Was aiming to do Music Mountain and possibly Tortilla Mountain in the same trip. Managed to drive our 4WD high-clearance vehicle past Tortilla Trailhead along SR213 to Peter's Trail #105 Northern Terminus where we started the hike, saving a total of around 6 miles. This drive would not be possible without both high-clearance and 4WD. There are some steep steps to climb at the start of this drive.

Peter's Trail was easy to follow and most of the intruding catclaw had been cleared by prior trail users.

We followed a route from Adam Walker for the ascent, leaving Peter's Trail after Kane Spring and heading directly south towards the eastern side of the summit. Approaching the climb, the catclaw was high and dense but I managed to avoid most of it by scrambling along a waterfall area, swapping the spikes for the less spikey scrub oak. I reached the saddle, opening up the view to the southern part of the range and continued west to the summit cairn. The sheets of paper inside the jar in the summit cairn were last signed in 2023 by Adam Walker whose route we had followed.

As my hiking partner was doing a SOTA activation at the summit (first activation of this peak) we took a long break there, before descending directly north from the summit, picking our way through the brush on what felt like a slightly steeper descent, and rock hopping back to the wash and eventually Peter's Trail.

By the time we were down it was about 3pm and the clouds were coming in fast with a storm. I, being slower and behind, got some light rain which we were expecting but it was obvious that we'd have to save Tortilla for another time. As we finished the drive back out of SR213 it started to pour on the way home.

I've added the gpx to the Kane Spring guide.

Needed to get outside again. A warm Feb weekend, with temps in the mid 70s was softened by cloudiness both Sat and Sun.

Bland scenery on Hoolie with the fire scar taking its toll, though the views were distant. Red Tanks through upper La Barge is rough but a highlight of scenery on the loop. Dutchman is a highway in this stunning supes canyon.

FOTG had claimed the best campspot along the creek, so we settled for option 2 not wanting to encroach on a romantical weekend in the woods. ;)

We took an afternoon jaunt up Trap, which was a real treat, and one I'd like to explore the rest of the way. Unfortunately, sunset forced a turnaround and we headed back to camp for the night. A full moon lit up the sky and temps dropped to 41, about 10 lower that we had expected, but somehow we managed to survive the night.

FOTG stopped by for a few minutes in the ayem on his way out before we headed our own way down toward Charley and Peter. Climbing up to the mesa reintroduced fire damage and the mesa was a mess. The catclaw is prolific and the tread is tough to follow in some places. The five red-spray-painted rocks along the way were instrumentally important in finding the way. :-k

The last two miles along upper Tortilla is a treat with cool geology and plenty of water right now. On the drive out we passed a Jeep Liberty heading up the 213, and I'm pretty sure they were on an intentional one-way trip. Best wishes to those folks and whoever's car they stole.

Sarcastically diminutive title for a relentlessly brutal and endearing route. Almost every one of the linked trail sections are all about The Rippin' and the Tearin', just not in the same context as Hedo Rick! Unless the catclaw rips ones lip or tears ones sack. :o You'll also likely have some cactus spines that one of your significant others can help remove afterwards. Nitty Gritty Slitty Kitty!

1st trip
I took a trip to Black Mountain Summit over Peter’s Mesa. I was trying to find summit logs but only got a few. I’m sure more have been up there but not many wrote about it? I figured I’d either be hiking in the dark in the morning or hiking in the dark coming back. I opted to sleep in and have breakfast with my family before heading out. I got to Tortilla 213 around 9am. There were 4 cars in the lot, which is a lot from my experience. Tortilla always looks dry to me and today the yellow hills were no exception. I’ve been here many times so I jumped on the trail without much ceremony. Soon I was at Peter’s 105 battling catclaw. We really need a trail crew to go through there with the big loppers and widen the narrowing passages. Some places are so think that it’s easier to go around than to stay “on trail”. I often do maintenance, but decided I didn’t have time to dilly-dally.

I’ve seen Peter’s in much better shape, but not crying about it. Not enough people ever tramp through there to make a really clear reliable trail. Also since it follows canyons, It’s hard to get lost and always alternate routes to be taken.
The rain 2 days ago left puddles and little more water for the duration of the hike. I always carry but have a filter too. Didn’t need it. There were still Sycamore and other trees showing fall colors in Tortilla Creek. Kane spring was running like clockwork and the actual spring source always looks the same. If you haven’t been there, the trees around the spring took a bad hit from the Sawtooth fire. Everything around it looks bad. Back on Peter’s I was again assaulted by the red rock bandit. Spray painted cairns kept popping up. I was thinking the painter was back?? I guess It’s possible that I missed a bunch the last few times? I did what I could, and disposed of a few dozen more red cairns.

I made pretty good time and was up top around 4 hours later. Searching I found no summit register so added a small one. There is a false summit (GPS says 10 feet lower) so I’m pretty sure I got the right one. Anyway just a formality if I didn’t, I suppose. It was hazy so the pictures came out ok but not stellar. I poked around a small bit but there isn’t much daylight this time of year. I had a snack and relaxed and then I put on my track shoes and made good time back to Tortilla a bit after dark.

Hiked Peter's Trail to the pass then across the back side of Horse Ridge to do some exploring. Lots of catclaw but to be expected. Scared up a couple white-tail deer who looked surprised to see us. We then headed towards peak 4066 and made our decent on the right or east side dropping down onto Little Hawk Spring. Enjoyed lunch and a break at the spring and then continued down the drainage to the wash, then continued east to meet up with the Hoolie Bacon Trail which we then followed back to the trailhead. Great weather, overcast and even a brief rain shower.

I left the Tortilla 2WD TH early Monday morning intending to ride my mountain bike to the 4WD TH, but a flat tire ended that dream prematurely, so I stashed it off the road. Arrived at the 4WD TH where the new sign directed me onto the trail which is in excellent shape. When I got to where the trail heads up to the mesa from Peter's Creek, I investigated Upper Peter's Canyon for about .8 miles, but the brush got thick and it appeared the Upper Peter's Canyon Loop would be slow going. So I returned to the trail and hiked up to the mesa. I found a trickle of water and many pools below the unnamed spring up on top. I enjoyed a spectacular sunset, then crawled into my sleeping bag for a cowboy camp night. A brief shower gave me a bit of a scare, but the clouds cleared off for a beautiful night. Upon returning to the Peter's Creek trail crossing, I noted something unusual half floating in a pool. It was the viscera of some unknown small animal. And that's why we filter our water in the Superstitions! Despite the volume of water in the creeks, I was able to complete both the in and out sections of the hike without getting wet feet. I retrieved my bike on the return, then joined the parade of tourists on SR88 returning to AJ.The trail is in excellent shape and I thank those have appear to have recently brushed it.

Drove in with the RZR to Peter's trailhead, only went to the low pass as I didn't know Peter's Pass was just a little further, ( I do now). Still quite a bit of water flowing in Tortilla creek and somebody recently groomed the trail so the majority of the catclaw is at bay for now.

Never been out to the Eastern Superstitions area, so Rick suggested a trip out with his RZR and check the area out, before we plan a trip. Even though I have a Jeep, that 1st 300 -- 400 yards made me reconsider taking it out to the actual TH. RZR was perfect, met some hikers coming back up when we hit the gate and then a big group taking a break down at the old ranch area before heading back to 88. we decided to head out and explore JF Trl and head back, but decided we'd check out the old water tank that's still standing first, discovered that Peter's Trail started there. We decided to check out Peter's Trail, went out a couple of miles and turned around at the saddle about 2.20 miles in, had we known we would have went the short distance further to Peter's Pass :( . Nice area and thanks to all for cleaning up the Trail, I'm sticking my clippers in the pack for all futures hikes, never know when they'll come in handy. :) I'm really going to enjoy the Eastern Supers :y:

Met up with Kyle for another trek on the Tortilla Super Loop. This is our third time making this loop and probably not the last. We parked right off the 88 hwy around 7:20am and started hiking the road. This part flies by and we hit the JF trail opting for a clockwise loop. The hike up Hoolie Bacon went well and we dropped down to Red Tanks Trail. We made good time as the miles poured by and took our lunch at La Barge Spring. Here we talked to a pair of guys making a loop from Peralta and were exiting the Whiskey Spring Trail. They were asking how much time they had back to the trailhead. I guessed 3-5 hours. We continued on and headed up the Peters Trail. This portion of the hike started to take it's toll on us. We were both getting tired and route finding kept our heads on a swivel. We took a break at a creek and filtered some water. From there we had one more small climb and then all downhill back to the Tortilla TH. Some trail maintenance has been completed through here and made for quick travel. Once back to the TH we flew down the road and were back to the vehicle around 5:40pm. This was a long day but I'm glad we did it. This is a great hike that doesn't get a lot of traffic. Thanks Kyle for suggesting this one and driving.

Our third time doing this loop and I always forget how tough Peters Trail can be-- every time I thought the climbing was over there was more climbing. There's tons of water out there still. It was a beautiful day for a death march and we only saw a handful of people.

Kyle and I headed out to Tortilla with plans to make the Hoolie Bacon - Peters Loop. We started driving up the road and I was not crazy about the obstacles. We had a quick look and decided to dump the jeep and wrack up a bunch of miles.

The walk up the road flew by. We found ourselves at the true trailhead within the hour. We connected on JF to Hoolie Bacon and followed the trail down towards Red Tanks. Once on the Red Tanks we proceeded west. I really enjoy this portion of trail. Along the way we crossed paths with Fricknaley & Azdesertfather. We continued on and had lunch at La Barge Spring. From there we continued north and ran into more HAZ members, Slowandsteady and BiFrost. We had a nice chat and then continued.

Once on Peters Trail we started making the climb up. Our progress slowed but we pushed on. Along Peters we passed four separate backpacking groups. Most of them were heading to Charlebois. After a while we returned to the parking area and then hiked back on the road and back to the jeep.

This was a long day but well worth. I'm really glad we checked out this area of the Supes and I didn't mind the extra mileage. I look forward to returning to this area again someday.

This is another hike from last year, however, I think its alright to post now, because it is right around the same time of year, and with the extended holidays coming up, some may be looking for some nice three and four day treks. This hike certainly offered some challenging changes in elevations, cold temperatures, and solitude. Most seasoned backpackers would find this to be a moderate hike in terms of difficulty, route finding (all trail), and total miles.

We started at Peralta TH the day after Christmas. Our chosen route was the Dutchman's Trail to Coffee Flats, to Red Tanks, Hoolie Bacon, then Peter's Trail back to the Dutchman's Trail and finishing up on Bluff Springs Trail. If you are into simply drawing new lines on your map and knocking out some remote areas of the Supers this hike may be for you.

Day one was our highest mile day of entire hike. We did not stop much, mainly because of the cool temperatures, we had some Christmas Tamales at a nice deep pool of water along Red Tanks, did a quick side trip to explore what proved to be an old Indian dwelling that utilized a deceptively deep cave. Although, the cave was not hard to locate only a short distance into Red Tanks Trail, it seemed not many people had been, because there was literally plate size pot sherds littering the ground. Our day one goal was to stay at Brad's Water which is in a side canyon/wash before you reach Hoolie Bacon, however, once we got there, we chose to just push forward, as we knew water was not going to be an issue. For future reference Brad's Water always has water, I will put my name and honor to that, if you are ever in a pinch during hot months, there will be water. However, it is not easy to find, I don't know if it was man-made, but it is essentially a small cave or rock grotto that has filled with water, about waste deep and pretty far back. We chose to camp our first night near the opening/beginning of Trap Canyon, just off Hoolie Bacon. We ran into the only people we saw on entire hike around five or so in the afternoon, they were doing a similar loop in reverse, except they were going through La Barge Box, definitely a more direct loop than ours. It got extremely cold the first night, our water froze and we started our second morning with what would be a trend for the first two days, thawing out our tents, recovering our gear, and huddling around the fire. For an additional side trip, if camped near the origins of Trap Canyon, a short walk down the canyon will take you to a ground level cave dwelling, with remnants of former walls and several grinding holes.

Our day two was relatively short in miles, but very scenic, and cold. Hoolie Bacon and Red Tanks both seem to really meander along and drag out at points. The day was made interesting by a pretty good little snow storm in the early afternoon and a fun descent down Horse Ridge. There are opportunities for side-trips as well in this area, for example, one can check out the Lost Dutchman Mine Jr. which is located near intersection of Hoolie Bacon and JF Trail. However, we have never been overly impressed by this cave/maybe old mine so we just pushed on towards Indian Springs. There was no need to find an actual spring, however, we did find the old troughs and some piping. Indian Springs proved to be another really cold night, but lets be real we built a very large fire. We camped in a pretty well-established spot, in fact, someone's entire camp seemed to have been just abandoned in place there, but it was in a sad state.

Day three we continued down Peter's Trail, took a GPS reading at Kane Spring and made our way towards Peter's Mesa, which begins with a pretty good climb. We ran into the same group from day before near Peter's Mesa, chatted a little and continued mission. We went off-trail around Peter's Mesa and dropped down into one of our favorite canyons to take a short-cut to camp at one of our favorite spots. The third night must have literally been 15 degrees warmer and we woke up to very warm temps on day four. It was kind of weird, after spending the first two nights in rather unfamiliar areas we kind of felt like we were already home, even though we were still in the Supers. Our hike out was pretty uneventful, just taking your standard well-traveled western Supes trails to Peralta TH. In fact, I finished in short sleeves and shorts, which was a far cry from my opening morning picture.

Having hiked out to a point roughly in the center of Peter's Mesa from the First Water TH last month (a 21.5 mile trek) I figured I'd hike to the same point from the other end this time.

Unfortunately I don't yet have a true 4x4 to drive in to the Tortilla TH. While my CR-V has the tallest oversize off-road tires that can fit in the wheel well providing decent ground clearance (albeit with intermittent inner fender contact) and it has All-Wheel-Drive, in reality it's front-wheel drive until losing traction when the rears kick in, but only until the moment traction returns and it's back to fronts only. So in iffy situations it ends up with a bucking effect, tearing up the tread on the front tires along the way. Yes, I know, it's time to get serious and get a true 4x4.

Anyway, after a quick recon of the "road" I realized there was no way I was going to tear up my tires and likely the undercarriage to avoid an extra 6 miles of hiking, especially since I was solo and thus had no "spotter" to help. So I set off on foot for the trail head. What I thought was going to be a great day for photos turned out to be very hazy from lots of dust, likely coming from the Apache Trail road repair going on just a few miles up the way. But no matter, I didn't let that stop me from snapping some washed out shots. (No, I don't believe in using software to improve my shots, they are what they are.)

When I arrived at Tortilla TH all I found was an shot-up old water tower, old windmill shot up even worse (and thus destroyed), the expected empty case of Bud Light (I think Budweiser should kick in trail clean-up funds to offset the damage their customers do, but that's another subject) and all the brush around the trail head burned off. By the looks of it I believe the Forest Service did a small controlled burn.

Ok, time to really hit the trail. First it's into Tortilla Creek with all the expected rock hopping for more than I cared to deal with today, then up through dense brush with plenty of thorny growth to grab you every step of the way. But having read the previous triplogs I was prepared with my trimming shears, and proceeded to trim the worst of the growth to allow easy passage. As much as there was it did put a crimp on my normal hiking pace but it sure paid off dividends by cutting the return trip time in half.

On the way I welcomed the variety and amount of beautiful scenery, to the point I will be back more than a few times for off-trail exploring in a number of areas that caught my eye. Once to the pass I realized if I continued on to reach the farthest east point of last month's hike it would likely add another 2-3 hours and 700-1,000' more AEG so I decided I'd take a break and grab some sustenance, take a few off-trail excursions from the saddle and then begin the trek back out to the car. At the saddle next to a rudimentary rock wall I came across more trash from inconsiderate folks... seems nowadays there is more and more of this than every before. Sad!

Setting out on the trip out now that I had a relatively cat's-claw-free trail I kept a very brisk pace, catching views from a different standpoint along the way. I didn't mind hiking the road out other than it would have been nice to have the extra two hours for hiking on the trail itself.

I've been more curious than anything on my 4x4 hunting up 'til now so maybe it's time to get serious. But I'm particular... I'm not buying anything new or late model... too much weight with all the bells and whistles, power windows, sunroofs, etc. and I'm not a fan of the later Jeeps (reliability ain't like it used to be) so an old 4 cyl Toyota 4Runner or pickup has risen to the top of my list. I used to have 200,000+ mile, well-worn 2WD Tacoma pickup that held up like a tank that I only sold to get something that could hold more than two people but that's no longer a priority. But wanting to get into more of the less-accessible trails it's time to get the right equipment. Just like Teva Terra-Fi's for hiking, ya just gotta have the right stuff.

I have done the hike in from the Tortilla trailhead several times and it always seems so far. Much farther than the reported 2.5 or three miles. Today I drove my 4 x 4 in and each way it was 3.6 miles, so add that to my reported hiked miles if you hike in from the Tortilla trailhead. This probably accounts for why I have never seen anyone else back there. My brother and I cleared this trail of catclaw about a decade ago, and I decided to do a fresh cleanup myself today. It was badly overgrown in many spots but I can happily report my adopted section of trail is free and clear of vegetation and even has a passing lane in some sections. Tortilla Creek was flowing but the crossings were easy. The first mile and a half the trail passes several scenic rock outcroppings, many times accompanied with large shade trees. Finding shade was no problem on this section. Water was also flowing from Indian Spring and Kane Spring. The trail is in excellent condition.

Yep, that's some mean catclaw when you leave Hoolie to cut over the ridge to Peters...

Bob and I originally planned on showshoeing on Mount Graham but the plan fell through due to the weather. As an alternative we headed out to the superstitions. We wanted to do something in an area we hadn't been to much so we went down to the Tortilla Trailhead. We parked off the road and walked in along the dirt approach road on Friday night. We walked in about a 1/2 mile past the fence and the official start of Peters Trail. We set up camp in an alcove under a house size boulder. The next day we started down Peters Trail. We had originally inteded on going to Whiskey Spring and then circling back up around the Hoolie-Bacon trail unfortunatley we discovered that we had accidentally left the map in the truck. After missing the trail a couple times on the way to Charlebois we decided that proceding along an unknown trail in a seldom traveled area was a bad idea. We also didn't want to hike back out along Peters so we headed up to La Barge box. We camped on the sandy beach under Battleship just west of the "box" proper. It was perfect weather up to the second night. It started getting cloudy right after dark and it started raining sometime in the middle of the night. Bob set up a tarp and slept in his bivy under a tree. I slept out in the middle of the beach in just my bivy to test out how breathable it is. The bivy kept the rain out, but the condensation was still pretty bad. The shell of my sleeping bag was pretty wet by the morning. We hiked out in the rain to Canyon lake and started hiking up the highway. We got to Tortilla Flat about 12:30 and crossed the small wash across the road. We decided to try to flag down a ride rather than hike the next 8 miles along the Apache Trail. It took about a half an hour to get someone to stop who agreed to tote us up the road in the back of thier truck.

There was a group of people camped out at the bottom of the road at the trailhead, but other than them we didn't see anyone else the whole time we were out.

Took Peters Trail to Charlebois. Deer were everywhere. The recent rains have made the creeks really spectacular and they are still flowing three weeks later.

Took a side trip, apparently following Vaporman for awhile, except we were doing it on purpose (see forthcoming new hike description). Back up Peters Mesa we began the descent to the south and finished the last mile to Charlebois in the moonlight.

Overnight at Charlebois was cold, temps were below freezing by 10PM and I was covered in frost and ice in the morning. It was probably about 10 degrees colder than I was properly equipped for. Thanks weathermen!

The next day we headed out Dutchman taking the Red Tanks through Upper LaBarge Box and back north on Hoolie Bacon. Spotted tracks of a cougar stalking a deer on Hoolie, very cool! More deer tracks were spotted later on as well, but no deer and no cougars were seen the second day...too bad.

Briefly lost the trail at the Tortilla Creek Confluence, same place I lost it last time, guess I didn't learn. The Hoolie and JF are in better shape for the most part. There is some catclaw between Horse Ridge and Trap Canyon, but it seemed better than last time I took it.

Finished 5.5 hours later before it got too cold or dark. Great loop!
