Took the fat bike up to Pima Dynamite this morning with the intention of doing a Rawhide Wash Browns Ranch Road kind of loop. Got a late start, but still rolling off before lunch. Took Rawhide Wash from the parking area, the first section out to Dixileta Road was nice sort of soft singletrack trail. From Dixileta it becomes deep, hoofed out, hell sand. Rode north as far as I could before I gave up and took Rock Tank trail over to Axle Grease. Took Axle Grease north to West Express, all of Stagecoach clockwise out to Cholla Mountain Loop south, Dry Gulch and Corral over to Brown's Ranch Road. I wanted to go east on Brown's Ranch Road, but ended up heading west, I guess it looked like less of a climb, I dunno. Found myself at Powerline #1 and headed south, picked up Hawknest, Hackamore, and Axle Grease back to the trailhead. I guess I lost my mojo today as I was spanked when I got back to the van. Light traffic on the trails today, a few hikers and some mountain bikers.

Posted a lengthy outing on President's Day to Meetup. Surprised by the strong response. 10 am at TH. A diverse and interesting group.

Went smoothly except for 1 trail which was part of the route was now decommissioned. Had to improvise. So we went to Cathedral Rock and followed a couple other trails till we were back on the planned loop.

Still managed to finish with the AEG & mileage I'd provided in the write up. All seemed pleased by the end.

Beautiful morning for a hike. Quite a few hikers out close to the TH, but, as always, the numbers petered out a few miles away. All I'd see was MTB'ers after that. The overcast skies kept things comfortable.

My friend Ted is planning to move to Prescott soon, so I decided to plan a hike nearby with him since we rarely get a chance to hike together anymore. When I first moved to AZ, he was one of my first hiking buddies, so I wanted to take the time to do a local hike at this time of year while the weather is really nice.

I decided to hike in the northern part of the MSP from the Brown's Ranch TH. Pretty easy trails, nice scenery, and Ted hasn't hike there before. We took the Brown's Ranch Road Trail to the Corral Trail, Dry Gulch, Cholla Mtn Loop, Balanced Rock, Watershed, Whiskey Bottle and then Latigo Trails, making a big loop. Along the way we stopped at part of Brown's Ranch and then Cathedral Rock and checked out the views and the grinding holes there.

Weather was chilly for the first 15 minutes, then perfect the rest of the day. Light clouds kept the temperature comfortable. We made very good time since the trails were flat and smooth. Saw mostly bikers, but a few trail runners and hikers as well.

This was my second hike north of the McDowells. Kelly had an old track with two peaks on it that provided a basis for our hike. We altered the hike from the track a couple times. Not unusual for our hikes.
We started hiking not long after first light. It was chilly, but within an hour or two we back down to summer hiking attire. Saw a couple coyotes near the trailhead.
The ascent up little Granite was off trail. Lots of rough granite boulders, catclaw, and other not so friendly brush on the way. We triumphed eventually after taking a more difficult route than necessary.
After descending we were looking over at Browns Peak, so off we went. The trail up to the peak is in good shape and not as steep as I suspected it might be. Good summit views.
Our next target was Cholla Mountain. After checking the time and remaining mileage, we decided to save Cholla and Fraesfield mountains for another day.
The trails here are all in good shape and well signed. Excellent for novice mountain bikers, of which we saw many. Beautiful desert flora and rock formations as well.
Fun hike. Thanks Kelly. :)

john hit me up to hike little granite mountain and cholla mountain in the mcdowell sonoran preserve north
we got going around 0700 or so
chilly temps - upper 30s when we started
bootlegger to the east side of granite mountain
we didn't take the best line on the ascent
our route was better on the descent going off west from the saddle
off trail in the mcdowells is slow going with sticker bushes, loose gravel and bouldering
it's also frowned upon by the preserve
we visited the balanced rock and the amphitheater along cholla mountain loop
i got distracted by brown's mountain, so we decided to hit that peak next
by the time we got back near cholla mountain, we were running into game time
returned the way we came after a visit to cathedral rock
beautiful day for a hike
lots of mountain bikers out, not as many hikers
we'll have to come back for cholla mountain sometime and explore some of the other trails
excellent linkage
thanks lp :)

Oh that Linda does seem to fly up peaks, with or without trails. No wonder she and Kelly get along so well . And how did I end up in this mix :-k . However, in this case, I think I suggested this one ](*,) .

We almost missed our turn for Cone Mountain Summit. Linda led the way up which I appreciated so I could concentrate on just my ascent. It wasn't the easiest of routes as you had to avoid so many different things on the way. The summit was nice and the views impressive. It was VERY windy going up the side but once on top, the wind was almost nil. We took a slightly different route down but eventually hooked up with Kelly's route. As we descended a hawk was trying to get our attention and as always, fun to watch it catch the wave so to speak.

And then it was around the mountain we went trying to decipher where there might be additional routes one could take to the top but Kelly's seemed to be the shortest if anything. We did encounter a few hikers on this side and some trail stewards as well as some bikers. I was having trouble with a small sore my new shoes had caused me on Thurs so I stopped to re-bandage it again. A biker even yelled over to ask if we were okay; wasn't that nice!

And then it was on to Brown's which was more up than from the other side. But I trudged along and tried to keep up with Linda. She sets a nice pace so that's good for me. We finally got up to the saddle but I told her to proceed so I could, once again, change my bandages. They kept falling off :( . This time I used several pieces of tape. When we got back to Brown's Ranch Road and the intersection with Corral, we reviewed my options in light of my heel issue. The bandage was, more or less, staying on so we proceeded on Corral, Dry Gulch and Cholla to get to the Amphitheatre which I wanted Linda to see.

We had a quick lunch and rather than head over to Balanced Rock we took the beautiful Watershed Trail to Chuckwagon. It's extra lush through here. This whole Preserve has so much extra desert flora it's really worthy of more visitation by yours truly. I keep threatening to give a bike a try but as I told Linda, "I'm such a gawker I'm afraid I would crash numerous times."

And then along the Chuckwagon Trail we got to see five hawks all of a sudden fly in our vicinity. We watched them as they landed in various areas and flew around; it was so cool. I'm glad I took as many shots as I did as I did manage to get two good photos. In the distance to the SE I saw extreme haze in the Superstitions; we assume from dust, but it was quite thick. We started walking again and then when we looked north we could see some billowing smoke over by the Seven Springs area. There were a few different small billowy-like plumes. We're hoping it's intentional fire but since it was pretty breezy today, we were a little worried.

And per usual, quite a few bikers on the Chuckwagon Trail as we made our way back to the TH. Linda got to be the first to meet Tonto the Third (III)/MYTONTO 3. We finished our beer (root) and parted company. Thx again Linda, glad you got a couple more peaks. And thx for putting up with me fixing my heel every couple miles.

Met Angela at Brown's Ranch TH at 0830 and we got started. Not as cool as I'd hoped it would be, but a nice breeze. Headed up Upper Ranch, then left on Cone Mountain Trail. Headed offtrail up to the summit of Cone Mountain. Short and steep offtrail. Some loose rocks and slippery decomposed granite, but we managed to stay upright. We spent some time dodging vegetation as well. Views from the top were nice, and surprisingly, no breeze up there.

Once back on the trail, we continued around Cone Mtn, then headed up Brown's Mountain Trail. Angela waited for me at the start of the spur trail to the summit. I went up there real quick, took a few pictures, then headed back down. Nobody else at the summit. From there, we backtracked west and then took Corral Trail east, then Dry Gulch over to Cholla Mtn Loop trail. Lots of nice yucca along these sections of trail.

It was warming up by the time we reached the Amphitheater, so we sat in the shade there while we ate lunch. From there, we headed south on Watershed, then west on Chuckwagon back to the trailhead. Probably the highest concentrations of cactus of the day along those two trails. Along Chuckwagon, we saw 5-6 hawks that circled around us but didn't seem to want to leave the area. The settled in trees and saguaros along the trail and watched us as we took pictures of them. Neat to see.

Nice day, great conversation, and enjoyable to get some easy miles in while hiking through picturesque scenery.

Got my hair done and decided to do a hike over in North Scottsdale since my appt was up in the area. The last two times I hiked out of Brown's TH was Dec 7, 2014 and Dec 16, 2013 so it seemed a good time to finally revisit. Plus Linda and I are supposed to hike in this area on Tue so I wanted to make sure she could handle the peak😏. I also decided to try out my new shoes.

I was astonished as to how cold it is at 60 degrees with a breeze when I got out of Tonto the Third. I actually had to wear my down vest for the hike. This trail system is like the interstate highway (as to its smoothness) except for the climb up to the Summit. On this part of the hike is where I saw the only hikers I would see for the day; about ten. For the next 6 3/4 miles I would not see another hiker; altho I saw over a dozen bike riders throughout off and on.

After coming down from the summit I rounded the mountain to the north side before switching back east to hook up with the Corral Trail. The Corral Trail makes a wide swing to the west and north before heading east and south to hook up with the Dry Gulch Trail. It was really quite beautiful and I ended up taking more photos than I thot. It was such a nice change after my visit to the Superstitions on Tuesday. I was surprised to see so many Soap Tree Yuccas and I do like the gold colored grass. And of course, there are a few tall hillsides and of course the rather large Cholla Mountain. I did see a couple squirrels on my route.

The air was very clear so had good views for most of the afternoon. I took the short Dry Gulch Trail connector to hook up with the Cholla Mtn Loop. I did see a few hikers at a distance up at the Cathedral Rock area. My goal at this point was the Ampie (that's what HAZel called it) Theatre area. It's still a pretty cool place to walk around but the rocks are not very comfortable to sit on so I just re-tied my new shoe. From here it was on to the Watershed Trail which turned out to be quite scenic with all the desert-type flora. It was thick through here. I eventually crossed under the powerlines and then got on the Chuckwagon Trail heading west for the last 1 and 1/2 miles. I was walking into the sun and the breeze seemed to have died down now.

I encountered a few more bike riders and finally arrived back at Tonto III to have our first beer and snack together. Pretty fancy cars at this Trailhead for sure. A flock of fluffy quail walked across the lot; they were cold too. And now for the drive home as it was getting dark.
A nice article about the ranch: https://equitrekking.com/articles/entry ... in-arizona

Went back up to Brown's Ranch TH to hike some new sections of trails I noticed that I didn't hike before. The Broken Spoke has a new section on the west end of it, and there's also a new section of the Chuckwagon Trail just east of Brown's Ranch Road that I hadn't noticed before. I saw that I could incorporate both sections into one 10+ mile hike, so that looked like the way to go.

Brian joined me for this hike, but just for the first 3 miles, then he wanted to hike the Stagecoach Trail that he was supposed to hike with me 2 months ago but got sidetracked on. Those 3 miles went by like nothing. Felt more like barely 2 miles. Talking while you're hiking makes the time and effort go by fast.

My loop started with the southern section of the Chuckwagon Trail, then Watershed, Cholla Loop, Dry Gulch, Broken Spoke, West Express, Basalt Ridge, and Upper Ranch. Nothing special or crazy of note happened. More hikers and bikers encountered as I got closer to the trailhead, as expected. Weather stayed cool the whole time. Slight cloud cover helped with sun protection, but I still put up my hood for the 2nd half of the hike as a precaution.

Belated post. Whenever I come here, I randomly chose a trail that I haven't officially taken credit for. Today it was the Dry Gulch Trail. Got a little bit of a late start and didn't get on the trails until 6:30. I was surprised that the parking lot was as empty as it was at that time. Starting from Brown Ranch TH, I took Brown Ranch Road Trail - Chuckwagon - Balanced Rock - CCW on Cholla Mountain - Dry Gulch - Corral - and then back "home" on the Brown Ranch Road Trail. Love running these trails. The Brown Ranch is more of a get me there trail. A broad swath that heads in a north - south direction, more road than trail. The Chuckwagon is a newer addition to the McDowells and offers a fantastic alternative to the Powerline. It is one of the few trails that covers some distance going in an east - west direction. Nice single track, negligible elevation change. Balanced Rock trail, more of the same. Cholla Mountain I took CCW. This gave me a little more mileage, plus some added elevation. Going CCW, the elevation change is more gradual, but it takes longer than you'd suspect because it is so drawn out. Dry Gulch is a connector trail between Cholla and Corral but it was the impetus behind today's run. Corral Trail is one of the "ok" tracks here in the preserve. It is as much a trail as it is a flat wash. Still the surface is more solid dirt than loose sand so it not too bad for jogging. Brown Ranch ROAD trail is more uphill when going back to the TH, but it is not as bad as it seems. Surprisingly, very few people on the trail this morning (I believe I counted 10), though the parking lot was getting full when I returned. No wildlife, except for a lone rabbit.

My friend Nick joined me to explore some more trails in the Granite Mountain / Brown's Ranch area on Sunday.

In order, I rode: Bootlegger, Granite Mountain Loop, Branding Iron, The Divide, Hawknest, Dove Valley, Maricopa Trail (in Tonto National Forest, to Cave Creek Ranger Station, and then somewhat beyond, out and back), Dove Valley, West Express, Malpais, Hawknest, Buckshot, Corral, Dry Gulch, Cholla Mountain Loop, Balanced Rock, Granite Mountain Loop, Granite Mountain, Black Hill, Monument, 136th St Express, Cowpoke, Granite Mountain Loop, Saddlehorn, Bootlegger.

Nick rode all of the above with me, but returned via a more direct route when we got to the intersection of Granite Mountain Loop & Granite Mountain. My wife joined us for the first part of this ride, but ended up returning early as she whacked her shin just below the knee with a pedal. (It was quite swollen; she returned home to ice it.)

My main goal for the day was to look at more of the Maricopa Trail north of the Preserve Boundary. I rode some of it several weeks ago by myself. This week we rode it all the way to the Cave Creek Ranger Station - there is a spur trail which goes there - and then slightly beyond.

The section of the Maricopa Trail from the northern Preserve boundary to Bartlett Dam Rd is a fairly mellow singletrack. It's also fairly well beaten in, though not quite as well as most of the trails in the Preserve. It's mostly an easy uphill as you work your way north, with several wash crossings along the way. It crosses the powerline road three times. However, it also crosses several other roads and trails which seem to be popular with the OHV crowd. We saw (and heard) several motorcycles while we were out. There are a total of six road crossings (counting the powerline road, but not counting Bartlett Dam Rd) in the last mile of trail south of Bartlett Dam Rd. While there should not be any motorized traffic on the Maricopa Trail, there is definitely motorized traffic on these roads which cross the trail, so it's important to watch for cross traffic.

Nick and I rode to the ranger station in hopes of getting a map, but it wasn't open.

We started riding the next segment that goes northward, but we only rode out perhaps half a mile. In that half mile that we rode, the trail stayed close (even under) the powerlines and had numerous wash crossings, perhaps as many in that half mile as we had encountered during the entire 3.3 mile stretch from the Preserve boundary to Bartlett Dam Rd. These seemed deeper too, and the track was not beaten down enough for me to feel comfortable taking the downhill at speed so that I could coast up the other side.

When we returned to the Preserve, we took Dove Valley to the West Express Trail, which was new to me. West Express felt like an old motorcycle track (which it probably is). It was okay, but I like the new section of Stagecoach (which I rode last week) better. They both intersect with Malpais too. (I haven't ridden West Express south of Malpais yet.) The West Express Trail is more direct (shorter) than the new section of Stagecoach. Stagecoach is, IMO, better constructed and a lot more fun to ride. The other really nice thing about the new segment of Stagecoach is that it provides a bit over five uninterrupted miles of trail - there are no other intersecting trails from where it crosses the powerline road until it terminates/intersects with the Malpais Trail.

Towards the end of my ride, after leaving Nick, I rode north past the Granite Mountain Trailhead on 136th St Express and then took Cowpoke over to Granite Mountain Loop. I rarely ride these trails; in fact, I don't think I've been on them since another friend showed them to me several years ago. Cowpoke definitely goes uphill, but it's a surprisingly gentle grade to get up to Granite Mountain Loop. Cowpoke is also a very scenic trail with interesting rocks and numerous saguaros along the way. I should endeavor to ride it more often.

Just a Sunday afternoon ride with my wife in the Granite & Cholla Mountain areas of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve...

Prior to going out, I looked at the current map and noticed, at the top (north) end of the map, that two "Step-Over Gates" are marked at the boundary with the Tonto National Forest. My goal was to get to the gate just off of Dove Valley Trail and take a look at what's on the other side.

My wife and I rode Bootlegger, Granite Mountain Loop, Branding Iron, and north on The Divide Trail. When we got to High Desert, my wife turned left (west) and rode to the intersection with Broken Spur where she would later meet me.

I continued up The Divide, went left on Hawknest, then right on Dove Valley. I could have turned left on Dove Valley from The Divide Trail, but Hawknest is nicer - it's a singletrack whereas Dove Valley is an old jeep road. Anyway, when I turned onto Dove Valley, I found that there was a pretty well defined path made by mountain bikers; it was better than I expected it to be.

I got to the step-over gate at the Tonto National Forest Boundary and crossed over. I looked at the map posted on a large sign and noticed that the area is riddled with roads and perhaps other paths too. It appears that the area might be popular with the OHV crowd. Once I was done studying the map, I was looking at the various road options in front of me when I noticed a sign for the Maricopa Trail. I followed it for 1.4 miles and turned around just as it was crossing under the power lines for the second time. It's a nice singletrack marked for non-motorized vehicle use. In less than a quarter mile, it went through another step-over gate, though this one has a hinged bar which must be unlatched before you can cross. It then crossed the power line road twice; I think there was a least one other road that it crossed, but I don't know what that (or those) roads are (were). I noticed some spur trails leading to the west; I got a good look at one of them; it was a trail that followed a fence line. As noted earlier, I turned around just as it was crossing under the power lines for the second time. Looking at a map of my track, I see Joy Ranch Rd was due west of where I turned around. This section of the Maricopa Trail was pretty well beaten in, so I think it must have been there for a while; I just didn't know about it. (For some reason, I thought that the Maricopa Trail would continue on from where The Divide Trail meets Hawknest.) Anyway, I plan to explore further sometime soon. I'm wondering if it somehow connects to Spur Cross... that would be quite a ride!

When I got back to the Preserve, I continued on Dove Valley, turned left on Stagecoach, then right on Hawknest. I turned left when I got to Broken Spoke and met my wife where it intersected with High Desert.

We continued on High Desert, turned left (east) on Corral and then turned left (east again) onto Dry Gulch. From the end of Dry Gulch we returned via Cholla Mountain Loop, Balanced Rock, Granite Mountain Loop, Granite Mountain, Black Hill, Turpentine, and 136th St Express.

Update: I found two maps of the Maricopa Trail that may be of interest:

Maricopa and Sun Circle Trails

Spur Cross - Bronco

These maps show that a 1.3 mile gap between the area I explored and the Bronco Trailhead will open in Dec, 2017.

That said... I've hiked some of the Maricopa Trail from Spur Cross while hiking up to Skull Mesa. TR 247 (Cottonwood) is beyond my skill and aerobic capacity as a mountain biker. So riding from Granite Mountain to Spur Cross is probably not in the cards for me.

Followed a route from The_Eagle from June '15. Super busy with lots of bikes due to some event from REI. The trails are super smooth and the miles sort of just melt away; even when you are sick. I had to talk myself into knocking out the Jane Rau trail at the end and almost stepped on a rattler while on it.

Nice hike on some trails in the MSPN area with Ryan and Lauren. Saw our first rattler of the year spotted by Lauren in the third hiker position :o Good for Ryan and I it was on its best behavior. Nice morning hike.

My hiking buddy saw Cholla Mtn on our New Years hike and said why don’t we go up that… Today was the day. Also bagged Brown’s on way back.

The Northern section of the Sonoran Preserve has become my go-to for long runs. I may be able to cover every trail by summer.
