Headed out to Miles which is probably my favorite TH in the wilderness to hike West Pinto. Started off with it being a little overgrown to the Bull Basin turn off but nothing major. Crossed Rock Creek which was dry, however a ton of water had moved through it very recently. After crossing Rock Creek you can still follow the trail as it goes up and over a couple small hills with again some moderate overgrowth (catclaw included) but nothing to horrible. I've never seen cattle in this area but I came across 4 who had a stare down with me before finally running away. About a mile in (just before West Spring) conditions start to deteriorate quickly. Massive erosion from what I'm assuming is from the monsoon rains has wiped out 70% of the trail all the way to Oak Flat. I saw one area where the erosion had eaten a way of section more than 5 feet high. It is VERY bad. The little bit of trail that did not get wiped out is sitting under 4-5 feet of grass, catclaw and whatever else has taken over. I spent some time trying to find it but gave up and stayed in creek. Came across a couple of hunters at the Cuff Button Junction who had backpacked down from the top of West Pinto and they said they had lost the track most of the way, as it's an overgrown mess on top. Got to Oak Flat had lunch and started back as it started to warm up. I've hiked West Pinto more times then I can count, but with all the erosion and overgrowth it looks nothing like it once did, a lot of it is completely unrecognizable, a very sad sight to see. Honestly at this point, I'm not sure if it can be fixed at all. It's going to take a massive amount of work to lay down some new track and clean up the little bit that is still around. |
