I finally reached my goal of 50 different hikes for turning 50 years old this year!! #50 was supposed to be in Arizona, but my botched #49 hike turned into a 2-day affair. But that's okay, we lived to tell the tale. Hike #50 was Broads Fork Trail located in Big Cottonwood Canyon near Salt Lake City Utah. The trail head parking lot had already been closed for the winter, so had to park along the roadside. My hiking buddy wanted to do #50 with me, so after school we made it a late afternoon, evening hike. So I packed flashlights and hoped for some nice sunset pictures. Unfortunately the mountainous terrain prevented some good shots. The trail was steep from the beginning and we went slow because of my son's asthma. About a mile in, we started getting into snow and wouldn't you know it, that turkey threw a snowball at me, so of course I had to throw one back! Fun times!! There was reported sightings of moose recently, so we kept a close eye, but we only saw deer near the top. We occasionally caught glimpses of Broads Fork Creek and crossed a bridge. We had some amazing mountain views including the snowy tops of Twin Peaks. Coming back, we had about a half mile left when we pulled out the flashlights. It was a great memorable hike to finish with!! Always love hiking with my buddy!! |
