In brief:
TH: 0725
Summit: 1235
Depart Summit: 1320
TH: 1653
Another long day out-and-back from Mesa. Wanted to get in another shot at Humphrey's before the monsoon hits. After that there will be no more out-and-backs for me until fall, needing to camp near the TH in order to hit the trail and get off the summit early, before the lightening.
I found the Inner Basin much more scenic than the summit trail from the Snow Bowl side. True, it is longer and there is more AEG, but it is well worth it. Also, there was only one other hiker ascending from that side in my time frame. Saw a few on the descent but they were still far down in the valley when I passed them on the way out. In the saddle there was the usual crush of hikers coming up from the west, but that is only the very last mile up. The aspen glades down in the basin are surreal, and the views from the meadows with the bowl of peaks around you are really nice. Not something you get on the western side. Especially liked the big lazy switchbacks that contour up the east side of Agassiz. Love a good tundra boogie. Good visibility. Could see the north rim of the canyon and I'm pretty sure we could pick out the northern end of the Mazatzals, at least that was the consensus of the crowd on top. Something like 100 mile visibility.
Salved my wounded pride by ending up +6 to my -1 from 2 weeks ago (hikers passed on the ascent). I guess that means I can call it an average of +2.5. See, one can rationalize anything if they have a mind to. Took another little bottle of Bowmore for the top. I think I may have just established a personal tradition. Could do worse. |
