The temperature was 60 degrees at 8:00, partly cloudy with sprinkles (sometimes heavy) and gentle cool breezes. It was THEE ideal weather for hiking. The start was at Crystal Lake Trailhead between Washington and Trail Lakes. I was breaking in a new pair of Salomon shoes and daypack. The trail passes MANY lakes. There was Crystal Lake, Long Lake, Duck Lake, and Island Lake----just to name a few!!! Big Elk Lake was beautiful and remote, well worth the hike. I only saw a handful of others hikers. It's important to have a reliable GPS, because I got off the trail several times and had to refer to my GPS to find it again. The area is also known for its prehistoric findings and I actually found one! A footprint in the rock! I did learn the life of my battery is limited to 15 miles. I shortened my way back staying on the main trail because my battery was almost dead and needed GPS to find the way around lakes. Lots of great views, amazing terrain, and unexpected sights! |
