Did the Whiskey Basin 91k on a tremendous saturday. Had nice clouds for a lot of the warmer part of the day. This route linked up a million trails and basically incorporated the entire Prescott Circle Trail around Prescott, starting and finishing at Watson Lake.

My plan was to jog whatever flat and downhill I could and just quickly hike the rest, since that is how I have been moving lately and I wanted to see if I could pull off an ultramarathon this way. It actually worked well and I had plenty of time to spare.

The route itself is beautiful mixing in high desert, juniper and pine country. Really spectacular.

I felt pretty good most of the time. Had some low back pain towards the end. The girls met me at mile 6 and 37 and that was truly a delight.

Did less than an hour at the end by headlamp and that was it. T shirt the whole time and the temps were perfect. Got hot a little in the middle section and got doused with ice water at mile 32 which was heavenly. it clouded up after that for what would have otherwise been the hottest and most exposed part so that was delightful

Skipping the 1.5 miles of road walking between Katahn Rd. and Williamson Valley Rd., today I set out to hike the seven miles from Williamson Valley to Willow Creek. And since I was in Prescott, my mine exploring buddy Prescottstyle (Paul) came along. ⚒️

Longview Trail is basically flat, as it follows the contour line between Pioneer Parkway and a housing development to the north. I’m not sure if it is on Prescott National Forest or Yavapai County land, but Longview ends when the PCT enters the City of Prescott.

The mile-long section of the Prescott Circle Trail through Pioneer Park used to be the Whipple Barracks Target Range. No more boom booms, but it is criss-crossed with old jeep trails. 🚫💣

There’s also three large tunnels under Pioneer Parkway, and it is the third which the PCT passes through. (The first two can be used as shortcuts to Kuebler Park.) Shade is a precious commodity between Williamson Valley and Willow Creek, so the cool tunnel was a welcome minute out of the sun.

The Prescott Circle Trail borders a city truck yard and some more baseball fields, before reaching the simple barbwire fence which encloses Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. The gate had a chain across it, with a “no trespassing”. We didn’t see an alternative, so Paul & I opted for a liberal interpretation of the sign, that it was meant for the Embry-Riddle’s physical plant rather than the PCT itself. 😇

From the gate, the Prescott Circle Trail parallels a Yavapai County equipment yard and the county health clinic, where there is another chained gate. Maybe the “no trespassing” sign is intended for bums & meth addicts?

The Prescott Circle Trail then passes behind a mini-storage and a Subaru dealer to the edge of Willow Creek Rd. The park is literally 250 yds. away, right behind the Honda dealer. But the PCT instead turns north. 😏

After a few more switchbacks, the Prescott Circle Trail arrives at the tunnel under Willow Creek Rd. … Which had an orange reflector traffic barricade across it … and another “no trespassing” sign. Maybe it’s because of the Chinese Lung AIDs?

Along Willow Creek, the Cottonwood Peninsula, and the trail accessing it, were underwater, making the area look more like a mangrove swamp.

When Paul and I arrived at the dog park, my wife was nowhere to be found. Turned out she was waiting for us back at Kuebler Park. No big: Without her shuttle driving, I would not be able to do these hikes. 😘

The final leg of our 58 mile loop around Prescott, started at the Peavine TH in the low 40's.

The low morning sun cast intriguing shadows on the rocks and trees around Watson Lake. The lake was busy with waterfowl of all types. Willow Lake was just as thick with ducks and geese.

We climbed out of Willow Lake, to Emery Riddle and an RC plane doing aerobatics.

The middle section today was a pleasant mix of tall grasses, mixed conifer, rolling hills, and long views.

After lunch we made the final push ending in a gorgeous stand of pines.

It was great catching up after five weeks away from the gang.

Good times gentlemen :y:

We brought the PCT Trail full circle. Today was the 3rd leg Bruce created breaking the PCT into 3 reasonable segments for day hikes. I enjoyed the entire circle. That said this would be the area least appealing to most.

Started out in the first cold weather morning of the season. 'Twas spectacular skirting Watson & Willow lakes. The tail end of Autumn Foliage had the massive cottonwoods screaming y(h)ellow in the low morning sun.

The majority of the hike along Pioneer Pkwy, Williamson Valley Rd and a local neighborhood would unlikely interest the masses. Personally I enjoyed seeing how it connected but wouldn't be jumping for a redo.

We hiked this man club style doing each segment in the direction of the most aeg. Which was an appreciated group tactic to keep me from crying like a baby👶

Thx to B&D for setting up all the necessary shuttles!

Joe suggested the PCT earlier in the year and Bruce and I jumped on board. Bruce and Route Editor broke it into three day hikes for us. This was our third and final section. This one had the most street walking but was still enjoyable with the company I had. The diverse terrain, Joe's singing capabilities and mirthful sense of humor, Bruce's cerebral conversation, and me to keep balance :D, I found hiking the Prescott Circle Trail quite entertaining. Dallin and I have very different capabilities and both did the PCT we were capable of :o  . Even this one I had to do as a slackpacker. My hats off to Dallin and the real PCT.
Another enjoyable day with Joe and Bruce in the Arizona Outdoors... :y:

We hiked West to East thinking there would be less climbing. Parked at Brownlow TH. There is parking at Keubler Field very close to the culvert under Commerce way which would have been nicer since the hike into the start point from Brownlow was on the road shoulder and through some graded construction areas. The culvert, at Keubler field, was good, clear despite recent snow and rain. The first section was behind the City construction/maintenance yard and then the ball park .. not scenic. The trail then entered Embry Riddle private property. That was a nice area. Gentle up and down. Some toe stubbing rocks. Lots of scattered trails, probably the Univ students use all those hiking trails a lot. There were signs posted about a "mastication" project advising staying out. I'm thinking they were constructing a fire break and were doing brush grinding. We managed to take a wrong turn... I think onto an access point behind the County Health services buildings. I think you could access from there, actually. We turned the wrong way onto that access trail which I believe was also marked with the PCT Prescott Circle Trail signs intended to be leading out to PCT from the Co Health services. Plenty of trails to take although, being private property, I assume that the permission is for the PCT only, as marked. Eventually we found our way out to the culvert under Willow Creek Rd on the east end of the trail. That culvert was also nice and clear. All in all, the footing, despite recent precipitation, was reasonably good... decomposed granite soil, not mud. From the culvert (which put us back onto the trail) we followed an open scenic trail around Willow Lake south to the dog park TH. Willow Lake is a birding area and has seasonally migrating Monarchs in the Milkweed at the east/southeast (opposite) end.

Watson Lake Circle Trail should be renamed “Links (not Lynx) Lake Circle Trail”

I did Watson clockwise and Willow counterclockwise. These loops are okay but in both cases the part in the Granite Dells is very cool while the rest is a bit monotonous. I saw very few people on either loop. Weather was great, a bit cool at the beginning but very pleasant later.
