to be prime in planning but it was prime in results!
Reavis Gap Trail #117 I have a love/hate relationship with this trail. The mountains, path of travel, diversity and lack of use make it a winner every time. It's roller coaster grades are not for the weary. Without the trail the terrain would be treacherous.
Fireline Trail #118 My journeys on this one have always been enjoyable. The grades are a gift compared to the Gap Trail. Pines are near on occasion. The vegetation is enjoyable and never a hassle. Day hikers are probably tired and staring at their feet, a shame indeed. Albeit no show stopper, for myself it is the subtle euphoria I seek.
Energy Synopsis I chose to lug the heavy glass camera on this trip. Humidity in the canyons was thick. The temps were borderline hot. I didn't start well slept or pre-hydrated. My planning was poor, forgetting preferred energy boosters. The added weight, humidity, heat and tired body tried to hammer my joy but it was unsuccessful... I had a blast and look forward to next year.
Breaks are underrated. About five minutes every hour seems to work well. Perhaps for resting, more importantly for absorbing.
Thanks to all that have helped me learn up, get to and experience the mighty power of the eastern Superstition Mountains. The memories keep me churning and in check. |
