First hike in a couple of months for me. I've had a setback with my surgery rehab but I hope to be getting out more frequently... now that I've missed all the cool weather ](*,) . It wasn't much of a winter or spring, was it?

Salida Gulch Trail in the PNF is a short scenic hike with many shallow creek crossings (dry right now), but there are several connector trails to add on to it if one desires a longer trek. Johns Tank Trail [ Johns Tank Trail #94 ] https://hikearizona.com/photo-E.php is still closed Dec. thru June due to the nesting bald eagle pair in the area. Combining the Lynx lake Loop [ Lynx Recreation Trail #311 - Lake Loop ] with this hike makes for a good outing to entertain out of town guests.

Speaking of Lynx Lake...don't make any plans to visit for a while. They have the lake drained to less than half capacity to facilitate repairs to the northern dam and spillway. Not a pretty sight. :o

Trails in this area of the PNF have the usual suspects of flora... Ponderosa Pine, Alligator Juniper, Scrub Oak, and Manzanita. Trail maintenance was superb for the hikes entirety.

Warning: this route includes climbing up a steep slope strewn with rocks and bushes. It's not too bad uphill, but I wouldn't have wanted to try to come back down that way. The route also includes a well-worn path between Salida Gulch Trail #95 and Salida Connection Trail #9263 that I had hoped to find. Using that path is longer in distance to get to the top of the knob, but shorter in time. This route was a first attempt to find an alternate way to get to Salida Trail #93.

Hike #1 of the day. My sister drove up from Tucson to help get me out of the house. We had planned on taking the Salida Gulch Trail in Prescott to the crossover John's Tank Trail and then cut over to Lynx Lake for a loop. The cross-over trail was closed due to the nesting Bald Eagle pair so we just continued on the Salida loop CCW. After we finished we drove over to the lake to hike the circumference trail #311. I'll write up a second triplog for that.

The weather couldn't have been better and Lynx Creek was flowing nicely but not high enough to cause any problems. We were able to rock-hop the many crossings and stay dry. This was my first trail hike without Mrs. SloFolks and I doubt I could have done it without my sister's help. Thanks Michele.

It was a smoky, hazy drive out of the valley this morning because of a mulch fire in Mesa that's been burning for the past few days, so it was nice getting out into clearer air. I hadn't driven on I-17 in almost a year, so I got my first look at the widening project on the way to Prescott. We started near Salida Gulch Trailhead...not quite in the actual parking lot--between the GPS, some confusing dead end signs, and an unusual pair of parallel roads on opposite sides of Lynx Creek in the residential area, we ended up parking in a pullout along the road...close enough.

Salida Gulch Trail #95 was flat and easy early on, crossing the creek multiple times. A mile in, we passed the petroglyphs, which were better than expected--a lot of rock art concentrated in one area, with various figures of people and animals, some circles of life, etc...and no obvious graffiti, which was a bonus.

Past the petroglyphs, we took a short, unofficial but easy to follow trail that led to Salida Connection Trail #9263 and followed that for less than a mile to Prospectors Trail. The guides for these trails are accurate: wide, easy to follow, and rocky multi-use trails. There's a lot of short, rocky downhill sketches mixed into the general upward climb. It's a complex network of trails out there...in some areas, it felt like we were passing intersections every mile or less. Bull Tank and Quail Tank both had some murky water, and we made our way around the south side of Bear Down Mountain.

TboneKathy was ready for a break from the rocky ups and downs, so she waited near the trail while I made the short bushwhack up to the peak. It was a lot rockier up there than it looked from below. Great 360° views from the top, but I felt like I was back in the Mazatzals with the swarms of ladybugs, which seem to thrive on these ~7,000' peaks. It was tough to tell which rock outcropping was the true summit, but the guide says the westernmost is slightly higher. I searched for the summit register on both and came up empty, despite the detailed photo from @Peter_Medal [ photo ] in 2016...not sure if it's gone or if I just missed it among the many boulders up there.

[ youtube video ]

On the way back, we followed Salida Trail into new territory with the same wide, rocky trail and a mix of ups and downs. We stopped for lunch in the shade near Salida Tank, and thunder started as we got moving again. Thunderheads had started gathering early in the morning and got darker as the day went on. We could see rain streaks under the clouds, and when we reconnected with Salida Gulch Trail, we decided to shorten the hike and skip the originally-planned extension over to Lynx Lake on John's Tank Trail.

When we finished, we'd completed a kind of odd figure-eight/lasso loop route with a hook on the end. The clouds had stayed away, so we decided to tack on a short hike to see the Lynx Creek Ruins and then check out the lake. The petroglyphs and peak were highlights on this hike, and it was pleasant overall, but there isn't a lot of variety in the scenery or terrain--the early stretch along the creek on Salida Gulch was flat and easy, and just about everything else was very rocky, which isn't bad, but does get a little annoying after a while.

Joe put together this collection of trails that I'd never been on.

We started at 62 degrees and sprinkles. Needless to say, the humidity was up.

We started and finished on two different sides on the Salidas Gulch Trail. This trail is by far in the best condition of all the trails we were on all day.

Next off to the Salida Connection Trail 9263 to hook up with The Salida Trail #93. Both of these trails are multi-use and steeply rollercoaster on mainly ankle busters. There are some nice views, but the ankle busters wear on you.

Past Beardown Peak, the views open up to the North and East. We turned around at FR 9419 and took a break for lunch at a boulder outcrop.

On the return trip, we took a couple of different tracks which were much more enjoyable.

It was great to be back on #95. Smooth trail, gentle grades, cool breeze, puffy clouds, babbling brook, chirping birds, quiet Joe.

Salida Gulch Trail #95
We tackled this counterclockwise. It started in a better ponderosa pine Forest than I expected. After a half mile, it drops off to what I expected, more pinion and scrub. It gets a new life passing the highpoint of the trail and soon after John's Tank.

Old #93 Stub
We used a use-trail that I found on satellite to jump up to #9263. It is the old alignment of #93 before they split off the bottom as #95.

Salida Connection Trail #9263
Motorbikes, E-Bikes, and sissy crawlers are allowed on the upper portion of 9263. Which typically translates to horrid tread but it's not as bad as #93. They put in zipper switchbacks at what appears to have been a former bad area. Based on satellite, the motor crowd can still get their kicks on the old rock slide, so this is a rare case of a multi-use trail working for both worlds.

Salida Trail #93
I liked portions of this trail. Most will give it a one-of-five based on the ankle-buster tread. It's nowhere near as bad as Tompkins Trail #513 but I realize hardcore explorers need stroller smooth surfaces.

Prospectors Trail #42
I created today's hike as an out-and-back on #93 so I could get good details for a guide page. As expected, Bruce tried twice to switch it up. This cuts off the worst of #93. There is a nice pocket in that roller coaster of ankle-busters.

That said, he was a good sport doing this hike instead of nicer nearby hikes. Going up bad tread is easier than descending so he didn't have to twist my arm again to cut out the ankle-busters. It was interesting hearing him trying to sell the deal: Waterfalls, palm trees, cheerleaders, and half the distance.

Angela invited me to hike in Sedona a couple of weeks ago, so today I repaid the favor and took her up to Prescott for a couple of hikes to get out of the VOS. This was hike #1, Salida Gulch Trail #95. She had never hiked it and I thought it would be a good time of year for it. The weather was fine but where water usually runs the the entire eastern leg of the trek, today it was dry. :(

She seemed to like it, (so she said) and we both agreed that clockwise should be the preferred direction of travel. Great views to the north as you loop around John's Tank. We had planned to add the John's Tank Trail #94 over to Lynx Lake but the Forest Service website said it was closed due to nesting eagles. We saw no signage of any closure but still stayed on our loop and decided to drive over to Lynx Lake for hike #2 when we were done.

Greg had suggested this hike last week but I couldn't make it so we put it together for today.

It was a chilly start and I actually wore my vest the whole hike.  It was really quite pleasant the entire way.  No water in the gulch with only dabs of flora.  Greg, of course, knew where the glyphs were so called me back to see them; a very nice panel.

The trail is in really wonderful shape and by going clockwise, the hike up is very nice and gradual. I think the views are better this way as well.  There were several lizards but they were fast so I wasn't able to get any good pictures.  However, we did get to relish several shots of a Swallowtail as it just sat in a bush.  There are eight gates; a couple had the same open/close mechanism I had not seen before but I really thot they were pretty cool mechanisms.  We saw about ten people along the way, all going the opposite direction.

WATCH: 4.41 miles (low point 5313, high 5781) 116 bpm/143 max (7% Zone 3, 59% Zone 2, 33% Zone 1) burning 676 calories. Temp 59, clear and 13% humidity finishing at 11:02AM

Kind of a last minute plan, decided after I woke up to head to Prescott. Had the Salida Gulch area on the mind, and saw some maps suggesting Sevenmile Gulch could potentially allow for a bigger loop. Didn't really have a plan or do any research, though. Got to Ranch TH and jogged down to Lynx Ruin TH, then followed the road to Salida Gulch TH. Followed the trail up the bottom of the drainage to the spring, then found the junction for the connector down to Lynx Lake. Didn't know if this was an actual trail or just a line on a map, but since it was marked, I took it.

Got to the lake, now headed back toward the car, and decided I have enough energy for a diversion, so I headed through the culvert under Walker Rd to Sevenmile TH, and headed up. Didn't know this trail system allows motor vehicles, but only saw two motorcycles on trail so NBD. Lots of motorcycle trails heading off every which way, so didn't know if I was on the right trail, but figured eventually I'd hit the circle trail if I kept heading west. After a steep climb out of the gulch, hit a T junction, and headed north. After about a half mile I came upon the Ranch Trail connector.

Ranch Trail was a lot longer than I would've liked, but at this point I at least knew that this would bring me back to the TH, so that was nice.

Weather was good, just a few sprinkles while on the ranch/circle trail, and about as temperate as one can expect this time of year.

Did this hike August 6 and really enjoyed it! Last time we hiked CCW so this time we did CW... more of a gradual climb this time. During the week it’s mostly locals and we saw 5 single hikers on this 2 hour hike. Last time we did it a local said I don’t need to leash my dog 👍 .

Then we drove up the road a bit to South end of Lynx Lake. Senior National Pass covers the $5 fee. Picnic table in the shade over looking the lake and 30 feet to where we can fish. Caught one stocker about 10 inches and released it. Catching one is SO much better than none!

We had a very enjoyable day with a nice hike and beautiful spot over looking the lake.

Bonus..stopped at Costco on the way out and paid $2:09 for gas 😊

A shout out to LosDosSloFolks for recommending this hike. Lynx Creek was running high and fast at the crossing at the very beginning of the hike. Took our shoes/socks off. At the decision point for CCW or CW, there was a group of a dozen senior hikers and lots of chatter so we waited to see what they would go....and we went the other way. There was enough shade that the 8 AM start worked out OK. We’ll do this hike again👍

Hike #1 of 2 today as we traveled to Prescott for a second week in a row to beat the heat in the valley. This loop is a real winner. We had looked at photos online and decided to give it a go but it turned out to be a "sleeper". First car at the trail head a little after 6 am. We went CCW to hike what was said to be the more exposed western side of the loop first. Figured being in the sun while it was 15 degrees cooler might help. There was plenty of shade so either direction of travel would have been fine. This is one of those short trails that is so nice you would likely never tire of hiking it on a regular basis.

We took our time as there was much to gawk at having never been on this trail. Heading north on the eastern leg we crisscrossed a stream bed about 20 times. Occasional trickles of water could be heard. Each time the temps would noticeably drop and we would receive a nice breeze. A little bit of heaven compared to the valley. About a mile from the trail head we stopped to check out the petroglyphs we heard were here. Shortly thereafter we came across a rabble of Swallowtail Butterflies. They were very large in size and were coasting about like birds. Quite the sight. We would see more later on during our second hike of the day.

Bottom line...great little hike away from the crowds of nearby Lynx Lake. I liken this trail as similar to Smith Ravine #297 but without all the exertion! I guess ravines are just tougher than gulches. :) The only man made noise we heard during the hike was at the very start...a prospector shaking dirt in his pan. It took a minute to figure that one out!

We started this hike following a track posted years ago and found that things have changed up at the north end of the trail where development is encroaching, so decided to post our route. The trails are confusing enough so that having a track to follow is very helpful.
We paid our $5 per car area access fee and parked at the paved parking lot at the north end of Lynx Lake. Take Hwy. 69 from Prescott or Prescott Valley, go south about 2.5 miles on Walker Rd. and turn left. This area includes a store and cafe, lake access, picnic area, restrooms and drinking water. The fee covers access to all recreation sites in the area, including a nearby ruins site and gold panning area on Lynx Creek.
Hiking clockwise, the northbound section follows along Lynx Creek much of the way. Start on trail 445 on the east side of the parking loop, then briefly on 442, and then 444 which ends at the Gold Panning area. Continue north on the dirt road to where it ends at a parking area with a large sign. Cross the creek and look for Trail 9263. The trail is confusing in this area and there are several gates that must be opened and closed, but you should end up on trail 95 which meanders generally southbound. As it curves west, find trail 94 which goes steeply uphill and then gradually down towards the lake and the trailhead.
There are many young trees and bushes along the trails but not much shade, so an early start is best to avoid the afternoon sun. The trails have lots of ups and downs with many beautiful views from the high points. We also found many species of wildflowers, especially near the creek.

My bestest hiking buddy Maria joined me in a Prescott hike. Got to the Salida Gulch gate at 6:58 this morning to find a closed, locked gate. Burned some time driving down Walker road and back (20 minutes) and return to find the gate now open. Drove down to the trailhead and started our hike at a brisk 27 degrees. Headed up Salida Connector trail to Prospector to Salida Trail back to the connector and then jumped on a short trail down to Salida Gulch trail to return to the trailhead. Found an old lean-to type structure on Salida trail and old cabin ruins on Salida Connector. Wasn't planning on dropped down to the Gulch, but sure glad we did as we found some nice petroglyphs along the creek about a 1/2 mile or so from the trailhead. Didn't see a single soul over the whole 10+ miles.

Officially, Stoneridge Peak on the USGS Maps is "Unnamed 6542'" .... Stoneridge Golf Community, Prescott Valley, is located to its north. This ridgeline has 4 prominent hill profiles and is a textbook "ridgeline hike" with summit bag. This peak is the most prominent peak view for the Town of Prescott Valley (aside from Glassford Hill, but thats not a peak). You cant look south from anywhere in PV and not see this pointy peak.

Once on the first bump there is a barbed wire fence line with a trail running along its east perimeter. This is private property. Prescott National Forest is on the west side of this fence line. My hike partner thoroughly enjoyed the trail until it petered out. Hike partner said "This is by far one of the best hikes he has been on in the Prescott area". He enjoyed the ridging it; the lack of any crazy bushwackyness; no people; close to home; and awesome views.

I would compare the ridge portion comparable to Apache Peak in the Whetstones. Complete with Shin Daggers above 6300' (but not that many).

I knew going in that we were going to be bisecting private property so therefore, will not use my route for the official route description (coming soon). But I wanted to experience the full north ridgeline traverse to its summit. This peak can be accessed via the new Green Gulch Trailhead from Dewey and bagged and tagged with Sun Devil Peak and/or Bear Down Mountain. Or accessed from the northwest to the ridgeline.

We bumped into two of the property owners ranch hands on the way down. The guys were servicing the fence and wanted us to be clear that we were on "private property" and the west side of the fence was not. Ok.

The third bump was a rock climb. Nothing scary. Hike partner was loving the scramble.

There were four entries in the summit register which was more or less a geocache. I did not have a pen, so will have to comeback again but via a different approach.

Hit the weights hard, looking for some cardio. This is a nice easy-moderate loop. Did the loop counter clockwise which seemed a little steeper this way. Not a destination hike but a nice one for anyone in decent shape

Another day off from work, another day out of town to hike. Headed up to Prescott, to check out some of the trails that I "discovered" near Lynx Lake from my previous visit. Started off around 8am at the Salida Gulch #95 TH. This trail, initially starts off as a dual trail, #95 and #9263. About 200 yards in they quickly divide with trail #9263 going off to the left up a hill. I chose Salida Gulch #95 because it looked like it would be a fairly short and contained loop hike. Did the trail clockwise, which - I believe - turned out to be fortunate thing. The trail starts out spending a lot of time in a gulch, Salida Gulch I assume, but makes a slow gradual climb up into the hills. The gulch itself was only slightly muddy from recent rains, but I could easily imagine it being active from snow melt or a good downpour. The climb itself was so gradual that I didn't feel like I had climbed at all. I had just about gained the upper ridge, when this trail connected to trail #94.

I was anxious to do trail #94, because I had encountered the other end of it the previous week when I had hiked the Lynx Lake #311 trail. The trail#94 did a short climb to a rise (with decent views, but I couldn't see the lake) and then did a steady drop down the other side. At first, I thought this was going to a straight, direct trail to the lake. But there turned out to be a few twists in the trail. Except for the rise where this trail crested at, most of the hike took place in a wooded surroundings and brought me down to the northeast corner of the lake, near the dam. The length of this trail was about 1 mile one way. I headed back the trail #94 and continued along the Salida Gulch trail.

After returning to the Salida trail, I gained a few more feet in elevation - was treated to a nice open view of the surrounding area, still not able to see the lake even though I knew where it was - and then started a steady descent back into the gulch. The Salida trail was not as wooded as one might hope, but there were ample spots for shade, especially at the lower levels. And for being as close to civilization as it was it still gave a feeling of remoteness for most of the hike. I encountered one dog walker near the beginning of the trail, but otherwise had the trail to myself.
