I made another plan to get to the summit of Top Hat. I saw from uploaded routes that I went up the wrong side before and I also spotted some trails on aerials that made routes of on the Route Editor. I got the SE corner of the mountain and took the wrong track in because I wasn't paying enough attention. so when the trail got to its high point, I was close enough that I just bushwhacked the rest of the way up and then took the main routes down on the north side.

At the top I saw 2 dirt bikers having trouble getting up a road that seemed to turn into a trail as it got to a saddle. I was contemplating which way to take down from the top. One way was down a steep drop with loose rock and no visible trail, despite what the aerials seemed to show. the other way was along a ridgelilne, which I took. At the end of that route, it ended at the saddle, where the bikers still were, and there was also an arch I've never seen before.

From the saddle I took the main visible trail the continued north past where I made my track. It ended at the Hope is Lost trail/wash, so I took that back to 1356 and back to the trailhead. on the way back I tried to explore the Tomahawk Mine, which doesn't seem like much and is also hiding in plain sight.

Sunny to start, then cloudy and a little windy with some very light rain towards the end. the humidity was a reminder that the monsoon is coming.

Started at Bulldog Canyon and hiked FR10 and 1356 (Rock House) to the Hope is Lost trail and hiked that out and back. Saw one 4WD driver on the way out and 2 dirt bikers on the way back. Hazy skies and not too hot. Got windy at times. No wildlife seen.

Hope is Lost is a nice wash to hike, more interesting than the road in. Wanted to hike further but didn't want to spend the time on a Sunday.

Wally and I dropped a car off at Meridian trail head and drove over to Willow to start our hike. Wally was nice enough to draw us up a route and some options. Hit the trail about 7:30. 1 shirt and shorts would have been good but I wore pants for some exploring. 🥴 Lots of cool rock formations and stuff to see. Only saw a hand full of people all day!
Weather and route were great and most trails were in good shape. Thanks for making it go so smoothly Wally. Like HAZ, you rock!!

Denny and I had talked about a shuttle hike in the Goldfields from the Willow Spring trailhead to the Meridian trailhead years ago. I thought we could break it up into two or three hikes but Denny went all in like he was holding a pair of aces. I had a route with an option to hike over a ridge but the passes were about a mile farther north because of a second ridge we'd need to hike around so we opted for the southern route which was all on trail. We connection parts of 11 trails in 14 miles to make the trek. Part of the trails were roads and part were washes and sometimes the track we had used a wash but a trail was there. In the Goldfields most of the trails are not marked and some are marked occasionally so a having a track is very helpful. The weather cooperated and Denny keep going so we finished the entire route (included an extra mile looking for a pass) in good time. There is some interesting geology in the Goldfields so I guess they're okay. Thanks for the hike Denny.

Met Chris at the Wolverine gate, then drove in and parked near the tank on the sw side of Top Hat. Headed north on Hope is Lost Trail, making a side trip to Palo Verde Arch. Continued north in the wash, staying in the wash all the way to the northern turn to Triple Arch, I guess that’s Black Glass Canyon? The wash walk itself was impressive—excellent scenery, plenty of water, a cave to walk through. Largely free of vegetation. Waterproof socks were helpful.

Heading to Triple Arch was really the only difficult part of the entire day. That canyon was a little more involved, especially with the water and vegetation. Found some bypasses on the left side. Once below the arch, we took the use trail up to it, and had a snack while sitting on the west side of the arch.

Continuing south past the arch was much easier. No use of hands was needed, and no vegetation. Doing the south side of Triple Arch as an out and back is probably what most people opt for? I liked the route we took, but the southern half went by a lot faster.

Headed back south, then south on Rough N Ready Canyon. Scenic, easy. Turned up towards Anniversary Arch. Kind of a meh arch, but great scenery and fairly easy hiking. Took a connector over to Cottonwood Wash, great flowers along that connector. Once in Cottonwood Wash, headed south, then west on Horse With No Name, then south on Hope is Lost to get back to the Jeep.

Great day, certainly an excellent hike. Nice weather with high clouds and a cool breeze. All the water was a bonus. Good to see Chris again.

Jill was interested in some of the trails I had hiked last weekend, so she and I, plus our friend Janelle headed out for a short loop. We drove in and parked on the southwest side of Top Hat, starting our hike around 0700. Headed north, then east up to Palo Verde Arch, then up to the summit of Top Hat. Distinct trail to the arch, then essentially off trail to the summit. Found a good ramp to head up, then picked our way around vegetation the rest of the way. Nice views with the clouds.

Headed down after a short break, then continued north in the wash. East on Horse With No Name, which was Jill’s favorite section. Once over the ridge, north in Cottonwood Wash on Packsaddle. Quick stop to look at some feature marked on a map as Hole in the Rock or Hole in the Wall or something like that. Then headed west in the intersecting wash. Then headed back south in our original wash to finish out the loop. Great geology and scenery the entire morning.

I had promised Jill we’d be done by 1100, and that is exactly when we finished. Didn’t see anyone while we hiked, and only a few vehicles on our drive out.

The Three Lesser Peaks Trail looked like a nice, moderate route for a warm Sunday afternoon. We borrowed the route from @dixieflyer from 1/15/2020 to include a few arches.

We drove as far as my low-clearance vehicle could make it on FR 1356 before parking. The first couple miles were along the forest road. The turnoff onto the well-defined trail is marked by 2 large cairns but is still easy to miss if you're immersed in conversation and/or looking at the views. We looked for Elliptical Arch but didn't see it, so we headed for the peaks. There was a desert tortoise [ photo ] ambling across the trail as we ascended to the first peak. All 3 peaks were easy and quick to ascend but very very slow to descend due to all the loose rocks and bushwacking (and constant monitoring for snakes). There were more dense wildflowers and many hummingbirds as we reached the first peak. All 3 peaks had great views but the fencing on the 3rd peak diminished the views a bit.

We descended to the Horse With No Name Trail, which was very well-defined and easy, with excellent views. We encountered 2 separate Gila Monsters [ photo ] , about 1 mile apart, each one blocking the trail. The first hissed loudly and started running toward us, which was exciting. We went around each monster so they could continue getting their sun. We searched for the Overlook Arch but couldn't find it. We found the Kissing Turtles Arch after a little searching. It was smaller than expected but still very interesting. We then turned and looped back to the car.

Overall a beautiful day, temps in the 80s, a few clouds. Views were outstanding the entire way. Half of the wildflowers were past their peak but there were still many in full bloom. The music of the birds accompanied us the entire way. We saw 2 RAZRs early on but no other humans the rest of the day. It was cool to see some Gila monsters.

Jim is town for the holidays and wanted to do a hike. The Steeler game started later, so the Goldfields looked like the best option to do a shorter hike close to home. We started from the Tomahawk Mine TH and headed out on that trail to the Horse with No Name Trail. Horse with No Name is one of the best trails in this area. The high point has some amazing scenery and interesting rock formations. The clouds started to clear at this point, allowing the sunlight to accent the color in this area. Once we got back down to the washes, we decided to head back on the Hope is Lost Trail and head back on FR1356. Didn't see any other hikers at all and not even any 4 wheelers, which was a bit of a surprise. Finished up just before 11am and stopped at Senor Taco for lunch. Nice to get out in cooler weather with some water still in the washes after the big Christmas rain.

My daughter was taking the SATs today and I had to pick her up at noon. The only good option was to hit the Goldfields since I drive right by the high school on the way there and back.

the weather was very cool for most of this hike. It got a little warm at the end, but not really hot. didn't even finish my bladder in the Camelbak. Saw no other hikers, bikers, or horse riders. There were a few dirt bikers who were buzzing the circuit of roads and that was about it.

I headed up FR1356 and took the Rock House Trail to the Hope is Lost Trail, then Horse With No Name to Cottonwood Wash. From there I hiked some of the single track unnamed biker/horse trails and then headed back to the Bulldog Canyon TH west of Blue Ridge, from where I started. didn't see any wildlife or anything else crazy. The scenery out in this area is really amazing, I never get tired of it. The Horse with No Name Trail probably has some of the best views this area has to offer. The hard tuft rock is easy to walk on and looks cool.

finished up in time to pick up my daughter after her SATs and headed back home for an afternoon of continue errands to run.

I decided to head to the beautiful, rugged, and seductive Goldfield Mountains to do two hikes today: 1)Top Hat and the Arches, and 2)Dome Mountain.

For hike #1, we drove in from the Wolverine Gate into the Bulldog Canyon OHV area and took FR1356 to just below Top Hat Hill and parked. From there we made our way to Kissing Turtles Arch and Overlook Arch. To get there we first took a couple of trails -- the Hope is Lost Trail and the Horse With No Name Trail -- and then did some off-trail hiking to get to the arches. Then we went almost all the way back to where we parked, and took a social trail that led up to Palo Verde Arch. Instead of taking the trail all the way to the arch, we took the trail a portion of the way to the arch, and then went off-trail up to Top Hat Hill. After enjoying the summit views, we followed a ridgeline over to Palo Verde Arch. We hung out there a bit, and then descended on the social trail back down to Orohai Wash/Hope is Lost Trail, and then back to my truck.

For hike #2, we drove back to the Dome Mountain TH and parked. Then we did an out-and-back hike up to Dome Mountain. The trail up to the summit is easy to follow, but for some reason fools have painted lines and arrows along the way. The Goldfields are too close to Phoenix I guess.

It was a great day to be in the Goldfields. The 360 degree views at both summits were awesome, and we saw no other hikers all day. While on top of Top Hat Hill, we saw some horseback riders make their way to Palo Verde Arch, but they had left by the time we made our way to the arch.

Mileage/Elevation gain for the 2 hikes are:
1) Top Hat and the Arches: 7.1 miles with 1,451' of elevation gain
2) Dome Mountain: 4.0 miles with 1,343' of elevation gain

The stats above are the sum of these 2

I decided to go out and do another iteration of this hike. This time I did Top Hat Hill(of course) and went to Kissing Turtles Arch, Overlook Arch, and Palo Verde Arch. In order to eliminate walking on forest roads, I used my Bulldog Canyon OHV permit and drove in on FR1356 and parked near Top Hat Hill.

I decided to drive in on FR1356 from the east, and went in the gate that is off of Apache Trail near mm 202. The road is really rough in places, and you'll definitely need a high clearance 4WD vehicle. After the hike, I decided to drive south on FR1356 to the Wolverine Gate -- the road was a bit rocky, but it was a much easier drive than coming in from the east side of FR1356.

I started the hike by going through Orohai Wash, and then took the so called Horse with No Name Trail for a ways, and then went off-trail to Kissing Turtles Arch and Overlook Arch. Orohai Wash was a bit too sandy for my liking, but the Horse with No Name Trail was actually good to hike on -- it was much better than some of the named trails in the Supes. After checking out the arches, I reversed course and headed back to where I started. On the way back I went up to Top Hat Hill, and then to Palo Verde Arch. There is a good use trail nowadays from Palo Verde Arch back to Orohai Wash.

Based on the summit log book, there is about one person a month going up to Top Hat Hill. Interestingly, most log book entries had commentary on COVID-19.

While on the hike I perused out some possible routes up to Golden Dome and Tuff Dome. This seems to be about the shortest way to get to these 2 domes. I am not sure if Tuff Dome is climbable, but I have been to Golden Dome before. I imagine that I will attempt to go up to these 2 domes sometime this winter.

I somehow managed to convince Tracie the Intrepid to join me on a hike in the Goldfields where we bagged 3 peaks and went to 3 arches -- the dual trifecta! We went to the summit of 3 of the "lesser" peaks in the Goldfields -- Peak 3134, Peak 3089, and Peak 3047; and we also went to 3 arches -- Elliptical Arch, Overlook Arch, and Kissing Turtles Arch. Credit goes to @hikerdw for coming up for the name for Kissing Turtles Arch, and for providing a GPS track that leads to Overlook Arch and Kissing Turtles Arch.

I have counted 22 peaks in the Goldfields that are 3,000' or more in elevation, and with today's hike I have now been on top of 19 of the 22. Still remaining are Tuff Dome(3,145'), North Peak 3195, and Peak 3076.

We drove in through the North Bulldog Canyon Wolverine Pass Gate (I have a pass) to the Dome Mountain TH and parked. This saved about 4 miles RT of walking on FR 1356. The hike was an inverted lollipop loop hike. We first went to Elliptical Arch. Actually we went past it as I was wanting to get to a waypoint that I had saved on my GPS, but the waypoint was bogus. So we backtracked a bit and found the arch -- actually Tracie and her sharp eyes found it, as I am not sure that I would have seen it. We did not get up in the arch -- to do so I think that we would have had to go down a couple of hundred feet and come up through a slick rock drainage to get into the arch -- we'll save that for next time.

Then we went off-trail up to Peak 3134, then Peak 3089, then Peak 3047. We saw 4 javelina at the summit of Peak 3047, but that was all of the wildlike that we saw on the hike.

We continued the off-trail by descending NE from Peak 3047 to a nice use trail; from there we made our way over to Overlook Arch and Kissing Turtles Arch. We then reversed course and took the use trail back to Orohai Wash. From there we took the wash back toward Top Hat Hill until we hit FR 1356, and then took the forest road back to where we parked.

It was a great day to be out in the beautiful, rugged, seductive, and underrated Goldfields, and it was nice to bag 3 peaks that I had not been to before. Plus it is always nice to see some arches, and there are several of them in the Goldfields!

I saw a few wildflowers that were in the early stages of blooming -- I have a feeling that this year will be a good wildflower season, and I would think that the wildflowers will be blooming in late February to early January in the low desert.
