The day was sunny and nice, but there was extra smoke in the air due to fires from surrounding states. This trail starts with the very popular trails of White Pine and Red Pine Lake Trails. At the branch off of these two trails, you continue on using the Red Pine Lake Trail. About 2 miles in, Maybird Gulch branches off and continues west. It's a less used trail and I didn't see another soul until I was back on Red Pine Trail. In fact, at one point I lost the trail to Maybird Lakes. I continued "off-roading" knowing I wasn't truly lost but when I came upon an unexpected cliff, I pulled up a map to get back on course. On my way back I paid close attention to where I deviated and place a large log across the "wrong way" for others who would certainly make the same mistake. The small Maybird Lakes weren't as spectacular as White or Red Pine and were surrounded by huge boulders so I can understand why it's less appealing. The magnificent backdrop of Pfeifferhorn Peak made for some stunning scenery and photographs, so I felt it was worth it. |
