Nice loop to both Wrightson and Ian with the Desperados. A Twin Spotted was on the trail a couple hundred feet below the summit of Wrightson. It's obvious some bears wander the Cave Canyon Trail.

My dad suggested going from west to east, volunteering the shuttle, so why not? Josephine Peak and the complete upper Super Trail plus were added on a whim after pausing at the Wrightson summit for a bit. Every trail today was in great shape, even the more wild east Gardner Canyon side. Josephine is a scrappy, not really a gimme peak with some annoying bushwhacking. There were a few fresh bear turds near the summit and of course, a bunch of ladybugs. My descent was better than the ascent route. Only one other hiker today drew my attention after passing her the second time on the Super Trail. She was training for a fifty mile ultra distance and suggested she was doing Wrightson twice today. I wished her luck for her fourth try on completing a fifty and we went on our ways. The Santa Rita may be somewhat over hyped, but understand now why Tucsonans enjoy and love it.

I noticed Mt. Wrightson on our recent AZT trips this last winter. I hiked it 15 years ago and have nice memories of it. Getting on the kick for more AEG hikes, I decided to try this one again from the east side, including trails I hadn't done before. Gardner Canyon is right next to the AZT so that was an interesting new approach to the peak.

Wally was in right away, he's like Mikey from the Life cereal commercials. Brian was in when I described the hike to him. I made a point of doing that as we approached the Apache Springs TH for AZT4 as Wrightson loomed above. the timing of me saying "I want to go hike up THERE" as we turned the corner and saw the peak had him hooked. he was in. : wink :

Brian drove himself to the Apache Springs TH and from there I drove him and Wally to the Cave Canyon TH at the end of Gardner Canyon Road. I hadn't been to the end of that road before so none of were sure what to expect. Turns out there are 2 stream crossings and a few bumpy sections but nothing real bad. Getting to the TH was pretty easy.

The trail starts out with gradual grades with a few level spots and then gets gradually steeper. After the recent hikes up Hieroglyphic Canyon and Picketpost, this was a piece of cake. The higher we got the trail got steeper here and there, but not too bad. A few level spots gave some breathing breaks.

at the junction of the Super Trail and the old Baldy Trail, the trail got very steep and the elevation at 8500'+ made breathing a chore. the key to hiking this last part to the peak is to not look up. The closer you get, the farther away it seems like you are to getting there. This section of trail was also the busiest. We had several people on their way down or we were getting passed by other hikers. At least I was.

At the peak Brian and Wally were off to the side having lunch and talking. I sat on the wall at the peak and started my lunch, soon to be joined by the throng of the lunch rush right behind us. We soon started to make our way back down.

Once we were off the Old Baldy Trail, there was only one other hiker on the Super Trail just below the junction (the Super Trail circles the peak about 1K' below). After that, we saw a dad with his 2 kids near the Link Trail. Wally said he saw some horse riders at the lower section hours before Brian and I got there.

The views at the top were phenomenal, glad I did this one again and glad I took a different route. Hiking above 9K' is like being in another dimension once you're past 50, but in a cool way. The hike back down was obviously much easier, but at the end the wear and tear on the legs started to seep in a bit.

Chris wanted some AEG and I haven't hike Wrightson for 8 years so this was good. We met Brian on the way to the trailhead and got started in the cool temps. There was plenty of shade on the trail and a breeze so I thought I might need a jacket but the sun higher up kept it pleasant. Brian likes the uphill and he cruised ahead as the air got thinner and the trail got steeper. Gardener Canyon trail was a nice steady incline so I knew I could cruise on the hike down. The final push to the summit had me light headed or it could have mushrooms. We stopped on the peak to refuel and it got a little crowded while we were there. The hike down was peaceful and I saw two horse riders who said they did a loop up Cave trail and back down Gardener Canyon trail. It warmed up on the hike down but the breeze and shade kept me cool.

Love doing new trails! Not sure if I ever would have gotten a chance to experience this one if Chris hadn’t invited me. I would have described the road back to the TH a little bit differently than Chris. Nice TH, there was a brook babbling off to the side. However, there was only enough parking for 3-4 cars.

We got on trail around 8am. First .5 miles was a trail called Link Trail. Basically a road with one stream crossing and some minor elevation gain that got us to a gate and the beginning of the Gardner Canyon Trail. The Gardner Canyon Trail started off as a continuation of the Link Trail. A road with a couple of stream crossings and some mild elevation gain. The roads were nice because it allowed for side by side walking and easy conversation. At around 1 mile we pass through an open fence and the trail transitions from a dual track to a single track. The trail climbs gradually for about .3 miles before turning south and starting the more serious ascent toward Wrightson Peak. For .7 miles the trail incline varies from mild to moderate offering occasional patches of shade with quite a bit of exposure to the morning sun. At 2.96 miles the trail reaches a saddle with views to the north and south and a juncture to the Walker Basin Trail. After the brief respite, the trail continues to climb to about 3.67 where we reach another brief flat spot. Looking up Baldy is in view and looking close. I comment to Wally “looks like the mountain has another 1000 feet for us”. And then Chris comes up and rains on the parade and says (without being asked) “yeah, we have another 2000 feet to go.” Buzzkill

Started the next climb at 3.93. At 4.35 we passed through a nice section of young pine trees. Hopefully, a shady spot “to be” for future generations. The trail continues to climb to about 4.83 when it connects to the Super Trail. The Gardner ended here and we continued north on the Super Trail. You may have noticed a common theme…well, it continues…..from here the trail continued to climb, wrapping itself around the upper base of Wrightson Peak. Actually started to encounter some remnants of snow. At 5.23 we passed a dry Baldy Spring. At 5.48 we reached another saddle and joined a couple of other trails that started the final ascent to the peak. The last 1.5 miles had not been that bad (3.93 to 5.48). The inclines were moderate and you had some spectacular scenery to keep you company. That was about to change. The last push was rocky and had some very aggressive switchbacks. It was a little bit of a struggle with the incline and altitude. Finally reached the top around 6.52. (My Garmin has a tendency to creep when I’m standing still. So I tried to make some calculated adjustments with the mileage so that the description and the miles were somewhat accurate).

Great feeling in reaching the top. Amazed at the number of people I encountered in the last segment and then the number of people we saw while enjoying the views from the top. Counted over 30 people in that time frame (and 3 dogs!). Of those 30 people, I think only 2-3 came from the Gardner/Super Trail direction. I think everyone else came up from the west side. Usually (for me), repeating the same route seems to go faster the second time. You’d expect that to be the case, especially going down hill. Not the case this time. Seemed to take a lot longer than expected to reach noted landmarks. Funny, even though I hiked “with” Chris and Wally we really weren’t together as much as I would have thought. We all have different comfort speeds and so we ended up being spread across several switchbacks for most of the hike. That being said, we still had time for some good conversations and it was great to finally meet Wally. Really want to thank Chris for including me on this one.

Temps were great. Anywhere from 60-80, depending on time and location. (Not as chilly up top as you might think). A lot of sun exposure. Surprisingly, minimal wildlife. A couple of squirrels and that was it.

I got a lot of great help from user Jim_H to make my first visits to the Santa Ritas (this is my first triplog here, not sure if we can tag other users). I did 2 backpacks in a week there after bailing on my first trip due to getting caught in "severe gale force" winds and driving snow (Mar 14-15) at Baldy Saddle. My tent got blown down and I had to cowboy camp in 50+ mph sustained winds & sub-freezing temps. This report is mostly from my second trip.

AZT / Ditch Mountain
Be warned: the only commercially available map for the Santa Ritas (Green Trail Maps) shows the wrong location of the AZT, as does CalTopo. That caused problems for me on my first trip. Second trip I followed the old AZT routing starting from Apache Springs TH - down the Forest Road to Ditch Mountain Trail. Camped near Bear Spring.

Walker Basin / Gardner Canyon
Good climbs on these trails to go from the foothills of the Santa Ritas to the Crest. I didn't start to see snow on the trail until the upper reaches of Gardner Cyn Tr (~8000'). Looking around at north-facing slopes showed the snow level starting ~6500'.

Super Trail
The stretch of Super Tr from Gardner Cyn to Baldy Saddle was mostly snow covered. Fortunately the snow was still cold and hard-packed (Mar 21) so I was not post-holing. Another good climb, ~500' over a half mile. I didn't attempt Wrightson, it was completely snow covered, but some day hikers were doing it. Camped on a little exposed knoll above Baldy Saddle with great views - the same spot I got stormed out of a few days before.

Crest
Most of the Crest Tr was snow covered but it was entirely passable. I carried traction devices but didn't need them the whole trip. Snow was still cold and hard-packed (Mar 22) so I was not post-holing. As with all Sky Island crests - incredible views with many mountain ranges in the distance (Huachucas, Whetstones, Patagonias, Rincons, Catalinas, etc.)

East Sawmill Canyon
After Crest this was my second favorite Trail of the hike. Starts off a little confusingly by continuing to rise along the Santa Rita crest before dropping into East Sawmill Cyn. Beautiful forests up top, tight canyon in the middle, desert scrubland at the end.

Greaterville
My map showed the beginning and end points of this trail as about the same elevation so I thought it was going to be a mostly flat walk. Nope. Goes straight up a ridge then straight back down the other side. Greaterville Tr links to FR 165 which I took until connecting back with the AZT.

AZT
Road walk for a bit to Kentucky Camp where I stayed the night. Better camping back along the AZT than here at KY but there was water at KY. Finished up the trip along the AZT back to Apache Springs TH.

All in all the Santa Ritas were a great place to backpack. Trail system very nice and no problems navigating. Water was flowing everywhere except Baldy Spring which was covered in snow. Thanks again to Jim_H.

Wifey, LE, and I attempted to camp in Gardner Canyon Thursday through Saturday. Thursday was very rainy all day. The campsites were covered in hailstones when we arrived, the ground was muddy, and it was cold. We drove into Sonoita, had dinner while the rain abated, then went back to the campsite after dark. We would up sleeping in the cars. It was fine for me, since my 1st gen CR-V makes into a bed and I converted it into a sweet camper. Wifey thought she'd be more comfortable in the Soob, so she and LE slept in there. Sadly wifey woke up feeling pretty terrible.

It was still a bit rainy on Friday, cold, and not fun for wifey, so she took LE back home Friday. I stuck it out, since our family friend Eric was being delivered Friday night. I enjoyed a quiet afternoon and evening, and Eric showed up with his dad just before bedtime. I'd set up a hammock for Eric, so he crashed there while his dad drove home.

Saturday morning we set off for Wrightson via Gardner Canyon. Eric had never done a strenuous hike before, but he did great. We started seeing a fair bit of snow early on. By the time we approached Super Trail there was at least 6" to 12" in places, but someone had passed before us with a dog, making the trail easy to follow. About halfway to Baldy Saddle, though, our intrepid predecessor turned back, and the snow at that point was about a foot deep or more. I could see Baldy Saddle, and the trail looked fairly visible enough, so we soldiered on.

We had a late lunch at Baldy Saddle, enjoying the view. We then decided to attempt Wrightson. There was a good trail, well-compacted, all the way to Wrightson Spring. There it abruptly ended, and proceeding would have required some steep climbs through deep snow and navigating a rather precipitous route, so we decided discretion was the better part of valor.

On the way back, just past Baldy Saddle, we encountered three teen boys headed for the saddle. Their passage further developed the trail we blazed, so getting back to Gardner trail was much easier.

We made it back to camp just before dark, packed up, and headed home. It was a delightful day.

Jim
Jim and Brian and I left rainy Tucson and carpooled down to the east side of the Santa Ritas on a stormy and chilly morning, parking my truck at the Arizona Trail/Chinaman Trail trailhead. We headed south on the Chinaman Trail, following the route of an old mining flume/canal. The occasional warmth of the sun soon vanished for the remainder of the day, and occasional short lived drizzles became the norm. This was my first time on this trail, and I enjoyed the green hillsides of oak, pinyon and juniper, far reaching views to the Whetstones and Huachucas, and, for the cactus fanatic in me, Echinocereus rigidissimus aplenty.

Big Casa Blanca Canyon brought the first tall pines, while high above the canyon storm clouds hung low and heavy over Josephine Peak and Mount Wrightson, dragging drooping boils of snow flurries across their summits. We took a lunch break at Bear Spring (located west of where the USGS topo shows the spring), and then began ascending the south slope of the canyon. Interesting sandstone beds along the way were reminiscent of Coconino Sandstone and this section reminded me a bit of Mogollon Rim hiking.

The climb ceased at Walker Basin Trail junction, where we turned north to follow it across the eastern slopes of Josephine and Wrightson. A couple of drainage crossings actually held a little bit of water, a surprise given how dry the summer was.

We reached Gardner Canyon Trail late in the afternoon and began the last leg, dropping into the piney goodness of Gardner Canyon. Nice forest in here. Trail transitioned into road, darkness arrived, and we finished the last half mile by headlamp.
Arriving back in Tucson we stopped for dinner at Filiberto’s before heading home.

Definitely a cold one, but the stormy skies and winter like conditions were a neat change of pace. Good hike.

A cold moist and overcast day for this loop hike in the eastern Ritas. Some people enjoy that, but it was quite cold. Ironically, at least 2 of us considered postponing a day, but neither of us followed through on the thought. The forecast did claim it would be nice by noon. Somehow, it got worse.

We lacked the time and motivation to hike the Gardner Canyon Trail uphill to the Super Trail. The upper sections near the Super Trail is probably the most scenic section of trail.

Not a bad little loop, though the drive to get you there is more than would be ideal to access it. Excellent views of Josephine, Wrightson, the crest all the way to Florida Peak.

Met Brian and Jim on the east side of Tucson and then we hopped in Brian’s van for the trip to the trailhead. Started hiking a little after 10 am on the Cave Canyon Trail. Pretty pine forest on this canyon was quite enjoyable. As we started climbing out of the upper canyon onto more exposed terrain, we cleared a fallen tree from the trail. Lots of young yet good sized pines growing just below Florida Saddle. Checked out a little high point with Jim and then we took a lunch break at the saddle.

We had some amazing views and some aspen color on the Crest Trail, where temps felt refreshingly cool. Passing Baldy Saddle and its group of backpackers, the temperature dropped significantly as we approached Baldy Spring (dry), and noticed ice crystals along the edge of the trail.

The sun was getting low in the sky as we turned onto Gardner Canyon Trail. We stopped to admire the view of Wrightson from the ridge top, and witnessed a large black bear walking across the slope from us, where we had just been. The mighty beast worked its way up the mountain side and soon disappeared from sight. We continued down Gardner, watching the sun turn the distant hills a deep orange as it set. We hiked by headlamp below the Walker Basin Trail junction, into (from what I could see) was a beautiful forested canyon. We stopped to admire the stars and Milky Way before making the final leg of the journey on the Link Trail back to the van. Great hike, and lots of beautiful country seen and memories made. My first hike on the eastern slope of the Santa Ritas.

A counter-clockwise loop hike with Preston, Brian, and myself. Brian drove his van, and we did just fine accessing the trailhead with RWD. It does have good clearance, but a skilled Honda Civic driver could likely get there, too. Creek crossings were nothing, this day.

Cave Canyon Trail is nice, but not one I would want to hike in summer. It was great in the shade, yet quite hot with the sun on that south slope. Despite what I read on a certain omni site for trails, at no point is Cave Canyon over grown or remotely thick. The trail east of Florida Saddle had a lot of asters with seed and that brickle bush with thorns, or whatever it is called, but going to the hill to the east of the saddle was still fine. We did clear a down tree from the trail, but it is gone.

Preston and I checked out the hill to the east of Florida Saddle and then the Apache Pine just to the east of that. Both look nice. That hill really is a nice backpack or resting spot.

After lunch at the saddle, we proceeded up the Crest Trail. All of the down trees have now been cleared from the trail! One hopes this winter does not produce a new cohort for next year. Virtually all of the down trees this year were not dead when they blew over in a wind. As always, the views are excellent. Great to rest at the top of the trail just below Mt Ian.

After Baldy Saddle we started down the Super Trail where the shade was quite cold and some trail side frost was present. It looked to be soil moisture that froze overnight on detritus and remained frozen all day, on that north aspect. We observed no bears on the Super Trail, but one may have observed us.

The Upper Gardner Canyon Trail was the highlight of the day. Starting down the trail, the mix of remaining large old Arizona pines with some ponderosa pine and mostly Arizona pine reproduction, is quite nice. We stopped on a ridge in a mature pine grove to relax and enjoy the view. I counted some pine leaves and made an interesting "discovery" of 6 leaves per fascicle. So, while Arizona Pine can have it's leaves in bundles of 3, 4, and 5, it turns out that rare specimens of this species can also have 6 leaves per fascicle. I don't think I have ever read about that, before! Brian and Preston also counted this, and I took a photo of one of them as held open, by Preston. Most probably aren't super into that, but it excited me!

More people would probably be excited by the bear! We certainly were. While chatting, I happened to be looking back up towards Wrightson and noticed a good sized black bear traversing the slope not too far above us, and potentially he was walking right along the trail, most likely the Super Trail. We were able to get some fuzzy photos. He walked up over the hill and probably went towards the slopes of the Old Baldy Trail as it starts up to the summit. Ironically, we observed no poop in that area, while there was a ton of it lower down on both Cave and Gardner Canyon trails.

It was then great views and an increasingly cold hike down as dark approached.

Ok, so pretty much what Linda said - [ triplog ] - but in my defense, the underrepresentation of switchbacks was intentional, just my way of softening the reality that there was actually a dizzying number of them. I would also add that once the uphill started, the sniveling did as well. It was hot & mostly breeze-free the whole trip. I blew through a ton of water (about 4 liters) and took on a pretty good sunburn. On the positive side, the views were great 99% of the way and the trails below the Super were empty. Some highlights included a most bizarrely manicured section of the Walker Basin trail which appeared to have been raked as a final touch, a Whitetail doe and her fawn, and views of Josephine Peak that can only be taken in along this route.

As per usual, it shook out to be a fine day in the end. Thanks for driving down Linda. I'll try to come up with something a little less sunny next time.

Matt and I got started from the Tunnel Spring trailhead just before 0700. Headed south on Chinaman Trail (which now seems to be called Ditch Mtn trail per the FS website). Easy hiking on Chinaman, with nice views. Got on Walker Basin and headed generally north. Somewhat steeper, but still fairly easy and good views. Matt claimed there were only three switchbacks on that portion of Walker Basin, but I think he adopted common-core math, because there were wayyyy more than three.

The real climbing began once we were headed uphill on Gardner Canyon trail. Slow going, and the heat did not help. The trail is in good condition, just not much shade. Super Trail was nicer, and still had some patches of snow alongside the trail. I actually put some snow under my hat in order to cool off. Took a snack break at Baldy Saddle before heading up to the summit. A few more patches of snow, but no problem.

Quick stop at the summit, there were seven hippies up there, which is not my thing. Easy descent, then retraced our steps back down to Gardner Canyon which we took all the way down to the truck.

Zero deadfall the entire way today, and all trails were in good shape. The road in is in good shape, with a few warer crossings. As long as you have 4+” of clearance, you’re good, although it would be tedious in a sedan. Good day, although it was a little warm at times.

I have been wanting to hike Mount Ian for some time, and finally decided to get it done. I got the idea for this route from a similar hike that @lindaAnn did a couple of years ago.

Starting from the Cave Canyon TH, I did a CW loop basically going up the Gardner Canyon Trail and coming back down the Cave Canyon Trail. Along the way I did an out-and-back from Baldy Saddle to Mount Wrightson, and then went off-trail from the Crest Trail to and from Mount Ian.

Mount Ian has an amazing view of Mount Wrightson, and I enjoyed taking a lunch break there.

Trails that I hiked on were all in good shape, although the Cave Canyon Trail could stand to have a little trim work done.

The temperature at the TH was 40 when we started and 70 when we returned. There is a decent amount of sun exposure on this hike, and I would not want to hike it if it was any warmer.

I enjoyed this hike, although it is more difficult to get to the TH than it is to start in Madera Canyon.

I’d been wanting to do this loop for a long time but never had space in the schedule till some friends arranged a car camping trip to Gardner Canyon. A couple friends tagged along till Florida Saddle but weren’t up for the whole loop, so I pressed on solo while they returned down Cave Canyon.

There were tiny pockets of snow here and there, and no water along the Crest. Collected some in the drainage for Gardner Canyon off Super, which was flowing well.

Decided to go down and join the Tucson folks for some camping/running in the Santa Ritas. Explored some mines, etc. on Saturday afternoon before an evening of beer and campfire...

Hiked up Cave Creek in a group of 3-4 to Florida Saddle, then a couple of us peeled off and picked up another for a side trip to McCleary Peak, which I had never been up before. Water coming down the drainage east of Armour Spring, but none at the spring, as usual. The traverse over to the peak was fun, but it was cold and windy, so we didn't spend much time there.

Took Four Springs to the ridge, and followed the ridiculously steep connector trail (another new one for me) back up to Crest trail. Once back on Crest, we encountered a nice stretch of snow. Short break at Baldy Saddle before heading down.

Nice cruising down Gardner Canyon trail, the lower stretch (below Walker Basin junction) was new to me, and unexpectedly nice until the road. Pretty enjoyable loop, lots of water in the lower drainages, and nice to check off some of the last stretches of trail I hadn't yet seen in the Santa Ritas.

Day hike to summit Wrightson with my buddies Keith and Philip. Keith turned back about a half mile short of Super Trail… too steep for him.

Plenty of snow on Super, around Baldy Saddle, and up Wrightson. The clouds were low and fast. Visibility at the summit was not much.

Reconnected with Keith at the end of the old road section of Gardner, at the one time trailhead.

Cave Canyon TH --> Link Trail --> Gardner Canyon --> Super --> Crest --> Cave Canyon Trail

Did this hike with a friend who wasn't quite ready for the distance or elevation gain, so we took a leisurely pace. I added Gardner Canyon to my mental list of places where it's hard to believe one is in southern Arizona. We passed on summiting to make sure we finished in the daylight.

The Crest Trail from Baldy Saddle to Florida is breathtaking. The views and the forest are both amazing. A stunning 2.5 miles that I'll definitely repeat at some point.

The descent down Cave Canyon was steep with loose footing. I had gotten ahead of my friend, so I missed out on the black bear that he saw. That's my punishment for being that far ahead.

Easy to navigate snow up high. Trails in good condition. Minor blow down. Some blowdown removed via handsaw during hike.

Well, it seems like everyone these days is optimizing their metabolic rate or metabolic flexibility. So, getting with the times I was shirtless in the cool breeze on the summit. I was also fasting since a "lunch" yesterday around 3 PM, and a mistakenly eaten Lara bar around 6:30 PM. Felt fine while doing this. Brought regular food just in case, and ate none. Drank my usual water. Writing this I'm now at just over 24 hours fasting, but my roast will soon be done. Might be interested in building to 36 or 48 hours. I hear it gets really easy after 72 hours. Gotta get those ketones going.

Nice trail, and Wrightson was great as always. Snow was about as expected. Traction would be fine to have, but wasn't needed. I like the Apache Pine in the canyon down low, and there is a lot of ponderosa and Arizona pine reproduction up high. An aggressive individual with a goal of creating a healthier forest could make a big impact on the areas of dense reproduction with a hand saw and an eye for aesthetics.

I used Lee's September 10, 2016 stats.
