After the storms and before work. Seemed like a good time to get in some more of the wash trails I need to finish off in SNP West. Cold cloudy and blustery morning. Delightful

With the slightly cooler weather Ginny and I headed to Saguaro National Park west to the Picture Rock Trail head. We did a hodge podge of trails for a 6 mile hike. fairly easy walking although it felt a little warm toward the end of the hike. No water along any of the trails as was expected. Nothing out of the ordinary on this hike but it was scenic. Will have to plan another trip soon to catch some of the trails we didn't hit today

saw a tarantula, rattlesnake and 2 tortoises!

hardly saw anyone. made pretty good time all things considered. hard to carry enough water in this heat and humidity.

Amazingly enough, I'd never been in SNPW, and we wanted to get a couple of hours hiking in on the way to Tucson. Being midafternoon on a weekend, we skipped the cherry-dipp'd line up the chains at Picacho, and I wasn't really keen on hiking straight uphill into a Catalina burn area, so I threw a bunch of SNP routes in the app and headed out. We spent a little too much time at the pool in the morning to have time for Wasson ... save that for another day ... but managed to put together a nice little loop from the north.

There was a little bit too much sandy wash hiking for me as we headed into the park, but the return half was much more pleasant. It's a bit dreary out there for spring. The lack of fall and winter rains is returning a whole lot of meh. Still a nice couple of hours outside.

Just about finished with my quest to finish up all the official trails of Saguaro National Park West and a few unofficial. Started early in the morning again at the Ringtail Trail Head near Contzen Pass on Picture Rock Road. I love the early morning in the desert, this particular morning reminded me of the hikes north of Oracle along the Arizona Trail, probably was the cooler mornings and visibility forever. Like most of the trails in the northwest portion of this park the trails can be described by saying sandy, lots of sand. The Cam-Boh and Panther Peak Wash Trails were amazing in the Morning with views to the North of the Ridge along the Picture rocks Road, Panther Peak and what I believe is called Sombrero Peak. The sun was just touching these as I was hiking and they were so colorful and crisp unlike their appearance later in the day when the sun is in full up position. The Panther Peak Wash was very Sandy but I was going downhill so it made it easier. On an earlier post about Dobe Wash I mentioned that the Ironwood trees were the largest I have seen in the park, well I stand corrected the Ironwood trees along this trail are huge, the largest I have seen with the exception of the one in front of my parents house (I have never been to Ironwood Tree National Monument). The Roadrunner Trail is uneventful as it follows along the park boundary to Picture Rocks Road and the Cam-Boh Picnic Ground, at least it wasn't sandy (is heavily used by horses so it had lots of rocks in the trail with lots of opportunities to twist an ankle). Headed north, upstream on the Prophecy Wash Trail (more sand) to its end where it is marked by an end of trail sign at a random location 2 miles upstream. The Picture rocks Wash Trail junction is about .1 miles prior to the end of this trail. The Picture Rocks Trail heads up a ridge to the east of the wash, not very high and continues downhill and dumps into Picture rocks Wash .9 miles later. The trail along here is a bit rocky but is a welcomed relief from the sandy trails. Good views of Picture Rock Peak and the western end of the Catalina Mountains. Picture Rock Wash on it's upper end is narrow and does a lot of twists and turns so it is rather interesting walking. The wash is not real sandy until the junction with the Brittlebush Trail, from this junction to the Ringtail trail it is wide and sandy. Uneventful walking all the way to the Ringtail Trail. I was tempted to head further east at the Ringtail Trail junction to visit the old abandon Yuma Mine but opted to save that for my next hike. Headed back along the Ringtail Trail to the Mule Deer Trail. I took the Mule Deer Trail to Ironwood Forest Trail because I had never been on this trail before but of coarse this means I have to take the .4 mile sandy Cam-Boh Trail back to the start point of my hike. The Mule Deer Trail is very flat walking on hard desert floor so it is a good alternative if doing a loop hike to avoid the sandy Cam-Boh Trail.

I still had a little more time after the hike along the Encinas Trail so I opted to do a section along the Cam-Boh Trail. Next week I have a loop hike planned for the Cam-Boh, Panther Peak wash, Road Runner, Prophecy wash and Picture Rocks Wash and this portion of the Cam-Boh Trail was not included. This trail can be summed up in two words, Horse Trail. Much of this portion of the trail is rocky and rutted and is a twisted ankle waiting to happen. The views to the Northwest are good especially of Panther peak and the volcanic cliffs along a ridge to the north. The trail follows fairly close to the Road and the sound of traffic is ever present.

as expected things forced plan b, then plan c

double lasso loop from camboh picnic area using a bunch of the short saguaro national park west foothills trails
camboh - mule deer - ringtail - cactus canyon - gila monster - abington/vertical cliffs loop - coyote pass - ironwood forest and back home on camboh.

despite the tame appearing mileage/elevation stats, these are pretty challenging trails to run. lot of sharp, loose rocky footing and deep sandy washes.

got hot the last 2 miles and suffered a little.

cacti are starting to bloom. actually saw 4 or 5 people for once!

Yet another after-work special to get in a peak...I started from the trailhead about 2:30 to start my hike. Headed out on the Cam-boh trail to Ironwood Forest, then Picture Rocks wash to the peak. Apparently I did not get my off trail fill on Sunday, so today would be another taste. Most of the hike to the turnoff is sandy wash, easy but a bit slower going. The off-trail portion of this hike is pretty decent too, there is abundant Cholla, but plenty of room to work around it. Made it to the peak for a little break and to sign in the register, I was only the third entry of the year, maybe about 10 entries since 2010. Great views of Wasson and the Catalinas, hazy conditions once again limited long range views. This initial scramble down is pretty steep for the first few hundred feet, I did have to do the butt-scoot in a few spots to keep from toppling over. After the initial down the rest is really easy. I got back on the Picture Rocks Wash trail and took that back all the way to the Ringtail trail, and then that back to the van. Nice hike with great solitude! The only downer is the road noise from Picture Rocks road, but that is lost after the first half mile or so.
