I think it's a mental block with Quartz, I love that trail, but I always drag on it in places. Nice cool morning, with a great breeze, so at least that helped. We took a nice break on Quartz, then decided to head over to Butterfly Peak.
Someone (who seems to be confused) has placed a register at the first hilltop to the east of Quartz, about a 5 minute walk, calling it Butterfly. We weren't sure about the reasoning behind that, but it appears to have been there since 2007. We continued on our way, scrambling and making our way through the brush in places. At the first peak, JJ casually pointed and said "We just go right up there". Um, nope. Not me. I sat down on a rock, and took pictures while everyone else made their way up. I am just not that brave or skilled.
After they came back down, we made our way to the farther peak. I liked that scramble, but could have done without all the catclaw. We took a short break up there, had a snack, then made our way back down. Once we were back on the trail, it was an easy, but warm, walk back down to the car. I finished off my 3 liters of water about 100' from the trailhead. We stopped for a late lunch in Maricopa, then headed back to the Valley. Great day! It was great to meet Kelly & John, and to see JJ & Denny again. Thank you, JJ, for driving! |
