Day 1 of 4 Day Camping Trip. This Area historically is peaking for Fall Color. Not this Year. It was mostly still green. I didn't Hike very far as it seemed pointless at that point. I struggled to find compositions with what there was to work with. The Highlight of the Day turned out to not be the Fall Colors. It turned out to be a adrenalin pumping encounter with the Charmin Toilet Paper Spokesman at only 150 feet away. I did everything wrong and apparently right. Instead of making noise, I stayed in tune with the Quiet Area and stayed still and completely quiet. I was hoping my black t-shirt didn't confuse. As a result, I got photos through the deadfall and he posed briefly, sniffing the air and staring at me, before sauntering on. We were both headed opposite directions, but even though I was not traveling his direction, I kept hypervigilant all the way back to the truck. I only had my fanny pack and a liter of water, so nothing that I normally carry, including food, my knife, or my In-Reach. Needless to say, the excitement stayed with me the rest of the day. It was a contradiction. I was glad I was alone as I might not have had the opportunity to see such an amazing animal up close, but at the same time, to be alone if it had gone bad, would have been bad. Just that sighting and knowing that we had shared mutual respect, made for an Amazing Day. It was a warm day, but both of us are ready to winter.
