Nice little Saturday in the MSP. Up Bell Pass and down the Fountain Hills side. Great views of the snow covered Four Peaks. Hit the Windgate Trail junction but kept going up East End trail. Only ran into a few people on the backside.

Once we made the Toms Thumb junction it was the usual weekend crowd. Good thing is it lasts less than a mile until the turn off for Toms Thumb. Then it was back to solitude with nobody on trail until reaching Gateway. Made it back just before dark.

Good sunny day for a hike. Did this trail last year and decided to do it again. There were a few people out but it wasn't really crowded. Once we got to the top we headed to the Lookout where we took a break for lunch. Felt good and strong despite having not hiked in a few weeks. Last year the Lookout was crowded, but this time we had the place to ourselves which was great. Enjoyed the panoramic views even though it was pretty hazy from strong winds the day before. Ate a peaceful lunch, then headed back towards the main trail. We passed several groups of people heading to the Lookout, so we timed it perfectly. Very glad we didn't get to the Lookout a little later because it would have been a crowd again.

East End trail wasn't bad. My first time on that trail I was slipping and sliding on loose rocks the whole way, but this time it was much better. That climb up to Bell Pass was challenging. Had to rest and recover at the top.

Once again a very enjoyable hike.

Did this loop a few years back and decided to take the wife this go around. Surprisingly sparse crowds at the TH this time of year, when we arrived around 7:30 am. Once out of the initial TH area, we enjoyed quite a bit of solitude all the way up to Tom's Thumb, and then again, once we began heading down East End trail.

Instead of cutting back through Windgate Pass for the lasso loop, we continued on to Bell Pass instead.

Best part of the loop, IMO, is the last couple of miles climbing up to Tom's Thumb from the West side. The first and final couple of miles near the TH are kind of blase.

I really wish they would put in more trails to the peaks/summits in the McDowells, as well as a west side approach to Thompson peak so you could do it as a loop.

For some reason, when hiking out here, I feel like the place is managed by star-bellied sneetches.

Keeping up with the Joneses. Counterclockwise. Beautiful day for a hike. Didn't see many hikers until the last couple miles, then quite a few. Thanks Kelly! :)

With the temps finally getting decent, I did my first hike in the valley since April. It was in the low 60s when we started at 6:30 a.m. and warmed up to the low 80s by noon.

We were in search of fall colors. Scratch that, we were in the McDowells

We arrived to a mostly empty parking lot and hit the trail. We took the loop clockwise and made the climb to Tom's Thumb, staying in the shade about 95% of the time.

Linda mentioned she needed to meet some of her relatives up top, so I showed her the Ogre's Den.

On the way down, she pointed out a hawk perched on top of a cactus that neither of us could identify. I'm sure the photos will be blurry, but it looked like a cross between a hawk and a seagull or maybe an albino hawk. There was a lot of white on it.

The east side of the Bell Pass Trail went smoothly in the full sun with an occasional breeze.

We took a short break at the top, then mostly coasted downhill to finish.

As we were finishing, I was able to provide a lady starting her hike with some helpful information. She was looking for some loop information and what to do if she saw a snake.

It got a little warm but nothing too crazy. It was great hiking with Linda again.

We didn’t have coffee after the hike.

Let the valley hiking season begin!

dry Mountain Spring Dry Dry
Dry where it crosses the trail. I wonder if the pipe broke further up, or if it just dried up. It used to be quite reliable.

After tossing around a few different options, we settled on an always good loop in the McDowells. Met Bruce at the Gateway Trailhead at 0630, and we made our way over towards Windgate and Tom’s Thumb trails. Nice temps to start, and shade nearly the entire way up the Tom’s Thumb trail, which was very much appreciated.

Once finally in the sun, we were heading downhill, so I kept my complaining to a minimum. Bruce showed me his backup home for when he gets kicked out of his house. The descent down East End went quickly.

I whined a lot climbing up to Bell Pass, but Bruce brought his cattle prod along and kept me mostly moving uphill. Quick break at the pass to enjoy the breeze, then an easy (but warm) walk the rest of the way back to the trailhead. Some interesting people watching, and Bruce gave a creative rattlesnake tutorial to one novice hiker. Good workout hike, and good to hike with Bruce again.

No nutrition waist channels were signed into the summit register for 05-May,'18, so the Linked trail guide one did for that day is a lie. It would be fun to research how many more they've embellished. :-s I digress, but at 5:41am the mindless greyhounds all crushed onto the Gateway Loop Trail, so I chose the more mellow Desert Park start. The rat race was avoided because none of them were seen again for the rest of my hike and double T solo. The East End ascent was hot and humid, then some nice breezes and cloud cover helped immensely. I need to remember that the Tom's Thumb TH doesn't have water because two liters was slightly inadequate.

Decided to lead another Meetup. Strong response, fun group and wonderful weather. Did a loop that is easy till East End. This slowed a couple of the participants.

Decided to add Tom's Thumb on. This short side trip timed out perfectly with the others' arrival from East End.

Saw few people till this point, aside from mtn bikers on Pemberton. That all changed as soon as Tom's Thumb trail came into view. More peeps there from 2-3 pm than I expected.

Hiked this area two years ago and really enjoyed it. Last time I followed the HAZ official route. This time on the return leg decided to take Bell's Pass Trail to make it more of a loop instead of a lollipop. My brain likes loop hikes and doesn't like retracing my path. This was a pleasing route. The hike up the saddle of Bell's Pass was a bit of a climb, but it avoided retracing steps for the last couple of miles on a trail that is always crowded.

Last time I hiked here I somehow managed to miss the spur trail to the Lookout. I guess I was so excited to be near Tom's Thumb and didn't even notice the turnoff. I only realized it after the hike and regretted not going. This time I made sure to visit the Lookout and it was totally worth it! Amazing views! Great spot to watch the Fountain Hills fountain. Great spot for lunch. There are even some nice and comfortable (for rocks) rocks to sit on while eating. Totally worth the little extra time and effort.

 That was a barn burner! :) I've been thinking about this hike for a few years and finally completed it in the rain today. I'll admit that thesnake lit a fire underneath me to get it done. Thanks for the TL @thesnakefromthelemma. I completed it the easier direction though, so I'll have to go back and hike it south to north like he did. One thing this hike reminded me of was that Sunrise is a really wimpy peak compared to the rest of the McDowell Mountain range. : wink : Much of this route also was familiar to the Torote Loops in the Sierra Estrella range. Could be a five star route except for all those god-damned jets overhead constantly!

This is a version of this hike that I do once or twice a year.

I started from the Golden Eagle TH in Fountain Hills, started on the Dixie Mine Trail once I left the Eagle's Nest subdivision, and made my way over to the Tom's Thumb LO. I did the loop clockwise, so I went up on the Tom's Thumb Trail and descended on the East End Trail.

This is a decent hike to get some distance and elevation gain when the weather is cooler. It would have been nicer to have some shade and perhaps some cooler temperatures, but it wasn't hot by any means.

The trails are fairly rocky out there, and the East End Trail is very slippery when descending it.

We decided to start our ascent with the Desert Park Trail because when the gate opens in the morning, ~98% of the hikers simultaneously crush onto the Gateway Loop like greyhounds chasing a hare, which is definitely one of the silly aspects of MSP hiking (it is Snottsdale). : wink :
This hike is essentially the same as the Tom's Thumb Loop off Windgate Pass Trail, except that it omits The Lookout. It seems fatuous that they're almost duplicates. This was Dese's first time at the McDowell's highpoint and only my second. I may have one more highly illegal ascent planned, but that'll be a triplog for another day...

Hit the trail around 6am. Hiked in shade most of the way to Tom’s Thumb. Had the trail mostly to myself after Windgate Pass junction, except for a trail steward heading down the switchbacks. I startled a stripey snake which quickly exited stage left. There were a fair number of hikers at Tom’s Thumb, all of whom had come up the east side.

Had a rest and pressed on down East End. From there the sun was up and there was no respite from it the rest of the trip. Nobody on East End except my second snake of the day, who had no stripes and hastily zipped off to the left. This one tried really hard to convince me he was a rattler but I wasn’t fooled.

Saw a lone jogger headed up Bell Pass, and then snake number three. This was a stripey one and he wasn’t as zippy as the first two. Zippy enough to elude my camera though.

Enjoyed the view from Bell Pass while scarfing a venison bar, and watched a couple hikers make their ascent from the west. Once they reached the saddle, I headed down. Passed maybe a half dozen more hikers before reaching the connector back to the trailhead, but no more snakes.

Today I decided to do a lasso loop hike from the Golden Eagle TH in Fountain Hills. I went on the Dixie Mine Trail to the Toms Thumb Trail, doing the lasso loop CW. I did not go to Toms Thumb, but I had lunch at the "The Lookout" near Toms Thumb.

It was a nice day to do this hike -- the high temperature was in the upper 60's which is warmer than I like, but cloudy skies and breezy conditions made it seem cooler than it was.

The wildflowers were really nice, which made for an enjoyable hike.

There was an impressive display of wildflowers throughout this hike. Desert Hyacinth, aka Blue Richards, were the champion wildflowers on this day. Fiddlenecks also made an impressive showing. There were lots of other wildflowers also.

I decided to stay close to home today and get some miles in. The cloudy, cool weather was perfect for a hike like this.

I had done this lasso loop once before, and as before I did the loop clockwise. I enjoy the views at the Tom's Thumb Lookout, so I stopped there for a lunch break.

There weren't very many people out today - I saw about 7-8 people the entire day.

Kelly suggested a hike in the McDowells. Nearly 20 cars were lined up waiting for the 7:02 gate opening at the Gateway trailhead. Not quite as cold as Saturday morning.
Once we got going on our way to Bell Pass we didn't see many people until we reached the top of East End trail at the Tom's Thumb jct. Descending Tom's Thumb to Windgate we saw 19 hikers, which was nine more than the over/under of 10. From Windgate back to the Gateway trailhead the over/under was 120. Started out slow, only passing by about 70 until the last quarter mile where we encountered 101 (including three babies). It never seemed crowded on the trail nor did it feel like there were more out than a typical winter weekend. Without actually counting we didn't realize how many people we pass by.
Fun hike. Thanks Kelly. :)
