met up with Marty for this easier looping canyon/ridge combo. Added on a lower entry point to the canyon that proved to be a great lower section. Perfect weather complimented this exceptional drainage. I'd forgotten how nice this canyon is... and with the lower Spur trail exit it really comes together to make a great looping hike. The Jumble still poses challenges and limits the range for Beginners, but everyone else can enjoy the route. Really nice!

Fourth month of the progressive canyon series was less progressive yet still very appreciated. last minute changes yielded seven hikers for this bit of up down/in out... and the shorter day seemed well enjoyed by everyone. Lisa will hopefully come again... and next time bring along more than a pint of water in a waist pack with no food! I gave her three qts of energy drink to carry her day; she did great! I was in the final stages (I hope!) of my first head cold since 1994... a bit dingy with the low grade fever... but it was a much easier day... on mileage and elevation... and no demanding climbs.

A good day.

Next month... back to harder!

Beginners seemed to really enjoy this hike... because it was so easy! By far the shortest and fastest and easiest of all our Sunday outings, and it goes up to an interesting and historic spot... Guess we may need to rethink what is better for the Beginner hikes?

trash pickup day... and unfortunately as we climbed out of the Slot... found a red arrow pointing to the hidden entrance! Likely the same idiots who junked up the canyon! So... back up via the trail to do something about that defacing? The owners of the canyon closed it down some years ago because of the mess made by groups; it could happen again? I hauled out a load today...

the hike was really an exploratory up Slide Canyon... it turned out to be much nicer than it's neighbor, the Cactus Cliffs Cut... descent down N3, Ridge Canyon.

Big midweek turnout for the meetup hike, with a new hiker, so we altered the route... did a selection of ins and out and ups and downs... then, split the group and did a nice exploratory up Lost Trail Canyon N1. It was nice... and, we finally scored a Crinoid that included more than just the trunk section. Been looking for that.

On top of the project work blended into the last months of the year... just got Jury Duty!! here it is for 90 days!!! I'm on till the end of the year. I'm not certain when I can increase the hiking to get back to a training level... may be after the first of the year??

First loop with Alena... drove over from El paso. Big emphasis on fossils today.

Second loop with Rebecca and her one year old son... Will and his six year old... Lynda, John, Kathryn.

12 hours door to door for me... so odd... in the summer I was frustrated to not hit 12,000' with that many hours (...16 hours!) and now I log only 3,000'!!

Terri back tomorrow... start in on real training? The knee seems to be good, but until I stress it with some serious mileage, I will not really know.

Ross and Will along for this mid canyon exploratory. Turns out this section houses the most impressive water fall feature in the Alamo area, and right now it even has water! Upper pools can be heard streaming water between the three pools... then, there are a variety of additional pools at various levels along the length of the bedrock falls. Impressive.

We did a steep exit, and hiked over to check out both The Cascades and lower Pock Rock...

nice day

Will and Ross out for exercise... we redirected our efforts up into the Lost Trail drainage... rains making the pooling in Ortega Canyons too much? We closed out up to Lost Trail using a north spur... lead up to a very nice dryfall formation with interesting strata... descended Lost Trail... then around on the road/trails.

socked in... blind hiking. Odd, I picked this route to give us views and overviews of the surrounding areas; no way today! So, we walked John around and down into El Gordo, then we checked possible trail routes around the cliff tops. It finally cleared out as we finished our day... oh, well.

Ross and John... Alena a no show today.

Met Ross early for hike up to The Cave... opted for some route finding up and to the Slot first. Wow... it turned out to be exceptional, and too challenging for us to climb on our own. I'll come back with Kim to get up into the next level, or I'll carry in a climbing pole.

The Cave turns out to be nice, but not a feature we will need to protect. It is hard enough to get up and in to discourage most folks... and the drama is all out in the entry and first 100 feet. It deadends soon after on the main branch... and climbing up to the side branch 40-60 feet to the back of the upper shelf... all crawling. Lots of crystal structure, but no huge drama.

It is a great intermediate level hike destination.

Looks like Cabrito Canyon may make a nice exit loop... if some issues can be resolved on the route along the Cliff bases.

Need to haul out a ton of trash... someone was living up in under one of the cliff overhangs for awhile.

A good day, and finished just as the floods begin!

Aleana drove over from El Paso... her first time to hike here. Emphasis on photos for her, and looking for more difficult hikes. So, did a sampler loop. She will be back for more.

Displaced my training day; I need to get back on schedule with that!

Heading back up to explore the Cave on Friday; see if there is more to it than initially appears...

Good Stuff... Bad Stuff... lots on interesting stuff. Not sure why this hike beat me up so bad, but I'm foot sore, leg tired and thinking about going to bed... now (3pm)!

Good Stuff: checked out the full length of the historic horse track up Beeman Ridge, along the Sentinels Bench traversing into Beeman Canyon above the Jumble... then snaking and sneaking up and around into the North Fork, finally connecting with the old jeep track coming down from Winter Peak. Nice to finally locate that entire old track.

Interesting Stuff: numerous traversing options to address The Wall on Beeman Ridge... switchbacks... Horse Canyon Ledges... Horse Canyon Falls and Bench... additional hangglide launch ramp? Very interesting: discovered old well/spring on the spur off of Beeman Ridge Spur trail... looks like a brick chimney, in fact: squarish rock substantially inlaid into hillside.

Bad Stuff...descending the "real" Horse Ridge. I'd always cut down the first inner ridge: easy walking... simple descent to the canyon bottom. Today, after spotting five oddly dressed hikers below us, I stayed with the main Ridge tracking them. Noted that this route did have a real trail as opposed to just free walking the ridge top... unfortunately, the path followed an old jeep track. Terrible walking! Ross was mumbling and suggesting various easier exits... good idea but I wanted to track the road/trail to its origin. This section followed a very taxing section of Ridge ascent that was a bit too much... the combination added to the descent through the terraced cliffs was way too much. Also, clouds refused to shadow over us!

This is a trail section not to repeat.

The five hikers diverted down yet another ridge/trail that I did not know about (into Dry Canyon). I'd been wanting to check out the canyon running along the west side of that ridge; never occurred to me to hike the ridge. It overlooks hiway 82... constant traffic noise. The traffic activity was even distracting on the ridge we were going down, a canyon further removed. I guess I have to check out the trail, but like this trail on Horse Ridge, the Description will be more to tell people to not hike them; there are better routes.

Lots of off trail winding up and down... first half of the day was all good. Second part was bad.

Energy pattern okay for second day in a row! I still took it easy... routed a new descent off far east end of the Garden Wall, thinking about the potentials for making it mountain bike doable... might work.

Checked out the abandoned road bed behind MNSU, but decided to leave it for another day... finished with laps on the "A"... started the day in light rain, dead air... finished in partly cloudy with light breeze.

11,000' behind schedule for the month... 1,000' per day. That pattern may hold; I may not catch up with the plan but I am logging some great routes. Nearly each hike includes some exploratory sections; still finding great new areas and routes. Cannot complain!

good outing... energy seems to have returned for this semi-exploratory amble up and down that great section of canyons... Ross and I were out by noon, just as the rain hit. I logged a bit extra between showers over on the "A"
