Started just after 6am from the Desert Hills TH. Headed up Telegraph Pass to National. I either forgot or never noticed the petroglyphs next to the trail. headed east on National to Holbert then headed down Holbert. On the way down I hiked up to the Dobbins lookout.

The lower end of the Holbert looks to have been re-routed around the parking lot. I crossed the lot and got onto Las Lomitas and took that over to Ranger. I hadn't been up the Ranger Trail in 15 years, I can barely remember being there last time. The climb up Ranger really wasn't that bad. I think it was because it's not too steep anywhere and not rocky anywhere.

Took the Ranger up to the National Trail and then to Telegraph Pass again and back to Desert Hills. Lots of hikers, only maybe 2 bikers. Saw a coyote from a distance that quickly disappeared. One group of hikers warned me about a rattlesnake by the Kiwanis parking lot, but I didn't see it.

Very cool to start, had a lot of shade the first 3 miles. Got a little bit warm by the end, but not bad.

Got started up Telegraph around 0745. Cool and cloudy, which was nice, but it didn’t last long. Headed east on National, then over to the old lookout perched above Kiwanis.

Many decades ago, the Rattlesnake Trail connected that old lookout with the Kiwanis/Piedras Grandes (sp?) area down below. The trail is long gone, but I poked around the area to see if I could find any sign of it. One worn area just behind the lookout looked very steep and rugged, so I mostly just glanced at that slope. The drainage just to the east had a bit of a recent use trail, but it faded out. The drainage was pretty though. Cooler weather would allow for more exploration.

After that, I retraced my steps back down Natl & Telegraph. Warm and sunny by the finish.

I dove into the world of podcasts, and I listened to a podcast about decision-making. They were talking about procrastinating on picking a meal at a restaurant. If you see the same person a year later, that meal won't matter. Then I listened to a podcast about health and fitness. Every bite you take is a blueprint of your life.

Unbelated post. Yesterday was the nicest day of the year. Everybody except Linda was on SoMo. Deluge around Kyrene on the way over today. Only one other hiker until descending Gila.

It wasn't a group palooza, but there were a fair number of hikers. The sun made an appearance just as I started up Lost Mine. Sunshine and perfect, crossing back.

I redesigned the audio duck* approach in RS in 7.4.14. I haven't tested iOS on a hike yet(undoubtedly bugged), but Android was flawless.

Chums put up a billboard on the I-10 about the RS Review Map, that nobody is interested in points. Fair observation, so I adjusted [ 7.4.17 ] in dev. Android blows at AEG near cell towers due to OS limitations.

Since I figured out Android audio that uses two languages I barely follow, I'll soon be testing a potential fix for the AEG on Android. It eliminates the need to turn off Improve Location Accuracy, which does the exact opposite of what it sounds like. Default ON uses a fraction of an iota less power by using cell towers. OFF creates beautiful elevation profiles, but Android is so content on saving battery that an OS level popup appears each time RS is loaded, chances are slim tolerating the popup.

*There are 2 types of audio: Native(sound files) & TTS(text-to-speech/voice). Ducking is when RS lowers other audio, such as music. Precise ducking deactivation with various scenarios is the goal: begin activity, return chime, off-trail beeps, split statistics, approaching waypoints, and settings play buttons.

Busier than anticipated. I forgot it's the first Monday of the week. They get out of school for pretty much anything these days. Returning home, the sign said it was spring break, go figure. Heading up, a lanky kid with a long stride looked like he was totally bored bobbing his head side to side.

I passed a dad with his two 10-year-old boys right when he said losers make excuses. That's all I heard, so I dwelled on that for the next few miles.

There is generally somebody in a gabby, loud group who squeaks in a good morning or a hello. Simply because they're a decent person. In my case, I figure it is a safety net; please don't kill us, you odd-looking thing. The L & J lot must have been packed based on all the small groups.

Heading down, the hellos went from delivered to initiated. Then acknowledgment dwindled the lower I got. What I consider a ribbon hill is apparently a death climb. Whatever happened to enjoying the journey?

In the ravine at the bottom of Prospector, grasshopper invasion was in full swing. They were flying every which way; spring must be near. There was a guy barely in sight heading up. My initial thought was that there is no way I'm passing that guy. This is where Dave would say, yeah not with that attitude. Halfway up & maybe within fifty yards, he turned around. Probably best, I was down to toe push-ups.

Before National, I passed an older gent doing the loop in reverse. Without a spoken word, I'd wager neither of us would consider changing direction.

Easy butter miles on the ridges, which almost always have a breeze at any time of the year. Even on the hottest days, a breeze from one side or the other swoops up.

Today was sponsored in full by sunshine and a cool breeze!

Time flys, nearly four months since last. Excitingly warm but dragged getting up prospector hiking like I learned to hike by what others deem necessary.

A few poppies and lupine in shadow hollows.

Quick afternoon workout hike. Telegraph Pass to Goat Hill and back. The usual nonsense on Telegraph. Nice breeze.

Early morning hike at SoMo. Started from Kiwanis a little after 6:30. Up Kiwanis with a side trip to the stone tower and then on down Telegraph. Didn’t see any hikers until Telegraph. Went to the end of trail, said hi to the missionaries and headed back over the saddle. Kiwanis is not one of my favorite trails. A lot of stair like steps, but decent amount of shade for those summer days. Not an issue today. The Telegraph has more of an incline, but I can choose my stride so I’m ok with that. Usually a pretty busy trail, but only encountered 15 hikers (not including repeats).

Another beautiful morning for a hike. No wildlife on the trail, but I did see a coyote and a field mouse (crossing the road) on the drive to the TH. Encountered 18 hikers all told and surprisingly, just as I was finishing up, two horse riders were heading up.

Slept in too late to do the original hike I’d planned. Opted for a quick drive instead. Parked off Desert Foothills abd accessed Desert Classic thru the neighborhood. West on DC. Telegraph Pass was a retard pooeyshow, and that’s putting it nicely. I’m losing tolerance for people who venture outdoors with absolutely zero planning for what they are doing—no water, no map, no common sense. Nobody ends up on a hiking trail by accident, yet they act utterly confused by the activity. I told at least three different hikers with dumb questions “I don’t know. I’ve never been here before.” They don’t have to know I could hike Telegraph with my eyes closed. One little boy, about five years old, was funny though. Hiking in pajamas, he was telling his mom he was in desperate need of a ham and cheese sandwich with pickles. I hope he got it, because he earned it.

At the pass, east on National, where the circus was left behind. Still had some shade in places. At the high point of National, chatted with one hiker who seemed to be of normal intelligence. After that, I headed up to Gila Valley Lookout, then continued east on Natl. Down Corona, then west on DC before hopping onto Guadalupe Perimeter and taking that all the way west. Hot by that point, although I was informed via text that it was less than 70 degrees. Zero sympathy for my having to be out in direct sunlight.

Good workout. Still liking the new T1 trail runners. Very light and grippy. I need to try them out on a longer hike.

Evening heat to avoid the suffocating December heat. Tons of hikers finishing up their hikes as Chumley and I headed up Telegraph, then no other hikers the rest of the evening. Nice breeze as we gained elevation. West on National to Goat Hill. Then down Ranger. East on Las Lomitas, which Chumley said had to be included in the hike or else it wouldn’t be worth the effort. Up Kiwanis to complete the loop, then back down Telegraph. Good workout. Thanks, Chumley, for joining me on this one and listening to my complaining.

Figured there was no better number 2 to Y Bar than LaLo, the crown jewel of Phoenix's city trails. Made a loop of it with a side trip to the goat.

Too hot while the sun is up, but insanely pleasant temps at night for mid-December, nice breeze. Two brief glimpses of another headlamp on the mountain, otherwise it seems people are waiting a couple of more weeks until they resolve to hike more.

Fourth consecutive test hike after humdinger filter rewrites based on three previous hikes collecting data, RS should be a lot closer in fine detail to other apps. It'll be a while before a release. Looks promising on this route.

RS previously recorded 500 points average on this hike

Android S24
3.43 mi - 776 AEG - 1292 points [ RS ]
3.27 mi - 820 AEG - 1621 points [ AllTrails ]
3.46 mi - 744 AEG - 4729 points [ Strava ]

iPhone 16e
3.25 mi - 807 AEG - 1286 points [ RS ]
3.15 mi - 768 AEG -- 456 points [ Gaia ]
3.32 mi - 751 AEG - 4879 points [ Strava ]

Apple Watch 11
3.26 mi - 787 AEG - 4593 points [ Apple Workout ]
3.16 mi - 845 AEG - 1410 points [ AllTrails ]
3.28 mi - 808 AEG -- 758 points [ Gaia ]
3.42 mi - 751 AEG - 1666 points [ Strava ]

It's impossible to please all. I wanted to tackle it after resolving the AEG issues over the summer that Team00 pointed out. Zooming in on this one, satellite on MapDEX, shows the tiny variations between various apps, 3 devices within 2 ft of each other.

Notable recent HAZ edits:
  • Everyone has the opportunity to suggest Label page feature photos: +Detail and +Full
  • KMZ & KML upload/download should work now in Route Editor
MapDEX is in the middle of a year-long update to a new Google api, so KMZ routes will likely freeze the users' browsers
  • Opened the flood gates on RS Save/Share EDIT Route, load in whatever other data you want, draw boundaries as needed. If "Also update Distance, AEG, Total Time & Breaks" is checked & more than 1 track, a pop-up now offers a list of the tracks you want to include in stats
  • Save/Share triplog entry now has Popup Draft (map)
  • Wish List wishes with notes and date now allow HTML on-site linking for those that can figure out "a" tags

It’s been so long since I hiked with Denny, he forgot how to get to SoMo. Started up Telegraph just after 0530. Temps were okay, but a breeze was lacking. Shade was delightful.

At the pass, we headed down Kiwanis, which had a fair amount of green from the recent rain. At the trailhead on that side, we turned around and retraced our steps.

Good early workout hike, and always fun to hike and chat with Denny!

I met Linda a little after our scheduled meet up time. 🤭 We headed up a little after 5:30am.
The trails seemed to be in the usual shape. A few hikers and runners but not busy. We hade shade for 3/4’s of the hike. Yeah! Nice to get an early hike in and catch up with Linda while she is visiting Arizona. 😁Like HAZ, she rocks!

Pin cushion cacti are blooming in force.

Cool breezes on the ridges were incredible. Yards away from the ridges were sauna-esque.

Live ocotillo and bursera have responded vibrantly to recent rains. The dead ocotillo is now easily distinguishable. The trails here are covered with gravel-sized rock debris after every rain; the mountain is slowly eroding.

A few more out for the holiday, but not much more due to the temps. A young couple mountain biking up Pyramid was remarkable for the weather; they were two-thirds up. Nice pricey bikes, and she was in good spirits but lagging as he crawled ahead.

Looks like the Telegraph River crested at low tide last night.

Tested RS 7.2.5 after a few days working with GPT-5 and added logic to stop the double recording issue on Android. Possibly iOS, I just had not experienced it myself. Then, notably for Android, added fast reload. You can now cold boot and get hiking right away without waiting. Also, fixed a bug in the initial background to load the offline maps.

Simplicity has its advantages. Soon after I started the hike, it would be over. No fretting miles 17 and up.

Headed down into Bursera bathroom wash, and there was a mountain biker gasping/grinding like he was going up Prospector to get out of the 3% grade wash. Exiting the flip side I heard the wiz of another biker. I stepped aside. This was the steeper side and he could have bunny hopped over me going up. I don't think they were together... Lol

Tested the Dixie RS recipe for disaster, and it worked like a charm. I haven't had time to go over the debug logs, but I'm wondering if it might be Android-related. I need to test the sequence thoroughly on an iPhone. Just know that I had to bump up the Android version a couple of weeks ago. There was also an OS update to the phones last month. One of the core plugins that RS uses does not yet support 16 KB page size, so that might make it crash if not always in or out of airplane mode.

Absolutely no breeze early on was a little muggy. Always get a nice breeze coming up along goat ridge. Hints of Autumn in the breeze.

Prehydrated: 38 oz
Carried: 174 oz (124 frozen)

When I arrived, a large group of about 16-24 people was getting ready to head out. I thought they were runners, later realized they were mixed ages and backgrounds. I started a half furlong behind them. I passed them and then never saw them again, concentrating on transitioning from Grillz to My Way. Guessing they turned on Desert Classic.

This was my first time on the west side of Bursera. More people out here than expected. Teenage girl, three guys (Kurt Sedler types), then two guys who could be star quarterbacks or excellent car salesmen. The geology is more reminiscent of Estrella/Piestewa.

This is one of those rare hikes where you're hiking away from looking at the sun or without staring at the sun on the drive, either.

The West end of Gila is undoubtedly loved by no one. It skirts the bajada, dipping in and out of a few ravines. Whereas the Bursera across the ravine has nicer alluvial geology to glide over.

The steepest grade on Prospector was in full sun, but I got a nice breeze.

Generally, I avoid Goat Hill, since it's illegal. The pre-planned hike was under 20 mi and under 5K. So I figured I'd hit a few little peaks along the way.

Two rangers at the bottom of the Ranger Trail with a funky couple behind me. Luckily, I'd recently tackled these nondescript multi-use trails scattered about the actual trail and sailed through.

I needed to rearrange a lot of water bottles and such, so I thought it'd be a good opportunity to tackle a sliver of Judith Tunell Interpretive Trail and utilize the Ramada for a few minutes. Whoo doggy, the rubberized grate bench in the shade was comfy. What are the chances two families came off-trail directly down the hill and stopped at the Ramada... lol C'est la vie, probably best to keep moving anyway.

Dec 23rd 2024, KingLeonidas posted a clue via RS where the temporary or new trail routes. It worked out great. Just be sure to verify which days are legal, cuz I'm no angel. From previous hikes, I had a lunch spot in mind. Only partially shady, but it worked out. I ate half of a dry WinCo ham and cheese on a pretzel hoagie, cuz there needs to be something other than water and electrolytes in the mix.

Realized I only had 36 oz of water left. So I nixed two side trips to push it over 5K in favor of life. Since it was later in the day vs recent previous trips, a few more shade options were opening up. I took a 6-minute break at one, but just wanted to finish the hike.

40 oz more water would have been better, but it all worked out.

Android stats in airplane mode start to finish, 2,983 points, used 25% battery.
iPhone 20.15 mi / 4483 AEG | 3,228 points, never in airplane mode, used 35% battery.
2 bug fixes for RS 7.2.4 in dev worked, perhaps out in a few days.
