Hiked an 11 mile loop from the Brown's Ranch TH starting out by hiking up to the summit of Brown's Mountain while it was still cool. After the summit the loop was Hawknest, Stagecoach, High Desert, Corral, Brown's ranch road. Best views were up at the summit, haven't been up there in about a decade.

no wildlife seen, but I was accosted by a bee at the overlook just below. Lucky enough to not get stung. Saw 2 other hikers on the way to the summit and the rest was bikers. Got a bit warm towards the end but not bad. The higher elevation in this area is just enough to make it bearable at the worst time of year if you get an early start.

Took the fat bike up to Pima Dynamite this morning with the intention of doing a Rawhide Wash Browns Ranch Road kind of loop. Got a late start, but still rolling off before lunch. Took Rawhide Wash from the parking area, the first section out to Dixileta Road was nice sort of soft singletrack trail. From Dixileta it becomes deep, hoofed out, hell sand. Rode north as far as I could before I gave up and took Rock Tank trail over to Axle Grease. Took Axle Grease north to West Express, all of Stagecoach clockwise out to Cholla Mountain Loop south, Dry Gulch and Corral over to Brown's Ranch Road. I wanted to go east on Brown's Ranch Road, but ended up heading west, I guess it looked like less of a climb, I dunno. Found myself at Powerline #1 and headed south, picked up Hawknest, Hackamore, and Axle Grease back to the trailhead. I guess I lost my mojo today as I was spanked when I got back to the van. Light traffic on the trails today, a few hikers and some mountain bikers.

Second time hiking out here this winter. We hiked further north than I had been before. Lots of very smooth trails. A bit of frost early on, warming up nicely as the morning unfolded.
We saw three deer, lots of bunnies and birds, a dozen mountain bikers but no hikers.
Good day. Thanks Kelly. :)

I need to start catching up on chores at home, so I opted for a local hike, which was still over an hour drive to the TH :-k . Anyway, I started from the ATV trailhead at the north end of 136th St, which serves just as well as a TH for hiking into this north part of the MSPN. I did a loop of 136th St Express-Hawknest-Stagecoach-High Desert-Renegade-Dove Valley-Barb's Trail-136th St. Just over 12 miles. Made great time since the trails are level and smooth. Started at 6:30am in the dark and took the headlamp off before the first mile was completed.

I saw 2 deer as I turned off the Hawknest Trail onto the Stagecoach Trail, but they never stopped at all so I wasn't able to get a pic. Then on the Renegade Trail I saw a javelina and had the same issue. Lots of hawks along the Hawknest Trail, I guess that's why it's called that.

Not much traffic on the trails at all, which was kind of surprising. I saw one other hiker ahead of me on the High Desert Trail, and about 4 bikers.

The ATV TH has some vehicles parked when I got there, but nothing crazy. 2 hunters were field dressing what I think was a dove. Didn't notice a shotgun, which would be the typical tool to harvest one with 8-[ .

Met up with Doug, Bruce, Jane, and Detrich to do a Bagel Bunch group ride from Pima Dynamite trailhead this morning. Lots of hikers and bikers out on the Browns Ranch trails this morning, especially around Granite Mountain, which is my favorite hiking loop. Great way to finish off an epic year!

Took the Cutthroat out for a gravel bike ride at Pima Dynamite. Saw some hikers nearby to Pima Dynamite trailhead and Browns Ranch trailhead. Didn't encounter any other bikers out on the trails. Stopped by Cathedral Rock for a photo op. Super fun fast flowy loop!

Friday light traffic got me up to Pima Dynamite trailhead at Brown's Ranch in a reasonable amount of time this morning, glad I made the effort! Few cars in the parking lot and even fewer people out on the trails. Stopped to chat with Lorraine who's returning to England after 20 years in Germany and the United States. A cool breeze complemented the fast and flowy trails, only some cloud cover could have made it better. Had the suspension locked out for most of the ride, should have taken the gravel bike, next time for sure.

Been sick the last 2 days & still recovering. However, these trails are fairly flat and I surprised myself by keeping a decent pace through this.

Saw many mtn bikers but no hikers. Temps were perf. More of a laid back outing than many of the others.

Judy and I parked in a neighborhood North of the Scottsdale McDowell Sonoran Preserve and walked a power line road for about 1/4 mile until we hit the Stagecoach Trail junction. We took it right or West for a few miles then turned around. As excepted we saw only a few mountain bikers.

Finally got a chance to head out here and hike the Owl Hoot Trail. Since it's so remote, it makes for a long hike, so I wanted to wait until the gates are open when I get there and not start later, like after 7am.

Very few people in the parking lot or at the building when I started. Saw one biker early on for the first 7+ miles. Took Brown's Ranch Road to Hawknest and Stagecoach, then took the Owl Hoot Trail out to the Legend Trail Parkway. I didn't feel like taking the same way the whole way back, so I decided to walk along the Legend Trail Parkway down to where the Malpais Trail comes out, then I took that back to the Stagecoach. I then made the choice to take the Basalt Ridge and Upper Ranch Trails back to the trailhead instead of Brown's Ranch Road. I was hoping I might see a little less traffic along that route, but it was pretty busy. The last 2.5 miles I saw more people than the rest of the morning up to that point. Parking lot was also packed when I finished.

Saw a hawk sitting on a boulder on the Malpais Trail just after I got on it from the Legend Parkway. Then later on the other end of the Malpais Trail, I saw a big nest in a saguaro that I hadn't seen on my way out, which was being guarded by a mama hawk.

I switched back to an old pair of boots that are getting to the end of their usefulness, but have still been good for longer distance hikes compared to my older Merrells. Not anymore. My feet were hurting the last few miles of this hike, and there were a few expected blisters when I changed shoes at the end. Nothing too bad. My time was really great starting off, but I got slowed down quite a bit at the end. Oh well.

Belated post. Did a hike with Darthstiller out in the MSPN. I had missed hiking with him a month earlier so it was nice to hook up with him. We had slightly different plans on the loops that we wanted to do, but our trails aligned for the first few miles. Together we hit Chuckwagon, Powerline Rd#1 (briefly), Watershed, and then a part of the Cholla. It was good to reconnect with Chris and get an update on his hiking, family and the Steelers. From there, I continued on to hit the Stagecoach, (which was the trail that I missed out on with Chris the previous month). Long trail, but perfect for jogging.......or biking or hiking. :) After that I used the Buckshot, Corral and Brown Ranch Rd Trails to get me back to the TH. Good company and great trails made for nice combo hike/run.

I've been wanting to hike the newer section of the Stagecoach Trail that's in the upper northwest corner of the preserve. It's pretty remote to get to, so it's a longer hike, making it a better idea to wait until the weather is cooler to do it. I was thinking it would be more like 15+ miles, but it was only just over 13. The weather was perfect the whole time. The trails here are smoother, so I could make much better time than along the rockier trails I've been hiking recently. I got done in about the same amount of time it normally takes me to do 10 miles or less.

From the Brown's Ranch TH, I took the Brown's Ranch Road Trail to Hawkest, Malpais, then Stagecoach. At the end of the Stagecoach Trail, I headed south a bit on the Powerline Road Trail, and headed back on the West Express Trail, which I think used to be the Axle Grease Trail. Not sure why they changed the name. Coming back on the West Express, a plane was overhead flying loop de loops and making a lot of noise. When I looked up, I could see he was leaving trails to show off the loops.

Brian mt98dew was supposed to try to make it with me for this hike. I thought I wouldn't get to the TH until 6:45am, but I was way early and there before the gate even opened. I kept expecting to see him catching up to me, but he never did. Back at the TH he left a note on my car saying he took an unexpected route. It can be confusing getting to the Stagecoach Trail knowing which turns to take at several trail junctions. Also got a note from Brian SunRay, so the HAZ community was out in force today.
