This is the peak the LDS (Mormon) pioneers used to map out the valley two days after they arrived in Salt Lake via Emigration Canyon in 1847. The beginning of Ensign Peak Trail has super easy switchbacks and would be ideal for beginner mountain biking or running. It was a warm, sunny afternoon and my hiking buddy and I welcomed any and all breezes. I took the wrong trail and accidentally took a "short cut" through the neighborhood before meeting the trail again. The monument and other posted signs were very educational about the valley's geographic locations. On the way back I took the correct trail through Hell Canyon creating a loop. It would be interesting to know the reasoning behind the canyon's name; it didn't seem particularly devilish. Maybe because under the first foot or two of top soil it was red? As we were heading back down the switchbacks, it was too tempting not to cut through the easy slope of the trail. I've always been a advocate of staying on the trail, but this was ridiculous. |
