Planned to do Josephine and Hopkins peaks, but didn’t quite turn out that way!

Started from Madera Canyon, plan was to do Josephine first. At Riley Saddle we turned off and got a little ways in before calling it. The brush was insanely thick, no way to make it currently that I could see and I was trying to follow the HAZ track.

So we abandoned that summit attempt and headed for Hopkins, taking Super to Agua Caliente, and at the point where we were closest to the Hopkins road, we took a little, steep, unnamed path straight up to it, then hiked the road to the summit, having lunch on top.

We headed down the summit road a short distance then bushwhacked down the steep mountainside to rejoin the Agua Caliente. There was nothing really to follow there, though we did stumble onto game trails a couple of times for a little ways which helped. We then headed down Agua Caliente to Vault Mine Trail to Old Baldy, back the short distance down to the trailhead.

Weather was perfect, and we saw a number of deer and some birds. Great but tiring day!

The Seven Rita Challenge sounds like it might involve a lot of tequila, so I opted for a different name.

Summits north to south along the range starting with McCleary, 88 Mac, Pine, Rice, Ian, Wrightson, and Josephine. I was pushing to add Jack and Hopkins, but apparently 10s had reached his 10-day aeg and mileage goals already, so we headed back down via Old Baldy and called it a day a little early.

Other than McCleary I don't know if the other peaks have names, why they're considered peaks at all, or why they have the colloquial names that they have. But the names show up on triplogs here from time to time, so somebody seems to have invented something at some point.

All told, there were 7 bumps. Each had at least 2 registers. Some were signed by the same people. Repeatedly. Some had witty musings. Some had politics. Some had less witty musings about political musings. Others had a name and a date; a novel concept.

McCleary: With the upper lot surprisingly full at our pre-7am start, we decided to avoid the early Baldy crowd and head north first. Didn't realize Pipeline wouldn't be marked and missed the turn by a few yards before correcting. Sylvester Spring was full of clear, cold water, and producing a surprising quart+/min. This drainage was surprisingly pleasant with some monster old Sycamores.

The climb up to Kent Spring along the 157 was wake-me-up steep. Early morning shade and temps still in the 50s was helpful, but there was still some sweat and burn. A trio of hikers were resting at the very dry Kent Spring, and would be our only biped sighting until afternoon.

Four Springs Trail might be the nicest in the range. What a treat! We took a brief breath-catcher and checked out the view from the point just west of Shovel Saddle before continuing on to the saddle at the base of McCleary.

Unsure of what this route would be like, we were pleased to find a reasonably-well worn route up and over to the first of our high-point breaks on the day.

88 Mac: With oddly-named point 8853 next on our list, we scoped the terrain across the saddle and decided to make a direct approach rather than continuing on the trail past Armour Spring and dropping down to the Crest. This is some very steep terrain, climbing about 700 feet in half a mile, but was mostly in a stand of ponderosa and some nicely spaced scrub oak.

Pine: From 88 Mac we continued south along the Rita ridgeline toward the next highpoint, briefly clipping the Crest Trail for a few yards near the saddle between the two. This ascent was again a bit steep, though only about 400 feet. Now on the east side of the crest, the mid-June sun was baking down on us, but the forecasted strong wind kept the low-70s temp feeling like the low 70s!

Rice: Next up was Rice, which after dropping down a bit we overshot on the climb back up. Here we found our 12th glass jar on the day, and I continued to add to my collection of business cards. Where's JJ's Amex when you need it?

Ian: Next up was Ian, which involved another slight overshoot after dropping down to the Crest Trail and cutting through a nice grove of post-fire aspen growth. This one seems to get a little more visitation, and might qualify as an actual peak by those list sites. But there was no sign of a defined route or cairns to mark the trail exit. No matter, this area is not well-vegitated and travel is not obstructed.

Wrightson: After discussing making a direct assault on Baldy, we opted instead for the traditional route via the trail, passing by a pair of hikers taking a break at the saddle. My thermometer sat in the sun for a bit and the temp briefly notched 80 before returning to 73 when shaded. A fierce gust of wind hit us on the switchbacks below the peak, but the summit itself had only a light breeze.

Josephine: While snacking on Wrightson, I covered the descent options and while I normally wouldn't consider the Super Loop on a sunny summer day, the breeze was doing good work negating the sun, so we opted to head down around the backside to hit up Josephine too. I was quickly reminded what an awful experience this is, snaking through prickly brush and then trying to find the best of the undefined routes that make the final steep loose climb to the summit.

Here, I finished the last of my water, taking time to cool off in the wind. Carrying a 5th liter today would have been helpful. Perhaps the strong wind and subsequent evaporation was a factor in the miscalculation today? Heading off the peak we found a better route. Or at least it was better going downhill. I'm going to cross this one off my list for a while.

The traverse around to Josephine Saddle went quickly, but was also the first time on the day that it was a little bit warm in the sun. Luckily, the breeze kicked up and some clouds provided occasional shade. After a quick snack and decision to skip Jack and Hopkins we made quick work going down Old Baldy, passing by other humans number 6 and 7 before arriving back at the now-empty parking lot. The 84 temp at Madera quickly headed to 100 as we reached Green Valley.

The big day necessitated a DQ stop at Picacho on the way home, and reminded me why JJ does this, and questioned why I don't do it more!

Fun day. I would do this again, but not with Josephine. Maybe Jack and Carrie Nation instead though.

Chumley and I left the valley at 4:45AM headed for Madera Canyon, and we were on the trail before 7AM with comfortable temps in the low 70s and some stray clouds hanging around Wrightson. There were more cars in the lot than expected, but the trails were surprisingly quiet. Chums had drawn up a loop with a variety of peaks we could decide to add on as we went, and we started clockwise with a short stint on Super Trail before starting the steep climb up Pipeline/Kent Spring Trails.

Lots of shade on the way up, and Sylvester Spring had a full spring box and a steady flow of water from the pipes. We passed a group of three near Kent Spring that warned us about unmaintained trails and some bushwhacking on our route, but we never found that to be the case. The wind picked up as we approached Shovel Saddle, and we went out to an overlook nearby before continuing on to McCleary, the first peak of the day and a new one for both of us. There was a good social trail with minimal brush all the way, and with some minor scrambling, we were on top. The register had quite a few HAZ names (including some repeat entries), and we added ours before taking off.

Next up was Peak 8853 (88 Mac), and we decided to take a direct shot up the steep north side rather than circling around on Four Springs/Crest Trails and approaching from the flatter E/SE side. The flat summit was covered in dry grass, and we found another register up there (with entries back to 1993), took a short break, then followed the ridge down to Crest and walked ~10 yards on the trail before leaving it to start the climb up to the unnamed peak that Chumley had seen referred to as Pine somewhere. Surprise--another register, which referred to it as "Ridgepoint 9040".

We scrambled down the SE side and continued along the ridgeline over to Rice Peak (another register there), then stayed mostly off-trail along the ridge over to Ian, where we took another break. The register I'd placed in 2023 was next to a redundant second register, which we consolidated into one jar before heading down to Crest Trail. The stretch of peaks along that ridgeline was a lot of fun, with nice views of Wrightson and Hopkins and some continued clouds near the summit.

We saw one group leaving Baldy Saddle on our way down, and we passed another taking a break there, then had solitude all the way up to and on top of Wrightson, making that my first visit to the peak that wasn't crowded with people. There were some strong wind gusts on the way up, but it was calmer and very comfortable on top. We took a longer break at the summit and talked about our options to finish off the loop, ultimately deciding on the longer return with a hike up to Josephine Peak.

We enjoyed the easy on-trail hiking down to Riley Saddle, then a steep, brushy half mile up to Josephine Peak involved a lot of loose footing near the summit. We took another break at the top and added our names to yet another register, then headed back down to Riley Saddle, taking a slightly more direct route down with some controlled sliding. From there, it was all downhill trail miles, and we made good time with one more break at Josephine Saddle before closing the loop on Old Baldy Trail back to a much emptier parking lot.

Enjoyable day, and by far the longest hike I've done in the Wrightson area. Great weather, some interesting clouds, and a fun mix of on- and off-trail with a combination of familiar and new areas. We ended up hiking to a total of seven peaks along that loop, completing the "Seven Rita Challenge" that isn't really a thing...or wasn't until today. I guess the logical next challenge is the Nine Rita with the addition of Jack and Hopkins :). This was the first time I've seen seven registers in one day, or double digits if we count the repeat registers on some of those peaks...though the definition of "peak" has to be used loosely for some of those. Regardless, I'm lucky I didn't get a hand cramp from signing so many. On the way home, we concluded a fun day with a stop at the DQ near Picacho for some dipped cones in honor of JJ.

I’ve had my eye on this for a while. I unexpectedly had enough time to make the drive, so decided to give it a shot. I got a late start though, which definitely wasn’t good. The Roundup parking lot was completely full at 9am on a Saturday, and I had to go round three times before I got lucky as someone pulled out.

Old Baldy was predictably clear. Saw lots of hikers heading down, and only one going up. About halfway up there was a deer on the trail, completely comfortable and much more interested in munching grass over yielding to hikers. It finally retreated when a couple with a dog approached from the opposite direction.

Upper Super was much nicer than I remembered, at least for the first mile or two, as it somehow manages to be nicely forested and shady while providing lovely views.

The scrub oak throughout was looking mighty brown and crispy.

At Riley Saddle the fine, manicured trail was done. It’s a bushwhack to Josephine Peak from there.

From reading other triplogs it sounded like the bushwhacking wouldn’t be that bad. I’m not super experienced with bushwhacking, but I can say there were lots of bushes to whack. Mostly oak, some pine, and lots of stickery things that like to lodge in flesh (or pants). I did a much better job route finding on the way back.

Not being super experienced I definitely took my time with route finding, so I moved slowly. I did pretty ok until I got to the base of the peak. There were cairns marking the route for what I presume was the original trail, which headed east. I tried following them but it petered out quickly into a fairly steep, overgrown slope. The official route looked to be a free-for-all near vertical scramble. I picked my way around and it became clear that the final push to the summit would take some time that I didn’t have. It was already after 1pm and I hadn’t had lunch yet, and I needed to be back to the car around 4. So I sat on a log, admired the view of Wrightson whilst eating lunch, and made my way back to more civilized trails.

I made good time, taking Super down not because I like Super, but because I like the area around Madera Spring and I knew it would be cool and shady on a hot day.

Sprung Spring is broken, with no more filler pipe. Wonder what happened there?

Madera Spring was pretty sad, too. No flow, just some shallow pools full of bugs.

Spurned today, I’ll have to try again to summit Josephine another day… another hour should do it.

Since I’ve done Wrightson summit a couple times, we decided to check out Josephine this time. There was only one small section of bushwhacking that I considered rough and it was because we didn’t take the same route back to the main trail and had to cut across to retrace the last steps. Otherwise, not as bad as I thought the off trail section would be.

My dad suggested going from west to east, volunteering the shuttle, so why not? Josephine Peak and the complete upper Super Trail plus were added on a whim after pausing at the Wrightson summit for a bit. Every trail today was in great shape, even the more wild east Gardner Canyon side. Josephine is a scrappy, not really a gimme peak with some annoying bushwhacking. There were a few fresh bear turds near the summit and of course, a bunch of ladybugs. My descent was better than the ascent route. Only one other hiker today drew my attention after passing her the second time on the Super Trail. She was training for a fifty mile ultra distance and suggested she was doing Wrightson twice today. I wished her luck for her fourth try on completing a fifty and we went on our ways. The Santa Rita may be somewhat over hyped, but understand now why Tucsonans enjoy and love it.

I finally got out and did some hiking around Tucson again. After being in Texas and New Mexico with hikes that didn't have a lot of Elevation gain I had to see if I could still do it. I chose Josephine Peak in the Santa Rita Mountains because it is one of the few trails in the Santa Rita's I haven't done. I went up to Josephine saddle via the Old Baldy Trail and returned on the Super trail. I took the super Trail back not because I love that trail but because I wanted to get over 10 miles in on this hike. I have never seen a trail where they have done everything they can to avoid a little climbing, the only thing super about this trail is it's length. The Super Trail from Josephine Saddle on around the south side of baldy is starting to get a bit overgrown, I guess not too many others like it either.

Josephine Peak Trail no longer exists after the 2005 fire. There is a notice on the trail sign at Riley Saddle where the Josephine Peak trail splits off from the Super Trail that basically tells you you're on your own and good luck. There are a few rock cairns along the way that tell you the trail pretty much follows along the ridge to the peak. I followed the ridge all the way up to the peak and I think that was a mistake. I ended up leaving my pack about .1 miles below the peak to scramble up without them. There is a route on HAZ that shows the route leaving the ridge just before the peak to avoid the rock scramble.

Started the hike in Madera Canyon about 0615 and finished around noon. Temps were in the mid 60's in the morning and probably in the low 80's by noon. Monsoon cloud buildup also helped. Josephine relieved me of my MARPAT shirt that was strapped to my pack, I was too tired to go back and look for it, even if I could retrace the route I took up. I have three more and that one was getting a bit thin in places.

Wanted to get Wrightson and Josephine and added in Jack Mountain for good measure. Won't be doing any long hikes next week with family in town, so I wanted to get the most bang for my buck.

Started up Old Baldy at 5am. Second car showed up as I finished the long walk up the parking lot. Went straight up Old Baldy to the summit. The ascent is as gradual and relentless as I remembered. Made it up in two hours. Views were hazy, especially north and east.

Came down from the summit as the clouds pulled away. The whole walk from Baldy Saddle to Riley Saddle was sunny and warm. Passed an older couple from Green Valley by Baldy Saddle. I hope that I'm still able to summit Wrightson at their age.

Lot of bear scat on Super before Riley Saddle. At Riley Saddle the Nogales Ranger Dist. has put up a few orange signs saying that since the Florida Fire in 2005 no trail repairs have been made except unsanctioned trailwork, for which there is a price to pay. The signs say expect a crosscountry bushwhack. There is a use trail to the summit that is easier to follow on the way down than up. Lots of deadfall, and what trail there is is overgrown. Pretty much as advertised. Slow going. Climbed up a little chute on the outcropping before the peak, and at the top there was a small cave. Not sure how bears work, but I figured they use it at least to hibernate. In the summit register there was a group in the winter who wrote that they saw a bear hibernating in the cave, so that settles that.

Super trail and back saw no one until Josephine Saddle. Headed up Agua Caliente to Jack Mountain. Took a ridge up, should've waited for the spur. On top there were thousands of ladybugs, which made up for the lack of views.

Took Super back from Josephine and passed two groups of hikers. Never seen so few people on a trip up Wrightson. Six cars in the lot at the finish.

Nice trail until the turn off towards Riley Saddle. Then the "trail" is rather overgrown, and even absent in places. But it's not to hard to route find by just sticking to the ridge.

Fun day hike on Wrightson. We started under partly cloudy skies and a breeze. Enjoyed a light sprinkle of rain followed by graupel on the way to Josephine Saddle. Made the side trip to Josephine. The 'trail' starts off great and is in much better shape. Not nearly as brushy. A few new cairns. Dallin insisted on going up and over the rock faces. Took a nutrition break atop Josephine then back down the same way. Cruised on up Wrightson. Enjoyed the views. Chatted with a local on the way back down and finished up at a busy TH. A few wildflowers in the lower parts. Mostly dry out there. Bellows spring was flowing.

The weather forecast called for a minimal chance of monsoon storms in southeastern AZ today, so a trip to Wrightson was in order. We got started just after 7:00am, and headed up Super Trail. Shady and cool up to Josephine Saddle, with running water everywhere. We stayed on Super Trail after the saddle and took it around to Riley Saddle, and made the side trip to Josephine Peak. Plenty of brush, and some steep, scrambly spots, but following the ridge to the summit is pretty straightforward. We had a late breakfast/early lunch at the summit, while joined by thousands of ladybugs. Thousands. We then headed back down, and continued on Super Trail up to Baldy Saddle. From Baldy Saddle, we headed up to the Wrightson summit, where I surprised that there were no other hikers. None at all the entire time we were up there, and we actually didn't see anyone else until we were well back down Old Baldy Trail. We took a snack break on Wrightson, enjoyed the views, then headed down Old Baldy Trail. The hike down Old Baldy was uneventful, and seemed to go by quickly. Great hike, with perfect weather, and surprisingly few people out on the trails.

This was a fun hike. These trails are built perfectly and in great condition. Cool, shaded and wet up until the off-trail to Josephine. Ridge walking is always enjoyable. This one gets a little scratchy. I survived in shorts, but the more comfort minded hiker will want pants. Plenty of green vegetation and loose soil from recent rains. Even a waterfall down below that could be heard almost from the summit. Well worth the extra effort. We enjoyed a nutrition break and stirred the swarm of ladybugs before heading back to the trail. Spotty cloud coverage kept us comfortable all day. Lots of flowers out right now and every spring was flowing. We made it to the Wrightson summit and had just as much solitude as on Josephine. Great views all around. By the time we got back down to the saddle, we'd seen more deer than people. Cruised on down Old Baldy and back to the TH. Perfect day for this one and the weather cooperated all afternoon.

Great day to be in the Ritas!

Saw three bears, one albino rattlesnake just below the peak, puffy clouds, a nice breeze, and surprisingly few people. Tough to ask for a better day!

Summited Josephine on the way up. Signs of an old trail exist, but it's an overgrown, scratchy struggle in other places and gets steep. Was happy to get it done early as it may have been a bit warm later in the day.

Following Linda resulted in a snake sighting  ... it was very light colored with minimal or nonexistant markings. I actually wouldn't have guessed rattlesnake until it rattled. Very weak and high-pitched, as it quickly slithered off the trail and disappeared in the grass before I could get a picture.

Shortly after discussing my life-altering bee sting experience as a 5-year-old, I was stung by a bee for the first time in as long as I can remember. Not a big deal until I got home. Will see how it looks tomorrow, but for now, it's swollen and very sore.

At 2 hours from home, I could see myself doing this one more often. :)

I was wanting to get out of Phoenix for the day, but didn't want to deal with the Flagstaff or Payson traffic, so south was a the way to go. We got started a little before 7am, and luckily Super trail was shaded most of the way to the saddle. After the saddle, it was mostly sun, but the temps were still nice. I must have cleared a few hundred spiderwebs off the trail in the first five miles, and was constantly brushing them off my face and arms, and even picked a few webs out of my eyes and mouth--but I'm okay with that as long as I don't have to deal with an actual spider.

The side trip to Josephine was a bit of work. Very brushy in places, and in a few spots, I had to basically fall forward with all my body weight to push through the branches--and hope to catch myself before falling completely down. Even though I wore pants, I got plenty of thorns in my legs. Getting to the top was a steep climb, but worth it. The summit is nice and grassy, with nice views all around. The register was missing anything to write with; and I didn't have any pens to leave behind since I just cleaned out and washed my pack last week.

Once back on the main trail, it was easy going. Lots of wildflowers starting to bloom, and everything was green. We took a quick snack break at the Baldy Saddle, then headed up to the Wrightson summit. Almost immediately, there was a small rattlesnake on the trail, blending in with the rocks. I saw it as soon as it moved, and about a second before it rattled, but it took off too quickly to get a picture. At the summit, we took a long break, enjoyed the great weather at the top, then headed back down.

The trip down Old Baldy went by quickly, but the last mile was pretty warm. I finished off my three liters of water about a tenth of a mile before we got back to the parking lot. We saw three bears-mom & two cubs-as we were leaving the parking area, which was a nice way to finish off a great day.

I've knocked off most of the 'big gun' peaks in the Santa Ritas: Mt. Wrightson, Mt. Ian, 88 Mac, Mt. Hopkins… rounding out the 'fab five' in terms of tallest Santa Rita peaks, [at least according to the 2012 SAHC Peak List], is Josephine Peak, which I had yet to pay a visit to. Last December, I heard some intimidating reports of hardcore hiking acquaintances get 'brushed out' or 'cliffed out' while attempting this peak. It was intimidating [back then] but at the same very appealing if you know what I mean.

This summer after first bagging Mt. Hopkins, I decided to head down from the Agua Caliente Trail and bag Mt. Wrightson via the upper Super Trail, since it was one of the few trails relatively near the Madera Canyon Trailhead that I hadn't done. En route to Wrightson, I came upon a saddle and a smaller metal sign that said, "Riley Saddle" [and underneath that], "Josephine Peak :next: " [the arrow pointing in the direction of the peak]. A small overgrown route leading toward the peak was visible for all but a few feet before becoming enveloped in brush. I was VERY tempted to go after peak that day but, [trying to work on my weakness (distance!) and get in 18-20 miles before the sun went down], I decided that Josephine Peak would have to sit on my bucket list a little while longer.

Today, I finally knocked it off. The weather / conditions could not have been more perfect. Originally I was planning to go after another peak near Tubac; but short on time after having overslept and not wanting to deal with any drama trying find trailheads or cliffing out on one of these remote peaks whose names don't even come up on HAZ, I decided Josephine Peak, [which looked to be a pretty straight shot from Riley Saddle], would be a better choice. Not to mention, the Santa Ritas are like my 'backyard mountains' and I can get to the TH blindfolded. And at over 7,000', the temps would not be high enough to worry about snakes. In fact, over 90% of the terrain I covered from the Madera Canyon TH to Josephine Peak are still covered in snow; definitely more than I bargained for but luckily not enough to make the adventure unpleasant. It was actually very beautiful and my knees were definitely less beat up with the added cushion.

Ironically, the most drama filled part of the adventure was picking up the wrong trail once I hit Josephine Saddle. I decided to do for time up Old Baldy to Josephine Saddle, [which I've been using for almost 3 years now to gauge how good [or bad] of shape I'm in]. Without ever exerting 'race pace' or even 'interval pace' effort, I clocked in at 48:10; not too bad from what I've been told. Still in 'haul pumpkin' mode, I proceeded to barge down what I thought was the upper Super Trail [after all, I've only been by J-Saddle a gazillion times…].

A few minutes later when I passed by McBeth Springs and the trail started to lose elevation, it occurred that I had accidentally hopped on the Temporal Gulch Trail instead of the upper Super Trail back a J-Saddle. Not wanting to waste time backtracking, I consulted the topo on Route Scout and quickly identify an 'exit spot'… let's just say, all of the elevation I'd lost on the Temporal Gulch Trail, [plus that which I should've gained had I taken the Super Trail] was almost instantly regained!

After my off-trail elevator ride from Temporal Gulch to the upper Super Trail, the rest of the way was pretty much smooth sailing, which I've detailed in the Description. The only other notable thing: after bagging the peak and returning down the upper Super Trail, I came across a rock outcropping on the side of the trail with literally 20-30 lizards in sight at once! I've seen this kind of thing before along various trails / various parts of the Santa Ritas but prior to this, the most I've ever counted at once was 15-20; this time was 25-30, [and at a time of year that I least expected to see them]. It was an interesting site to say the least!

Thunder was in the sky. Dark clouds loomed and then it sprinkled on Mountain cooling it down to an awesome 65 degrees.

I set out to Hike up to Josephine Peak today. I see it all the time on the way up to Mt. Wrightson and I often think about heading over to it but never do. Well today I had a date with Josephine and it turned out to be a good one. At first I thought it was going to be a real challenge getting through the brush but it wasn't bad at all.

After Josephine I decided to head up to the top of Mount Wrightson and then take the Old Baldy trail back down to the car.

This was a great hike and I got lucky it didn't storm on me. It was happening all around the area but only sprinkles on the Santa Ritas while I was there.
