March 30 - April 1, 2007
3 days, 2 nights, 8 hikers
Took the Grandview to the Tonto to Hance Rapids. Took the New Hance trail to the South Rim.
Sections of the Grandview trail are filled with cobblestone, making for difficult decent when cover with snow.
Horseshoe Mesa and the Last Chance Mine was our first stop. Here we found a miner's cabin, mine shafts and several mining artifacts. We then traveled west to Cave of the Domes just below the rim of the mesa. The cave has many large rooms. Back on the trail, we drop off the western arm of Horseshoe Mesa and came back east along the Tonto to Hance Creek camping area, 6.5 miles from the trailhead.
The next day we continue along the Tonto for 6.5 miles to Hance Rapids where we camp.
Back on the trail our last day, we hike 9 miles out the New Hance Trail back to the South Rim. The trail has extremely steep switchbacks with portions obliterated by rock falls and slides. The views are spectacular.
Hikers: Ann, Dan, Tim, Richard, Bob, Dooley, Darrell, Greg |
